Chapter 65 - Chapter 10: The Key to Oblivion (III)

The glow of the fused crystal filled the chamber, its light sharp and blinding. Elaine's grip tightened as the pulsing energy surged through her body, synchronizing with the runes etched into the vault's walls.

The ground beneath them trembled violently. Cracks raced through the ancient stone, and the hum of dormant machinery roared to life.

"We need to move!" Ferran shouted, his voice barely audible over the rising cacophony.

Elaine turned to the others, her vision swimming with afterimages of the crystal's light. "This place is coming down! Head for the exit!"

Ardyn and Kael led the charge, their weapons drawn as they cleared a path through the crumbling ruins. Lira stumbled, her tools clattering to the ground as she struggled to keep up.

"I've got you!" Ferran said, grabbing her arm and pulling her forward.

Elaine lingered at the rear, her gaze drawn to the pedestal as the fused crystal pulsed brighter. Whispers echoed in her mind, fragments of the Nexus's voice blending with the hum of the collapsing vault.

"You are the anchor. The Nexus rises… through you."

The Vault's Collapse

The team sprinted through the narrow corridor, the walls crumbling around them as the vault's defenses failed. Sparks flew from exposed conduits, and the air grew thick with dust and the acrid tang of burning energy.

Kael fired an arrow over his shoulder, striking a Convergence operative who had managed to slip inside during the chaos. "They're not giving up!" he shouted.

"They'll regret it!" Ferran bellowed, swinging his sword to block another attacker.

Elaine pushed forward, the fused crystal in her hand glowing so brightly it cast shadows that danced wildly against the walls. "Keep going! Don't stop!"

As they reached the final chamber before the exit, a towering figure stepped into their path. The Voice of the Convergence loomed before them, their dark armor radiating power drawn from the surrounding chaos.

"You think you've won," the Voice said, their tone calm but seething with malice. "But the Nexus cannot be denied."

Elaine raised her blade, the crystal's light spilling across her face. "The Nexus doesn't control me. And neither will you."

Confrontation with the Voice

The room exploded into motion as Elaine charged the Voice, her blade clashing against their glowing weapon. Sparks flew as their strikes met, the impact sending shockwaves through the chamber.

Ferran and Kael moved to flank the Voice, their combined attacks forcing them onto the defensive.

"Lira, get the exit open!" Elaine shouted, her voice sharp.

Lira scrambled to the vault's final mechanism, her tools sparking as she worked frantically to override the controls.

The Voice deflected a strike from Ferran, their laughter echoing in the crumbling chamber. "You think you can stop what has already begun? The Nexus is eternal."

Elaine gritted her teeth, driving them back with a flurry of strikes. "Eternity means nothing if it costs everyone's freedom."

The fused crystal in her hand flared violently, its energy surging through her blade and forcing the Voice to retreat.

Escape to the Surface

With a deafening groan, the final mechanism released, and the vault's main doors began to grind open. Lira stumbled back, her face pale but triumphant. "It's open! Let's go!"

Elaine turned to the others, her blade still raised. "Go! I'll hold them off!"

Ferran hesitated, his expression conflicted. "You're not doing this alone!"

"That's an order!" Elaine shouted.

Kael grabbed Ferran's arm, pulling him toward the exit. "She knows what she's doing. We'll cover her from the outside."

The group sprinted through the open doors, leaving Elaine alone with the Voice as the vault continued to collapse.

The Crystal's Choice

The Voice raised their weapon, their movements precise and deliberate. "You cannot delay the inevitable. The Nexus will rise, and you will serve its will."

Elaine raised the crystal, its light blazing with intensity. "I don't serve anyone. Not the Convergence, and not the Nexus."

The fused crystal pulsed violently, and a wave of energy erupted from it, engulfing the room in blinding light.

For a moment, everything was silent.

Elaine stood in a vast, empty expanse of white light. The Nexus's voice surrounded her, calm but insistent.

"You carry the Nexus within you, Custodian. You are its heart, its mind, its will. The choice is yours to make."

Elaine's voice trembled with anger. "You say I have a choice, but you've been guiding me—manipulating me—this entire time."

The voice softened. "Guidance is not control. You have always been free to choose."

The light shifted, showing two paths. One led to the Nexus core, whole and glowing with unity. The other led to the shards scattered once more, their light dim but free.

"Rebuild the Nexus, and bring order to chaos. Or shatter it forever, and let the world find its own way. Both paths carry risk. Both paths require sacrifice."

Elaine closed her eyes, the weight of the choice pressing heavily on her.

A New Beginning

The light faded, and Elaine opened her eyes to find herself back in the collapsing vault. The fused crystal had dimmed, its energy subdued but steady in her hands.

The Voice of the Convergence lay crumpled against a wall, their form flickering as the Nexus's energy abandoned them.

"This… isn't… over," they rasped, their mask cracking to reveal hollow, empty eyes.

Elaine turned and sprinted toward the exit, the ground shaking beneath her feet. She emerged into the wasteland just as the vault collapsed entirely, sending a plume of dust and debris into the sky.

The others were waiting for her, their faces etched with relief as she approached.

"You made it," Kael said, his voice filled with quiet admiration.

Elaine nodded, holding up the crystal. "But the fight isn't over. The Nexus gave me a choice—and we're going to make sure it's the right one."

The group turned southward, their path uncertain but their resolve stronger than ever. The fused crystal pulsed faintly in Elaine's hands, its light a reminder of the weight they carried—and the power to shape the future.
