Chapter 1 - Thick And White

Thick fog covers Gusty. A very small town where everybody know everyone. A fog so thick that you can't see the sun, just a dull white that covers the area. Usually, its all sunshine or nothing but today... Today is unlike any other day. This small town should smell like grass and earthy shit no one could locate, but the air holds a cold bland and neutral taste that drives me crazy.

Despite the cool air, it still feels so humid and uncomfortably warm in the morning. I can't feel anything blow through the air and this whole town was named after the fact that you'll only hear wind. Yesterday held the most beautiful sunset a man could dream of, so where did this fog come from? I even slept outside!

I step in the nearby convenience store to look for anything breakfast related. The inside of this store is even more humid and uncomfortably warmer than outside. I should probably take off my sweater.

"Oh... wassup' Mikey," Someone catches me off guard.

I look up and its an old friend of mine, Kitty! The dude is built like a brick shithouse, but he's scared of cats so we've been calling him that since elementary school. So much in fact, I forgot his name.

"You work here now?" I ask.

"Yup~... wachu' need?"

I look at the chicken in the display case next to Kitty. Tenders, wings, thighs... I can't choose. Hmmmmmmmmmm... I just stand there for a while as another person walks in. A rugged middle-aged man that I've never seen.

"Damn, urry' up!" Kitty shouts at me.

"I'll take a 2-piece!"

Kitty slumps over to the chicken and back holding a small paper bag, rings it in for five dollars. I can't stop myself from smiling as I whip my wallet out. I just love chicken. CHICKEN~ CHICKEN~ CHICK-

I hold my wallet open for the world to see. Kitty and the other guy can see clearly that I got nothing but crickets. Never had my smile wiped from my face so badly. I close it and put it back where I can't see it as I stand defeated by capitalism.

"U-uhh... Don't worry, on the house," Kitty stumbles.

I look up to meet his eyes to only be met with pity. I can't handle it. I look around to see that the man that walked in saw, heard, and probably tasted my defeat as he points his eyes everywhere but to me... Probably laughing... I can't handle it anymore. I reject the proposal as I go to sulk outside. And I really love chicken.

Leaving the store, I just keep walking down the road as I've been doing for a while. Walking~ Walking~ and more Walking~ through the fog, I come to see a path that leads into the deep forest that surrounds the small town. A very faint but clear path leads into the thick fog. Some of my instincts tell me, that path is straight out of a horror movie. Most of my instincts tell me that, I've got nothing else to do and if I die... I died trying to find something cool. That... is enough. I jog through the path almost tripping on some sticks.

Jogging through this path feels weird. I know I'm not a slow runner, but this forest isn't that big and I've been jogging for a while with absolutely nothing changing. The same tree with the same moss with the same branches pass me over and over. After a minute, I stop to look around, but the fog blocks the way back to the road.

Again, my instincts tell me, GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE... But my cooler instincts tell me, KEEP RUNNING! I'll follow my cooler instincts. If I die, no one would care... probably... not Dad or Mom.

I keep walking forward speeding up slowly. My walk turns into a power walk into a brisk jog into a heavy run into a full sprint. I can't stop sprinting. I don't understand why, but the back of my head shouts "RUN". So, run like hell I do.

Behind me, I can hear something following me with such speed. It's fast. Faster than a bear, lighter than an ant, and bigger than a moose. The only way I hear this "thing" is due to the loud shifting branches just outside the fog from trees seemingly miles away. And its catching up to me.

The crackling branches get closer. I panic. I try to move my legs faster. So fast, I can feel my knees and ankles come loose. It don't matter if they break anymore, I JUST NEED TO GET OUT OF HERE.

I begin a yell I can't control. "AHHHHHHHH!" As if it'll scare off the thing. My running form breaks as I try to grab the air to run faster. And then... I feel a hefty blunt object drive into my back throwing me into the air. Like a car crashing into a person, yet this person doesn't feel any broken bones or any pain?

I fly so far never touching anything, but after a second, I can feel myself passing through something light. Almost as if I went through a soap bubble. Crashing into the ground, I feel myself sliding across some long fresh and wet grass. This grass weakens my impact just enough to not break any bones, only to knock the wind out of me so I can writhe in pain for a solid minute. I think I'll lay here for a little bit.

Laying on my back, I see an old timey sailing ship just sitting in this patch of grass. Perfectly maintained to boot.
