"Phew! Phew!"
At that moment, Ivysaur's second Razor Leaf attack flew towards and struck Mismagius.
Mismagius winced in pain, its once cute and mischievous face twisting into something more sinister.
Agatha shouted, "Mismagius, use Perish Song!"
'Perish Song!?' Hearing this, Kai immediately tensed up.
Although Perish Song is a Normal-type move, its effects are devastating. Once used, it places a countdown mark on both Pokémon in the battle.
When the countdown ends, the marked Pokémon faint, losing their ability to fight!
It's like having a ticking time bomb attached to the Pokémon it's only a matter of time before it explodes.
Moves like Perish Song or Destiny Bond are often last-ditch strategies for turning the tide when the odds are against you!
"Ivysaur, stop it quickly!" Kai called out urgently.
Ivysaur lashed out repeatedly with its Vine Whip, trying to disrupt Mismagius, but it was too late. Mismagius opened its mouth, and haunting black musical notes began to emanate, swirling with ominous energy as the melody of doom echoed across the battlefield.
In the next instant, glowing marks appeared on both Pokémon, signalling the countdown.
Even from outside the battle, Kai could feel the heavy weight of the move. Standing far from the arena, he couldn't help but feel his heartbeat quicken, as though an unseen force was gripping his chest.
"Don't be so nervous," Agatha said with a sly smile. "This move only affects Pokémon, not humans."
"I know!" Kai replied, though his voice betrayed his concern. He wasn't worried for himself but rather breaking out in a cold sweat for Ivysaur.
Kai was aware of how Perish Song worked. It could be nullified by withdrawing the affected Pokémon into its Poké Ball, severing the connection to the song.
But in a one-on-one battle, recalling your Pokémon meant forfeiting the match.
The only option now was to defeat Mismagius before Perish Song triggered!
"Ivysaur, give it everything you've got! Use Seed Bomb!"
Ivysaur's bud glowed as it launched a barrage of hard seeds in an arc toward Mismagius.
Mismagius floated upward, trying to evade, but two Vine Whips shot out suddenly, snaring it in mid-air and yanking it down.
The Seed Bomb struck, and a series of explosions erupted, scattering green sparks. Mismagius was visibly weakened, but it still managed to stay in the fight.
"Not good!" Kai frowned, noticing the countdown nearing its end. "Quick, Ivysaur! Finish it!"
Perhaps it was the urgency in Kai's voice, or perhaps it was the bond between trainer and Pokémon, but at that moment, Ivysaur's body began to glow white.
"Is it... evolving!?" Kai exclaimed in amazement.
In a flash of brilliant light, Ivysaur transformed. Its body grew larger, its bud bloomed into a magnificent flower, and its presence on the battlefield became even more imposing.
"Venusaur!" it roared, announcing its newfound power.
Wasting no time, Venusaur unleashed a Razor Leaf attack. The enhanced power of its new form proved overwhelming, and the sharp leaves struck Mismagius with precision, finally knocking it out.
Thud!
As Mismagius fell to the ground and fainted, Kai acted quickly. He returned Venusaur to its Poké Ball just before the Perish Song countdown reached zero, severing the connection.
The referee glanced at Agatha, who gave a slight nod of approval. He then raised his arm and announced, "Mismagius is unable to battle! The challenger wins!"
Kai let out a sigh of relief before releasing Venusaur from its Poké Ball again.
As expected, the countdown had been nullified, and the effects of Perish Song were gone.
Looking at his newly evolved Venusaur, Kai couldn't help but smile. Its strength had increased tremendously, but its appearance was no longer the small, cute form it once had.
It had become much more imposing some might even call it less attractive.
But to Kai, Venusaur was still his Pokémon, and he was proud of it. He patted its massive flowered back and said warmly, "Venusaur, you were amazing! Evolving at such a crucial moment... you've exceeded all my expectations."
Venusaur leaned in, nuzzling Kai's hand with its enormous head, letting out a happy roar.
"Saurrrrr!"
However, its increased size caught Kai off guard, and with a playful nudge, it accidentally knocked him to the ground.
Agatha approached with a small smile, holding out a badge shaped like an asparagus sprout. "Congratulations on earning the Ghost Badge," she said. "But I must say, even though I lost, it wasn't easy for you to win."
Kai accepted the badge, a wry smile on his face. "What choice did I have? I couldn't have won if you used your ace Pokemons"
Agatha chuckled. "Life is full of unexpected challenges, young man. You did well. If you participate in the Pokémon League, I think you might have a real shot at becoming the champion. And if you ever want a fair rematch, feel free to challenge me again."
"Taking on the Elite Four, huh?" Kai mused. "That does sound tempting. But first, I need to focus on making my Pokemon stronger"
Agatha nodded approvingly. "A sensible approach. I admire your level-headedness. It's rare to see someone so young with such maturity."

After leaving Viridian City, Kai planned to return to Vermilion City to rest before continuing his journey to the Pokémon League.
However, on his way through Cerulean City, he unexpectedly ran into Ash, Misty, and Brock.
The group was just entering Cerulean City and was surprised to see Kai.
After exchanging greetings, Kai turned to Ash. "Why are you back here? Did you get the Volcano Badge from Blaine?"
"Of course!" Ash grinned, proudly pulling back his jacket to show his seventh badge. "Charizard was incredible! After a tough fight, we finally defeated Blaine's Magmar."
Misty rolled her eyes. "You've only got seven badges what's there to brag about?" She then turned to Kai, her tone immediately softening. "I'm guessing you've already earned your eighth badge, right, Kai?"
Kai opened his badge case, showing the gleaming Ghost Badge alongside his others. "That's right. I just finished my battle at the Viridian Gym. Now, I'm preparing for the Pokémon League. But what about you? Aren't you supposed to be challenging a gym? Why are you back in Cerulean City?"
