Chereads / Reincarnated as a Carp: The Evolution System / Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Abyss

Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Abyss

The encounter with the predatory monster had left Daniel on edge. As he swam through the murky depths of the lake, his mind raced. The system's cryptic suggestion that the creature could become an ally echoed incessantly. An ally? It seemed absurd. Yet, in this strange new world, where he was a mere carpa, nothing seemed impossible anymore.

The water around him grew colder as he descended into deeper regions of the lake, seeking safety from potential threats. The vegetation thinned, replaced by jagged rocks and peculiar formations. These depths felt eerily quiet, a stark contrast to the more populated upper layers. It was as though this part of the lake was deliberately avoided by others.

Daniel sighed internally. "At this rate, I'll be an old fish before I've explored even a quarter of this place," he thought.

The vastness of the lake overwhelmed him. Its boundaries seemed endless, and with each new area he discovered, more questions arose. What kind of ecosystem supported creatures like that monstrous predator? And why had the system chosen this particular place for his rebirth?

Shaking off his spiraling thoughts, Daniel focused on the task at hand: survival. He darted between crevices in the rocks, his camouflaged body blending seamlessly with the surroundings. Along the way, he continued to nibble on small organisms, steadily accumulating energy and experience.

[Experience: 7/20 for Level 3.]

As he foraged, a faint glow in the distance caught his attention. It was soft, pulsing rhythmically, almost like a heartbeat. Curiosity tugged at him, but caution held him back. "What now?" he muttered internally.

Against his better judgment, Daniel swam closer to the source of the light. The glow emanated from a small cluster of bioluminescent plants nestled between two boulders. They swayed gently, their ethereal light casting strange shadows.

[Discovered: Luminous Kelp]

[A rare aquatic plant known for its restorative properties. Caution: Attracts nearby predators.]

"Of course," Daniel muttered. "Why can't anything here just be helpful without trying to kill me?"

Still, the kelp was tempting. If it had restorative properties, it might prove invaluable. He approached cautiously, plucking a small piece with his mouth. As he chewed, a warm sensation spread through his body.

[Consumed Luminous Kelp: Energy +10, Temporary Stamina Boost +5%]

The system's notification was welcome, but it was immediately followed by another.

[Warning: Predators detected nearby.]

A chill ran through Daniel. He turned just in time to see a pair of glowing eyes emerge from the shadows. The creature was smaller than the monstrous predator he had encountered earlier, but it was no less menacing. Its sleek, eel-like body coiled as it prepared to strike, sharp teeth glinting in the faint light.

"Great. Just what I needed," Daniel thought, activating his camouflage.

The eel paused, its head tilting as if sensing something amiss. Daniel remained perfectly still, his body blending with the surrounding rocks. The creature circled the area, its movements slow and deliberate.

Daniel's mind raced. He couldn't outrun it, and he definitely couldn't fight it head-on. But maybe, just maybe, he could outsmart it.

[New Mission: Evade the Stalker Eel.]

Objective: Survive for 2 minutes without being detected.]

Reward: +10 Experience, Unlock: Basic Strategy Guide.]

The timer appeared in his vision, and Daniel felt his heart—if he even had one in this form—pound against his ribcage.

The eel moved closer, its sinuous body weaving between the rocks. Daniel suppressed the urge to swim away. He knew any sudden movement would give him away. Instead, he focused on controlling his breathing—or whatever the aquatic equivalent was.

The eel hovered near the kelp, its glowing eyes scanning the area. Time seemed to slow as Daniel waited, the timer ticking down in agonizing increments.

"Fifteen seconds," he thought, his body rigid with tension.

Suddenly, the eel snapped its jaws at a nearby fish that had wandered too close. The unfortunate creature flailed for a moment before going limp in the eel's grasp. With its prey secured, the eel retreated into the darkness, leaving Daniel alone once more.

[Mission Complete! Reward Claimed.]

[+10 Experience, Basic Strategy Guide Unlocked.]

"Basic Strategy Guide?" Daniel thought. "What is this, a tutorial for surviving as a fish?"

A new panel appeared, displaying a series of tips and tactics for navigating the lake. Most of it was common sense—avoid open spaces, utilize camouflage effectively—but there were a few nuggets of information that caught his attention.

[Tip: Certain predators are drawn to specific prey. Using bait can distract them, allowing for safer passage.]

[Tip: Environmental features, such as currents and vegetation, can be used to your advantage in combat and evasion.]

"Bait, huh?" Daniel mused. "I'll have to keep that in mind."

Hours passed as Daniel continued his exploration. He avoided further confrontations, relying on his newfound knowledge to navigate the lake's dangers. Eventually, he reached a peculiar area where the water grew warm, and the faint sound of bubbling reached his ears.

Curious, he ventured closer, discovering a series of geothermal vents spewing streams of hot water. The area was teeming with life, from small crustaceans to vibrant schools of fish.

[Discovered: Thermal Grotto.]

[A hotspot of biodiversity, but beware—territorial predators often claim this area as their hunting ground.]

As Daniel surveyed the grotto, the system chimed once more.

[New Mission: Claim the Thermal Grotto as a Safe Zone.]

Objective: Eliminate or evade local threats and establish dominance.]

Reward: Permanent access to Thermal Grotto resources, +20 Evolution Points.]

Daniel groaned. "Establish dominance? I'm barely surviving, and now I'm supposed to play king of the hill?"

Before he could decide on a course of action, a sudden movement caught his eye. A massive crustacean emerged from one of the vents, its claws snapping menacingly. The creature was unlike anything Daniel had seen before—armored, fast, and clearly ready to defend its territory.

"Of course," Daniel muttered. "Why did I expect this to be easy?"

As the crustacean advanced, Daniel felt a strange sense of determination. If he was going to survive in this world, he needed to grow stronger. This was just another obstacle in his path—and he was ready to face it.
