Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Into the Wild

The dense jungle around Jonash seemed to stretch endlessly in every direction, a labyrinth of twisted trees, thick vines, and thick layers of moss. The air was heavy with humidity, clinging to his skin as if the jungle itself were trying to swallow him whole. It had been a full day since they'd left their makeshift campsite, and Jonash could feel the weight of it all—the heat, the exhaustion, the worry for what was still out there—pressing down on his chest. Yet, there was something else now, something he hadn't expected: a growing sense of purpose.

He wasn't just running anymore. He wasn't just fleeing from danger or hiding from enemies. For the first time since he'd arrived in this brutal world, Jonash felt like he was taking control. His mind had shifted, the panic fading as he focused on the task at hand. He couldn't afford to be distracted. Not now. Not with everything that had happened to them.

"We should move east," Eryk said, his voice low and serious as he scanned the jungle ahead. He wasn't looking at Jonash or Ava—his gaze was sharp, darting between the shadows of trees. There was a kind of alertness in his movements, a practiced ease that Jonash envied. Ava, walking beside Jonash, nodded in agreement, though her face remained weary. They had been on the move for hours, each step taking them further into the unknown.

Jonash wiped the sweat off his forehead, trying to keep his nerves in check. His stomach growled, reminding him just how long it had been since they'd eaten anything substantial. The small rations they had left weren't nearly enough, and he knew it. But there was no time to stop and scavenge—they had to keep moving, keep pushing forward.

"East?" Jonash asked, his voice hoarse from dehydration. "What's out there?"

"Resources," Eryk replied. "Hunting grounds, water, maybe even something useful in the ruins."

Jonash raised an eyebrow at that. "Ruins?"

Ava, who had been quiet for most of the day, finally spoke up. "The jungle is full of them. Old places, forgotten by most players. Some say the ruins hold hidden treasures, other say it's just a place to die."

Jonash glanced at her, surprised by the sharpness in her voice. She seemed more withdrawn than usual, her eyes dark with exhaustion. He could see how much the weight of their situation had taken its toll on her.

"We need to find food," Jonash said, trying to focus on something other than the tension building between them. "Do you think the ruins will have anything?"

Eryk glanced at him, his expression unreadable. "It's not the first place I'd go, but we're running out of options. If we don't find something soon, we'll be in trouble." His gaze flicked to the surrounding trees, searching for any signs of danger. "I'll go first. Stay close."

Jonash and Ava fell into line behind him, moving cautiously through the thick underbrush. The air was thick with the scent of earth and decay, the sounds of distant creatures echoing around them. Jonash tried to keep his senses sharp, every nerve on high alert. He knew they couldn't afford to be caught off guard. They needed to find shelter and food, and they needed it now.

As they ventured deeper into the jungle, the trees began to thin out, and soon they found themselves standing before a set of stone steps, overgrown with moss and vines. It was a clear indication that they were approaching one of the ancient ruins Eryk had mentioned.

"This is it," Eryk said, his voice tense. "Stay close. Keep your guard up."

Jonash looked up at the ruin's towering stone walls, the ancient carvings and symbols worn away by time. There was a strange aura around the place, like it was still alive in some way, still hiding secrets deep within its walls. The jungle had reclaimed most of it, but the structure itself seemed almost... untouched. Jonash couldn't help but feel a shiver crawl up his spine.

"Think there's anything inside?" Jonash asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Eryk nodded, his eyes scanning the area. "I'd bet there's something useful. A stash of supplies, maybe. Or weapons. But we need to be careful. Ruins like these aren't just abandoned."

Ava stepped forward, her expression unreadable. "You think it's dangerous?"

"Everything's dangerous here," Eryk replied flatly. "Let's just keep our wits about us."

Jonash nodded and followed Eryk as he led the way up the stone steps. The air felt heavier here, as though it was filled with the weight of history. The stones beneath their feet groaned slightly as they ascended, and Jonash couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching them. His grip tightened around his improvised spear, his senses heightened. Every snap of a twig, every rustle of leaves seemed louder now.

At the top of the steps, Eryk stopped, holding up a hand to signal for them to halt. He crouched low, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the entrance of the ruin. Jonash and Ava dropped to their knees beside him, waiting for whatever was to come.

"Stay quiet," Eryk whispered. "I'll go first."

He motioned for them to stay put and crept toward the entrance, his movements swift and silent. Jonash and Ava exchanged a glance before following, moving as quietly as they could. The moment they crossed the threshold into the ruin, the temperature seemed to drop. The air was thick with dust, and the dim light that filtered through cracks in the stone made everything feel unnaturally still.

The interior of the ruin was a vast, hollowed-out chamber, its walls covered in faded murals and intricate carvings. Most of the furniture had been destroyed by time, but there were still remnants of what had once been—a table, a few broken chairs, and a pile of rotting wood in one corner.

Eryk was already inspecting a large stone pedestal in the center of the room, his fingers tracing the engravings on its surface. "This looks... old," he muttered. "It might be worth checking out."

Jonash took a few steps forward, his curiosity getting the better of him. He was about to ask Eryk what he meant when a loud creak echoed from somewhere deep within the ruin, followed by a low, rumbling growl.

Ava froze, her eyes wide with fear. "What was that?"

Jonash's heart skipped a beat. "Did you hear that?"

Eryk was already moving, his body tense as he glanced around the room. "Stay low," he hissed. "We're not alone."

The growl came again, louder this time, and it was followed by a sound that sent a chill through Jonash's spine—the unmistakable shuffle of something large moving in the dark recesses of the ruin. It was getting closer.

Then, without warning, a roar erupted from the depths of the ruin, shaking the very ground beneath them. The sound was primal, bone-rattling, and filled with an ancient fury that Jonash could feel deep in his chest. His eyes darted around, searching for the source of the noise, but there was nothing in sight.

"What the hell is that?" Jonash whispered, his voice tight with fear.

Eryk's expression was grim as he drew his weapon—an intricately carved blade that gleamed faintly in the dim light. "Whatever it is, it's big. And it's coming our way."

Ava grabbed Jonash's arm, her fingers trembling. "We need to get out of here. Now."

But Jonash couldn't tear his eyes away from the darkness ahead. The roar came again, this time louder, closer, as if the very walls of the ruin were shaking in response. Something was coming—something massive, something dangerous. And Jonash couldn't shake the feeling that it wasn't just a beast.

The air was thick with anticipation, and Jonash's heart pounded in his chest as the rumbling grew louder. Whatever was in there, whatever was lurking in the depths of the ruin, wasn't something they could afford to ignore.

Eryk's gaze met Jonash's, and without a word, the two of them nodded in unison. There was no going back now. They had to face whatever was coming.

Jonash drew his spear, his hands shaking as he readied himself.

And then—the roar came again. Closer this time. Louder.

Something was emerging from the shadows.
