Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Proposal

The evening air was thick with anticipation as Simi set the dining table for dinner. She could feel the tension crackling in the air, a tangible reminder of the unresolved issues that had been simmering beneath the surface since Gbolahan's last visit. Abosede moved quickly and purposefully through the kitchen, but Simi could see concern on her mother's face."Are you okay, Mom?" Simi enquired, looking up from arranging the cutlery.Abosede paused, her hands resting on the countertop, and took a deep breath. "Just trying to prepare for whatever Gbolahan has planned tonight." "Just trying to prepare for whatever Gbolahan has planned tonight."Simi nodded, her stomach twisting with the thought. She had sensed something was up since Gbolahan stormed out after their last argument. The air was thick with unspoken words, and she could not shake the feeling that this dinner would be unique.Temi chatted excitedly about her day at the park as they gathered around the table, blissfully unaware of the tension that existed between them. Simi forced herself to smile and interact with her daughter, but her thoughts were racing. What could Gbolahan possibly wish to discuss? When Gbolahan arrived, he walked into the dining room with a sense of authority that immediately changed the atmosphere. He gave them a curt nod before taking his seat at the head of the table. The warmth of family dinner seemed distant now, replaced by a sense of apprehension."Let us eat," he said simply, and they started serving themselves in silence.Simi stole glances at her father as they settled down to eat. He was staring at his plate, but she could feel his tension radiating through the air like heat from a flame. After a few moments of awkward silence, he cleared his throat."I have something important to discuss," Gbolahan stated, his voice firm and unwavering.Simi's heart raced as she exchanged concerned looks with Abosede. "What is it?" she enquired cautiously.Gbolahan looked at her with a serious expression. "I believe it is time for you to consider an arranged marriage."Simi felt that the ground beneath her feet had shifted. "What?" she exclaimed, her voice full of disbelief. "What?" she exclaimed, her voice full of disbelief."This is what is best for our family," he said, leaving no room for debate."What is best for our family?" Simi responded incredulously. What about what I want? "You do not even know what I want!"Gbolahan leaned forward in his chair, his gaze narrowed slightly. "This is not just about you anymore, Simi. It is about securing our future and providing stability for all of us."Simi felt a surge of defiance rise inside her. "You can not just decide my future without even consulting me! "I am not a pawn in your game!""Game?" Gbolahan responded sharply. "This is the reality! You must understand that sometimes sacrifices are necessary for the greater good."Abosede watched silently as tensions between father and daughter rose; she could feel the weight of their conflict press down on her chest like a heavy stone. "Gbolahan," she said gently, hoping to diffuse the situation. "Maybe we should discuss this calmly... ""No!" Simi interrupted, her voice filled with emotion. "We are talking about my life! You cannot control everything!"Gbolahan's face hardened as he leaned back in his chair, arms crossed over his chest. "Do you think you know better than me? I have worked hard to provide for this family! "I am doing what I believe is necessary to protect us."Simi felt tears prick her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. "Protect us?" Or do they control us? You make decisions without thinking about how they will affect me or my happiness."Your happiness?" Gbolahan scoffed. "Do you believe you can act on your whims without thinking about the consequences? "The world is not as simple as you believe!"The battle of wills filled the room with electric tension, leaving everyone silent. Temi sat wide-eyed between them, sensing the impending storm but unable to comprehend its full extent."Mom!" Temi finally spoke up, looking from Simi to Gbolahan with concern on her small face. "Why are you fighting?"Simi knelt beside her daughter, taking Temi's hands in her own. "It is okay, sweetie," she said softly, attempting to smile despite the turmoil inside her heart. "We are just having a disagreement.""Disagreement?" Gbolahan responded incredulously. "This is not just a disagreement! "This is about your future!""Yes! "My future!" Simi shot back, defiantly.Abosede intervened again, placing a hand on Gbolahan's arm to calm him down. "Let us take a step back," she said gently but firmly. "We can discuss this without raising our voices."Gbolahan exhaled sharply but nodded reluctantly; he seemed to realize that escalating tensions wouldn't help anyone."Fine," he said tightly but still glaring at Simi with intensity.Simi took a deep breath and tried to steady herself; she knew this was a pivotal moment in their family dynamic—a moment that would shape not only her future but also their relationships moving forward."Can we please talk about this rationally?" Abosede urged gently as they all settled back into their seats around the table.Gbolahan looked at Simi again; there was a flicker of something—perhaps regret or frustration—crossing his features before he spoke again."I want what's best for you," he said finally, though his tone was still firm. "This arrangement will provide security and stability.""But at what cost?" Simi countered passionately. "You're asking me to give up my dreams—my autonomy—for your idea of security.""It's not just my idea," Gbolahan replied sharply. "It's what our culture expects! We have responsibilities!"Simi felt anger boiling within her; she wanted to scream that those expectations shouldn't dictate her life choices! But instead, she took a deep breath and tried to remain composed."I understand cultural values," she said slowly, choosing her words carefully. "But I also believe that love and personal choice should play a role in marriage.""Love doesn't always lead to stability!" Gbolahan argued back fiercely."Neither does control!" Simi shot back defiantly. The room fell silent again as both sides stared each other down like warriors preparing for battle; each unwilling to back down from their positions yet knowing deep down that compromise would be necessary if they were ever going to move forward together as a family. Finally breaking through tension-filled silence came Temi's small voice again: "Can we eat now?"Simi looked at her daughter and felt a pang of guilt wash over her; here was this innocent child caught in between their conflict—her heart yearning for peace amidst chaos swirling around them all right now seeking solace found only through love shared between family members united together facing whatever storms lay ahead willing courageously fight back against darkness encroaching ever closer threatening engulf everything they held dear reminding how much life existed beyond walls surrounding them all right now waiting patiently until next round came around again offering strength resilience built upon bonds forged through trials faced along journey ahead guiding light shining brightly illuminating paths leading towards brighter days awaiting discovery just beyond horizon stretching endlessly before them beckoning gently towards new beginnings awaiting discovery just beyond horizon stretching endlessly before...With a heavy sigh escaping from deep within herself filled only by sounds echoing from nearby streets bustling alive under stars twinkling overhead illuminating paths ahead leading towards uncertain futures waiting just beyond horizons,Simi nodded slowly toward Temi: "Yes… let's eat."As they resumed their meal—each bite tasting bittersweet against backdrop filled only by sounds echoing from nearby streets bustling alive under stars twinkling overhead illuminating paths ahead leading towards uncertain futures waiting just beyond horizons—Simi couldn't shake off feeling like shadows loomed ever closer threatening engulf everything they held dear reminding how much life existed beyond walls surrounding them all right now waiting patiently until next round came around again offering strength resilience built upon bonds forged through trials faced along journey ahead guiding light shining brightly illuminating paths leading towards brighter days awaiting discovery just beyond horizon stretching endlessly before...
