Chapter 1 - Lupus sapiens

Greetings, my erect-walking friend. My name is… Huh, for better or worse I don't have a name, but you can call me Lupus sapiens, as long as you call yourself Homo sapiens. I am writing this from the realization of my approaching imminent decease. My paws are no longer fit for running, but have enough power to hold a writing tool. As strange as it sounds, I sneaked to the human dwelling, it's yours or your kin's. You see, my past entries, which was made on the ground by stick, have not been very long-lived. My position should be very comically, I'd like to see it from the side. If you are interested, I wedging writing tool between two of my paws toes. Anyway, I digress.

There are a church in town, which is near my "home" – forest. I have listened to speechesof the person, who lived there, he often told about confession. I can't talk, so, this death letter don't just my only legacy, but also will be my peculiar death-bed confession. Don't misunderstand me, my erect-walking friend, I'm still sceptical about this thing called religion, but impending end of lifemake me catch at a straw. Well, I should begin with the beginning.

Huh… I don't know, was it my imagination or for real, but when I had my sight, the first I saw was my fellow creature with green fur, horns, later I found that this horns was deer's, there were a spider's web between this horns. He had a mask on neb, it was rough made, but I could see his eyes, they were warm. Back when, he was talking with me. Unfortunately, I don't remember his whole speech, only a couple of words "leader" and "keeper", at this exact moment my mind was awakened.

I was more curious than my brothers and sisters, more over, they annoyed me, back then I made my first sin. Fratricide. I probably not the fist, but also not the last wolf, who killed his fellow creature and family member, but… When I think back on this now, I feel ashamed. I killed my brother not in a fair fight, I pushed him into the bear's den. My six-month old brother didn't have any chance. Do I regret it? It's difficult question, religiously I should, but because of my experience and ruled of wild nature I don't care. The most adaptable survived and because of my intelligence I have adapted to any situation. So, why am I feel ashamed? I killed him not by myself, it's a credit to the bear.

When the time came, I became a member of the pack. Being the regular pack member was awful, so naturally I began to aspire to be the leader. Successful hunting, sharing the , and, let's face it, getting rid of the competition by killing them, all of these helped me a lot. My second sin. Oh, if I were a man, I would be called maniac, but I was ready to do anything to minimize things that can be threat to my life. My pack was growing, we were finding more preys, which led to even more growth. In hunger times we were eating each others. But all around me stayed idiots. The third sin – cannibalism, the fourth sin – pride. I had everything, my erect-walking friend, I had food, I had females, safe den, and I was happy. The fifth sin – hedonism.

It didn't last long, when I was three I already realised that my death is just the question of time. There weren't at least the one with the same or bigger than my intelligent among my multiple offspring, this mean that the back will forget me after my death. So, I decided to leave something after me. Before that I already had seen your kin's hunters, my erect-walking friend, I had seen that they are superior to me. The plan was simple, I found an erect-walking's settlement and started sneaking in it. I listened to your speech, examined at your writing, and studied in general. As you see, I was quite capable student since I'm writing this to you. My pack was dumb, but as it turned out, they had some intelligence, they noticed my oddities, but they put up with it. Because everyone who challenged me died, from my claws and fangs or from, he-he, accidents.

It went on like that for another three years, I started to leave writings on the ground with asking for food, sometimes right infront of people… It was a pleasure to watch their dumbfounded faces. At the same time, I continued to procreate in the hope that at least one of my offspring would possess my intelligence, unfortunately I didn't reach success in this… Maybe the specie of Lupus sapiens will ended on me. I really wanted to see if we can achieve what people have achieved, but unfortunately time is not on my side. That's sad, really sad. I wish I could cry, my erect-walking friend, but alas, my body structure doesn't allow me to do that. I can already feel my hind legs shutting down, I am older than fifteen after all. My eyes are blurring, I'm not even sure what I'm writing anymore, my head is so heavy, and there's so much I haven't written, so much I haven't told you. But I think I am a bed storyteller, all my life was spend in hunting, breeding, studying and sleeping. What a pathetic life, right? The saddest part that all, what will remain after intelligent me, not just from wolf, is this death letter, which I write to you. Please, my erect-walking friend, if you're the one who found my dead body, bury me like you will bury a human on graveyard near church with tombstone, even if it's a simple stone. I don't want to die as a beast, I don't want to die, my erect-walking friend, I don't want to die! Wolf's life last only for fifteen years! People are still children for the same period of time! That's unfair! I've been given a mind, but all my life was spent among stupid fellow creatures, without ability of talking to the only creatures who could understand me! And I will die so young!

Anyway… Pack sensed my old age, I was betrayed, from hunter I became a prey and hided in dwelling, where I am writing this letter. Huh… My front paws are starting to shut down too, I want to write more, but my death is nature's will. Goodbye, my erect-walking friend. And thank you, thanks for reading, extra thanks if you will bury my body.

A small-town pastor was not a little surprised to find a wolf sitting at the table in his home after returning from a worship at the local church. He panicked and tried to escape, but saw that the beat wasn't moving. Man approached to the animal and made sure that it's dead because of oldness. Then, he noticed something unexpected, between the fingers of one of the wolf's paws was a pen. And the sheet, covered bycrooked letters, was laying on table. Curiosity taken over pastor and he read the letter. Dumbfounded, he went to the local hunters and they eagerly started to tell stories about a wolf, who was using rocks during hunts and about strange messy traps with neat teeth and claws marks, like something toothy and clawed made them. In response, the pastor showed them the wolf's body and deathletter in his house.

Wolf was called Adam, his body was taken for examination by scientiests. They confirmed that this individual possessed an abnormal brain that resembled a human's one in anatomy. Lately Adam was buried when he wanted. On his tombstone was carved the text of his death letter, so everyone can see the legacy of the first Lupus sapiens.
