Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Abosede’s Secret

The evening air in the family home was thick with unspoken words as Simi sat at the kitchen table, her heart racing in her chest. The warmth of the room contrasted sharply with the chill of the revelations she had just encountered. Gbolahan had retreated to his study after the confrontation, leaving Simi and her mother, Abosede, alone in the kitchen, surrounded by the lingering aroma of spices from dinner. Simi stared at her mother, who was washing dishes in silence, the sound of running water punctuating the tense atmosphere. Abosede's hands moved methodically, but Simi could see the tension in her mother's shoulders, the way the muscles tightened with every motion.

"Mom," Simi began hesitantly, her voice barely above a whisper. "I need to know why you never told me."

Abosede paused, her hands stilling in the soapy water. She turned to face Simi, her expression a mixture of sorrow and resolve. "I didn't want to hurt you," she said softly, her voice almost breaking.

"Hurt me?" Simi echoed, anger rising within her. "You've kept this from me my entire life! How could you think hiding the truth would protect me?"

Abosede sighed deeply, the hint of tears glistening in her eyes as she gazed at the table. "I was afraid of what your father would do if he found out the truth."

"What do you mean?" Simi pressed, disbelief mixed with hurt swirling within her. "What could justify keeping something like this a secret?"

"Simi, there are layers to this that you don't understand," Abosede said, taking a step back from the sink, her hands trembling slightly as she dried them on a dish towel.

"Then help me understand!" Simi felt anticipation building within her. "I deserve to know, Mom. Please."

Taking a deep breath, Abosede's gaze drifted to the window, where the last rays of sunlight faded into darkness. "When I was pregnant with you, your father was not the man he is today. He was ambitious—driven by power and status. I feared that if he discovered your true parentage, he would react violently."

Simi's mind raced as she processed this revelation. "My true parentage? What are you talking about?"

There was a long pause before Abosede spoke again, her voice trembling. "You were born from a relationship I had before I met your father. Your biological father… he was someone Gbolahan despised."

Simi felt as if the ground had shifted beneath her feet. "What? Why didn't you ever tell me? Who is he?"

"I was afraid," Abosede admitted tearfully, a floodgate of emotions opening as she recalled her past. "I thought I could protect you by keeping it a secret. I wanted you to have a stable life with Gbolahan."

"But that's not fair!" Simi exclaimed, hurt bubbling over. "You made this choice for me without even asking! You let me grow up thinking I was something I'm not!"

"I thought it was for the best!" Abosede cried, her voice breaking as tears streamed down her cheeks. "I wanted to shield you from pain—the pain of knowing that your very existence could tear our family apart."

A wave of conflicting emotions washed over Simi—anger, betrayal, sadness. It felt like a storm brewing inside her, threatening to spill over. She took a step back from the table, struggling to process everything. "So all this time… Gbolahan didn't even know?"

"No," Abosede said firmly, wiping away her tears with determination. "He believed you were his daughter, and I let him think that because I thought it would keep us safe."

"But what about now?" Simi asked, urgency creeping into her voice. "What happens if he finds out? What if those men he's dealing with discover the truth?"

Abosede looked into Simi's eyes, fear and resolve mixed together. "That's why we need to be careful. We can't let anyone else find out—especially not Gbolahan."

"I can't believe this!" Simi shook her head, fighting back tears. "You should have trusted me enough to tell me!"

"I know," Abosede replied quietly, a hint of regret lacing her tone. "But I was scared—scared for you and our family. I thought keeping you in the dark would somehow shield you from a fate I couldn't control."

Silence enveloped them, heavy with the weight of generations of secrets. Simi thought of the sacrifices she'd made for Gbolahan's approval while grappling with this newfound truth. The unfairness of it all pressed against her chest, as if she were suffocating under the weight of unspoken family history.

"What do we do now?" Simi finally asked, her voice tinged with defeat.

"We need to be strategic," Abosede said resolutely, wiping her tears and regaining some composure. "We must protect ourselves while navigating these dangerous waters."

Simi nodded slowly, uncertainty swirling within her like a cauldron. "But how do we keep this from Gbolahan? What if he starts digging and discovers the truth on his own?"

"We keep our heads down," Abosede replied, a determined glint in her eyes. "We focus on our family, on the love that binds us together. We support each other through whatever comes next."

Simi swallowed hard, the enormity of the situation washing over her. She felt like she was living in a fragile bubble, one that could burst with just a wrong word or stormy revelation. "And what if those men you mentioned come for us? What if they threaten what we have?"

"We prepare," Abosede said, her voice steady despite the fear lurking in her eyes. "We stay vigilant, and we lean on each other. There's strength in our bond, and together we can weather the storm."

As they sat together in the kitchen, the warmth wrapping around them against the cool evening breeze, Simi felt a flicker of hope ignite within her. No matter how tangled their history might be, she understood that they could navigate this precarious path, but only if they faced their fears head-on, united.

"For so long, I've struggled to win Dad's approval," Simi said softly, her voice barely a whisper. "But now I realize that I need to find my own identity, not one defined by him or his expectations."

Abosede nodded, pride shining through her tear-stained face. "You are so much more than any label he tries to place on you. You are strong, compassionate, and intelligent. Your life is your own, and it's time you embrace that."

Simi took a deep breath, allowing her mother's words to settle in her heart. "I want to understand my origins. I want to know my biological father and why he meant so much to you."

Abosede hesitated but then nodded slowly. "I'm willing to share what I know, but we have to be careful. Knowledge can be both a light and a curse."

As they continued to talk in hushed tones, the shadows cast by the kitchen light danced across the walls, mirroring the turbulence within their hearts. Each passing moment deepened Simi's understanding of their family's complexities, intertwining love and fear in a way she had never fathomed before. Determination began to replace her uncertainty, driving her to protect not just herself, but the fragile bond that held them together in an unpredictable future.

In that warmth-filled kitchen, Simi resolved that together, they would face whatever storms lay ahead, armed with honesty, love, and the fierce protection of family.
