The roar of the Convergence airship filled the plateau, its shadow stretching over Elaine and her team. Spotlights blazed down from its underbelly, illuminating the jagged terrain and casting the group in stark relief.
Kael's knuckles whitened on his bowstring as he took aim. "They're not giving us a way out this time."
Ferran growled, his sword already raised. "Good. I'm tired of running."
Ardyn surveyed the descending airship, her expression grim. "If they've brought that much firepower, it's because they know what we're carrying. They won't stop until they've torn it out of your hands, Elaine."
Elaine clutched the fused crystal tighter, its pulsing light vibrating through her arm. "Then we make our stand here."
The Convergence Strikes
The airship unleashed a hail of fire as Convergence operatives rappelled down from its sides, their masked forms moving with military precision. Constructs leaped from hidden deployment pods, their crystalline limbs crackling with raw energy.
"Kael, Ferran, hold the left flank!" Elaine shouted, her voice cutting through the chaos. "Ardyn, with me! Lira, stay back and keep that field generator ready!"
Kael loosed an arrow, the shaft piercing the chest of an operative before ricocheting into the leg of another. "We're pinned! There's too many of them!"
Ferran charged headlong into the fray, his sword cleaving through a construct's core with a roar of defiance. "Then we thin them out!"
Ardyn moved like a shadow beside Elaine, her blade a blur as she intercepted attacks meant for the others. "The airship's going to bring more. We can't hold this position."
Elaine's gaze darted to the glowing undercarriage of the airship, where its power core hummed faintly. "We won't have to. Lira, can you overload their systems?"
Lira crouched behind a rock, her tools sparking as she worked frantically. "I can try, but it'll take time—and I'm going to need cover!"
A Surging Power
The fused crystal grew hotter in Elaine's hands, its light flaring as it reacted to the proximity of the constructs. Whispers filled her mind, louder and more insistent than ever.
"Use it," the Nexus's voice urged. "You carry the power to end this. Let it flow through you."
Elaine's knees buckled under the weight of the voice, her vision blurring as the energy of the crystal surged. She could feel it coursing through her veins, an intoxicating mix of strength and control.
"Elaine!" Ardyn grabbed her arm, pulling her back to her feet. "Whatever it's saying to you, don't listen. Stay in control."
Elaine shook her head, her breathing ragged. "I can't keep holding it back. If I don't use it, we're all dead."
Kael's voice rang out across the battlefield. "Whatever you're doing, do it fast! We're getting overrun!"
A Devastating Choice
As the Convergence forces closed in, Elaine raised the fused crystal, its light blazing with raw, uncontained power. The energy erupted in a shockwave, throwing constructs and operatives alike to the ground.
The airship faltered, its engines sputtering as the energy wave disrupted its systems.
"It's working!" Lira shouted, her hands flying over her tools as she redirected the energy into the field generator.
But the surge didn't stop. The crystal's power continued to expand, its light growing brighter and more unstable with each passing second. Elaine felt it pulling at her mind, threatening to consume her entirely.
"Elaine, stop!" Kael shouted, his voice tinged with fear. "You're going to kill yourself!"
Elaine's vision blurred as the energy spiraled out of control. She could see the Nexus's threads weaving around her, binding her to the shards and to the world itself.
"Sacrifice is inevitable," the Nexus whispered. "Choose wisely."
A Terrible Loss
A sudden explosion rocked the plateau as the airship's core destabilized, sending flames and debris raining down. In the chaos, a Convergence operative broke through the line and lunged at Lira, their blade raised.
"No!" Ferran roared, throwing himself in front of her. The blade struck him instead, piercing his side. He collapsed to the ground, blood pooling beneath him.
Lira screamed, her hands trembling as she tried to stem the bleeding. "Ferran! No, stay with me!"
Elaine's heart clenched as she saw him fall. The crystal's light flared violently, matching her fury. With a guttural cry, she unleashed a second shockwave, obliterating the remaining constructs and forcing the Convergence forces to retreat.
Aftermath
The battlefield grew silent as the last of the Convergence operatives fled. Smoke and ash filled the air, mingling with the acrid scent of burnt machinery.
Elaine dropped to her knees beside Ferran, her hands shaking as she pressed them against his wound. "Stay with us, Ferran. You're not done yet."
He coughed weakly, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "Guess… I finally got to be the hero, huh?"
Lira sobbed, her voice breaking. "You're not dying, you idiot. Don't you dare."
Kael knelt beside them, his face grim. "We need to move. If they regroup, we won't survive another attack."
Elaine clenched her fists, the fused crystal pulsing faintly in her hand. "We're not leaving him."
Ardyn stood nearby, her expression unreadable. "You need to make a choice, Elaine. Him or the mission."
The Path Ahead
As night fell over the plateau, the group prepared to move. Ferran's condition was worsening, his breathing shallow as Lira worked tirelessly to stabilize him.
Elaine stood apart from the others, the crystal glowing softly in her hands. The Nexus's voice returned, quiet but insistent.
"Unity requires sacrifice, Custodian. Will you carry the weight, or let it crush you?"
Elaine stared at the horizon, her resolve hardening. "We carry on. Together."
