Chereads / Dying Wish (love and Anatomy) / Chapter 2 - chapter 1

Chapter 2 - chapter 1

Dr. Tristan Hale stared out the window of his high-rise New York office, watching the chaos of the city unfold below. His black hair, messy from running his hands through it for the hundredth time, barely reflected the cool light filtering through the glass. His blue eyes were fixed on the skyline, though his mind was elsewhere.

The phone on his desk buzzed, and he didn't need to look to know who it was. The familiar British accent would soon be booming on the other end. It was Jared Mitchell his best friend and fellow surgeon. Jared was never one to let silence linger for long.

"Tristan! My old friend!" Jared's voice rang through, rich with excitement. "How are you, mate? Still slaving away in the big city?"

Tristan smirked and leaned back in his chair, rolling his eyes at the familiar tease. "You know it, Jared. If I'm not here, who's going to fix the broken hearts of this town?"

Jared chuckled. "Ah, the world needs its heroes. But seriously, you've been talking about coming to Switzerland for ages. What's holding you back?"

Tristan exhaled slowly, rubbing his temple. "You know the answer to that. Work. There's a lot of it here, and I've got some of the best teams at my disposal. Why should I leave?"

"Because Switzerland is calling, that's why." Jared's voice dropped into a mock-serious tone. "Listen, Tristan. This is a game changer. The hospital here is looking to expand its heart program, and we could be the ones to shape the future. I'm talking about a research center, a real program that can revolutionize how heart surgery is done. And you-you're the only one I want beside me to make it happen."

Tristan ran a hand through his hair again, his gaze drifting back to the city. "I've heard the pitch before, Jared. I don't need another project. The team here's already pushing the envelope. Why go to Switzerland when I've got everything I need right here?"

Jared's voice softened, trying a different approach. "Because, mate, you've earned it. This isn't just another job. It's a chance to be part of something historic. And you've always been about changing lives, right?"

Tristan paused, considering. He was about changing lives. That was why he had gotten into this field, why he had worked so tirelessly over the years, why he was one of the best in the world. But there was something about the idea of uprooting his life, leaving behind the city that had made him who he was, that didn't sit right.

"I don't know, Jared. I'm not looking for a change. I'm comfortable where I am."

"Comfortable?" Jared laughed, though there was a knowing edge to his voice. "You've been at the top of your game for years now, Tristan. You're known in every corner of the globe. You've got women fawning over you, colleagues asking for your autograph. But this-this is about your legacy, mate. You can build something here that lasts forever. You've got the chance to leave your mark on the world. And let's be honest-don't you miss a challenge?"

The words stung, but Jared wasn't wrong. Tristan had always thrived on challenges, on pushing himself beyond his limits. But he had his reasons for avoiding change. He had spent so many years focused on his career that everything else-friendships, relationships-had been pushed aside.

"I've got my own research here, Jared. And I'm not looking for more distractions."

"I get it, but let me be clear," Jared persisted, his voice shifting to a more persuasive tone. "This is different. You've built an empire in New York. You've shown the world what you can do. But now, you've got a chance to do something that'll define your entire career. I know you, Tristan. You need something to get excited about. Trust me, I wouldn't be begging you if I didn't think this was the opportunity of a lifetime."

Tristan leaned forward in his chair, clasping his hands in front of him. Jared's words were tempting, but the thought of leaving everything behind was still a tough pill to swallow. His reputation, his patients, the life he'd built-it was all here. But Switzerland... the idea of starting something fresh, of truly changing the future of heart surgery, was a compelling vision.

He sighed, glancing at the stack of files on his desk. There would always be work to do, patients to care for. The question was, could he leave it all behind?

"Alright," he finally said, leaning back in his chair. "I'll come. But only because I know you'll never let me hear the end of it if I don't."

Jared's laugh was immediate and loud. "I knew you'd come around! I swear, I've never met anyone so stubborn. But, seriously, Tristan, you won't regret this. Trust me."

"Fine," Tristan replied, a reluctant smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "But just so you know, I'm not doing this for you. I'm doing it for medicine."

"Yeah, yeah," Jared teased. "Just remember who talked you into it when you're on that private jet with the Swiss Alps in your sight."

Tristan couldn't help but laugh at the mental image of himself being carted off to Switzerland in some VIP-style fashion. It wasn't quite how he imagined his next big move, but maybe that's what made it exciting. Maybe it was time for a change.

"Alright," he said, the decision solidifying. "I'll give it a shot. But I'm not staying long if I don't like it."

Jared's voice was filled with triumph. "I'll make sure the welcome mat is rolled out. But you'll see, Tristan. It's not just the Alps calling your name-it's the future of heart surgery."

Tristan grinned as he stood up and moved to his window, gazing out at the sprawling city of New York. He had made his decision, and now there was no turning back. As much as he told himself he didn't need a change, deep down, he knew this could be the challenge he had been waiting for.

"Alright, Jared," he said, his tone shifting to something a bit more playful. "But if you try to convince me to start wearing lederhosen, I swear, I'll turn the plane around."

Jared's laughter filled the line. "Deal. But you'll be the one who regrets it when you see me in mine."

Tristan chuckled, shaking his head as he hung up. It was time for something new. And whether he liked it or not, the good doctor was heading to Switzerland.
