Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Crown’s Awakening

Chapter 1: The Crown's Awakening

The city of Etheria was a patchwork of splendor and squalor. Its towering spires and gilded palaces gleamed under the moonlight, but in the shadow of those monuments to wealth, the slums festered with desperation. Liam Gray knew the streets better than anyone; they were his home, his battleground, and his prison.

It was another cold, bitter night when Liam found himself rummaging through the abandoned district near the old library. The area was rumored to be cursed, but rumors didn't scare someone who fought for scraps daily. He had heard whispers of hidden treasures buried within its crumbling walls, and desperation often outweighed fear.

The library's grandeur had faded with time, its once-polished marble now cracked and overrun by vines. Liam pushed through the creaking wooden doors, his breath visible in the chill. Dust motes danced in the faint light from his lantern, illuminating rows of toppled shelves and scattered books.

He hadn't expected much—maybe something to pawn for a loaf of bread. Instead, his eyes caught something peculiar. A faint glow emanated from a corner of the room, almost imperceptible at first. It wasn't like the flicker of fireflies or the cold gleam of moonlight; it pulsed, alive and waiting.

Curiosity drove Liam closer, his steps tentative. Pushing aside the debris, he uncovered a pedestal draped in layers of cobwebs. Atop it sat a crown—black as the void, adorned with strange runes that shimmered gold. Its presence was magnetic, an unspoken call reverberating in his mind.

"Just a crown," Liam muttered, but even as he spoke, he felt his hand reach for it against his better judgment.

The moment his fingers brushed the cold metal, a shock coursed through his body. Memories that weren't his flooded his mind—visions of battles, rulers, and a kingdom long forgotten. Pain and power intertwined as the crown's runes blazed brighter, bathing the room in golden light.

Liam fell to his knees, gasping. The light surged outward, shaking the foundation of the library. As the glow subsided, the once-quiet relic seemed alive, its power coursing through Liam.

"What... what just happened?" he whispered, clutching his head.

Before he could collect his thoughts, the ground beneath him rumbled. He scrambled to his feet as the walls of the library began to crack and crumble. The crown, still in his hands, pulsed once more, and suddenly, a voice echoed in his mind.

"Liam Gray, the Forgotten Monarch rises again. The fate of Etheria rests upon your shoulders."

The words froze him in place. Monarch? Fate of Etheria? He barely had enough power to keep himself fed, let alone carry the weight of a kingdom. But as the dust settled and silence returned, Liam realized there was no turning back.

The crown had chosen him, and with it came a destiny he neither wanted nor understood.

As Liam stepped out into the night, the city seemed different, its shadows deeper and its air heavier. Somewhere in the distance, a pair of watchful eyes gleamed, their owner retreating silently into the dark.

Unbeknownst to Liam, the crown's awakening had sent ripples across the land, and forces—both allies and enemies—were already moving to confront the rise of the Forgotten Monarch.
