Chapter 8 - This Meal’s on Me

Su Chen was deeply moved by what she had done for him, but being the reserved type, he quietly closed her profile page without leaving any message.

He turned his attention to the trade platform records.

More and more people were applying to trade with him.

Some offered water, bananas, potatoes, and other food items.

Others proposed trading gasoline, refined iron, and metal fragments.

Those who obtained tools without securing food were in a dire situation. Even with the best tools, they couldn't escape starvation. Tragically, some ended up starving to death.

Fortunately, most people offering such items as bargaining chips had food reserves. They weren't foolish enough to starve themselves while hoarding tools or using them to trade for something as trivial as a window.

Sure, a perfect-grade window installed on a vehicle would greatly enhance its defense. But compared to food? It wasn't worth it. Without enough to eat, no one would have the strength to do anything.

Thinking about the beasts that roamed the night, Su Chen shuddered.

Those pitch-black eyes staring at him relentlessly… Truly terrifying.

Gradually, people began to realize the importance of upgrading and fortifying their RVs.

Su Chen decided that he would trade whatever he had to those in need. However, his inventory wasn't vast—he only had six perfect-grade windows.

Therefore, he carefully reviewed the trade offers, selecting the items most beneficial to him.

In this world, kindness alone wasn't enough to survive. Sometimes, it even became a fatal weakness exploited by others. Self-preservation required sharp judgment.

Kindness shouldn't become someone else's bargaining chip.

After much consideration, Su Chen concluded that food wasn't his top priority. He needed to focus on upgrading his RV. He decided to trade all six windows for refined iron.

He still needed 60 pieces of refined iron to upgrade the RV. Checking the trade platform, he found that no one had such a large quantity. The most any single trader offered was around ten pieces.

It made sense. Without Su Chen's system-enhanced capabilities, most people could only rely on their own two hands, so their progress was naturally slower.

Su Chen respected their effort. The fact that they managed to collect even this much showed their determination.

He completed the trades quickly, securing 45 pieces of refined iron. Adding that to the 40 he already had, he now needed only 15 more pieces to upgrade his RV.

In truth, Su Chen could easily obtain the required refined iron himself.

But the perfect-grade bulletproof windows were now useless to him—just scrap. Giving them to those in need felt like a way to repurpose waste.

While Su Chen was pondering how to obtain the remaining refined iron, he received a message.

It was from Jiang Susu:

("Hello, Su Chen. I noticed you visited my profile earlier. Was there something you needed?")

Su Chen froze. He hadn't expected profile visits to leave a visible record. A clear oversight.

"What now? She must think I need something from her. What should I say?"

Feeling awkward, Su Chen quickly came up with a topic.

("Hello, Miss Jiang. We've interacted briefly before. Today, I happened to notice my fan club. Did you start that?")

Jiang Susu, perhaps embarrassed, replied:

("Please don't be upset. I saw a lot of online discussions about you—some of them negative. I felt they were slandering you. From our previous interactions, I didn't think you were like that at all, so I started the fan club.")

Her response, though gentle, felt slightly off.

Su Chen couldn't deny it—he had developed a small fondness for this girl. To show his gratitude and trust, he decided to thank her.

("Thank you for your support over these days. I'm not sure how to repay you. How about this? I recently obtained some meat slices. Would you like some as a token of appreciation?")

Worried she might misunderstand, Su Chen quickly added:

("Don't get me wrong. Think of it as a salary for running the fan club. You've worked hard, and it can't be easy for a girl to survive in this world, let alone manage a fan club.")

Jiang Susu replied humbly:

("Not at all. I'm not alone—I have my younger sister with me. It's much easier with two people. I'm not overly tired, either. After struggling to find food initially, we've gained some experience and can manage now. Running the fan club is just a hobby to pass the time.")

Seeing her response, Su Chen couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.

Why was she living with her sister while most others survived alone?

Not that it was his concern. Su Chen didn't want to be distracted by such matters. His focus remained on building his strength and achieving his goals.

Believing two people would require more food, Su Chen sent ten pieces of meat.

Perspective Shift

A black-haired woman in a dark jacket was driving an RV. This was Jiang Susu. Sitting in the passenger seat was her younger sister, Jiang Cancan.

"Big Sis, why are you so insistent on running Su Chen's fan club? You're already exhausted from driving all day to search for food, and now you're spending your nights managing it."

Jiang Susu's gaze remained fixed on the road as she skillfully handled the steering wheel. She exuded a cool, confident aura.

Her beauty was striking, rivaling that of any celebrity, with an elegance that even surpassed theirs.

After a moment of silence, Jiang Susu finally spoke.

"Sis, you don't understand. I admire Su Chen's character. Seeing people slander him online makes me feel awful."

Just then, a notification sounded.

[Congratulations! You've received 10 premium meat slices from Su Chen. They're tender and rich in protein, perfect for replenishing energy. Please collect them promptly.]

Seeing this message, a faint blush spread across Jiang Susu's cheeks, creating a stark contrast with her earlier composed demeanor.

Jiang Cancan noticed this and couldn't suppress her laughter.

"Wow, sis! Did you seriously blush just from a notification?"

Jiang Susu shot her sister a sharp glare, her tone threatening:

"Jiang Cancan, do you have a death wish today? How dare you tease me? You're done for tonight!"
