Chereads / THE ETERNAL GAMEKEEPER / Chapter 4 - The Price of Knowledge

Chapter 4 - The Price of Knowledge

The soft hum of his computer was the only sound in the quiet room. Caden sat hunched over, eyes glued to the glowing screen. His fingers danced across the keyboard, typing, searching, always searching. He was no longer just playing Eternal Dominion—he was trying to understand it. To understand himself.

His obsession had grown worse with each passing hour. The glitch, the mysterious figure, the cryptic messages from the system—it all felt connected. But how? What did it mean? Caden couldn't let it go. Every clue was a thread he had to follow, every new detail an answer to a puzzle he didn't fully comprehend.

He ran another search, diving deep into the game's forums, lore archives, even obscure fan sites, looking for anything that could explain the phenomenon he was experiencing. But the answers were always vague. No one had encountered anything like this before.

There has to be something more... He rubbed his temples, trying to push away the nagging headache that had been following him since the raid.

His eyes darted to the clock on the wall. Nearly midnight. His stomach rumbled, but he ignored it. The gnawing hunger was nothing compared to the hunger for answers.

Just a little longer.

He clicked on yet another article about in-game power systems and glitches. The usual articles about mechanics and power-ups filled his screen. Nothing useful. Frustrated, Caden slammed his fist on the desk. This was pointless.

Then, in the corner of his vision, something changed.

A dark shadow flickered on the edge of his screen. His heart skipped a beat. Caden leaned forward, his pulse quickening.

It was there again—the glitching figure. For a moment, it was almost like a mirage, a distortion in the digital space, its shape flickering like static on an old TV screen. And just as quickly, it vanished.

Was it real?

He sat frozen for a moment, staring at the screen. It had been real. The figure, that presence—it felt like it was watching him. Waiting.

Before he could process the encounter, a sudden surge of energy coursed through him, pulling his attention back to the game. His avatar, standing at the edge of the guild hall, was calling him back into the world.

Caden hesitated for a moment, but then he clicked on the team chat. Astra, Selene, Kai, and Lara's avatars were already gathered in the guild hall, standing in a semicircle around him.

Astra's fiery red hair flickered as she crossed her arms, her usual calm demeanor replaced by a tension that was almost palpable. "Caden," she said, her voice edged with concern. "We need to talk. About what happened."

Caden's stomach tightened. He knew what this was about. The raid. His recklessness. His overuse of power.

"I know," he said quietly, lowering his head. "I… I'm sorry. I didn't mean for it to get out of hand."

Astra's sharp eyes softened, but only slightly. "It's not just that, Caden. You're becoming distant. And your behavior during the raid... You're pushing yourself too hard. If you keep going down this path, you're going to lose control. And we'll lose you."

The weight of her words settled over him like a blanket of ice. He had been so consumed by the power, so obsessed with figuring out what was happening to him, that he hadn't even noticed the distance growing between him and his team.

"I'm fine," Caden muttered, though even he could hear the uncertainty in his own voice. "I'm just… trying to figure things out."

Lara's avatar, a bright smile usually plastered on her face, was gone now. "We get it, Caden. But this is a team game. We need you. And right now, you're pushing everyone away."

Kai stepped forward, his avatar's playful demeanor replaced with a rare seriousness. "You're not alone in this, Caden. We're a team. But you've got to talk to us. Let us help."

Caden felt the weight of their concern, but inside, the stubborn part of him refused to let go. I have to do this. I need to control it. For all of us.

"I'll be fine," he said, forcing a smile. "Let's just focus on the mission. There's a new raid opening up. We can make up for what happened last time."

The team exchanged uncertain looks, but no one argued. They all knew there was no convincing Caden when he made up his mind. So they moved forward, ready to face the raid, even if it meant walking on thin ice.

The new quest had appeared overnight, a high-risk, high-reward raid located in the Abyssal Caverns. The monsters within were said to be nearly unstoppable, and the traps more deadly than anything they'd faced before.

"We've got one shot at this," Astra said, her voice steady despite the tension in the air. "If we fail, it'll be weeks before another opportunity like this comes around."

"We're not failing," Caden said, trying to sound confident. His eyes were already scanning the details of the raid. He had to prove to himself—no, to them—that he could handle this. He wasn't losing control. Not this time.

They gathered their gear, the weight of their mission settling in. As they prepared to enter, Caden's mind was elsewhere. This is it. The test. I can do this.

The Abyssal Caverns were dark, their walls slick with moisture as they descended into the dungeon's depths. The group moved cautiously, their steps echoing in the eerie silence. The air was thick with danger, and the sense of unease grew with every step.

The first wave of monsters attacked quickly—shadowy creatures that seemed to melt into the darkness. Caden felt the familiar rush of power as he summoned his abilities. His body hummed with energy, his senses heightened. He could feel the pull of the power in his veins, urging him to use more.

Just a little more.

His hands moved instinctively, summoning an explosion of energy that decimated the first wave of monsters. The team cheered, but Astra's voice cut through the moment.

"Caden, stop!" she yelled, her tone sharp. "You're pushing it too far!"

But it was too late. The surge of power left him disoriented, his vision blurry. The next wave of monsters appeared faster than he could react. They charged, and the team scrambled to keep up.

Caden's mind was spinning. He needed to control it. He had to prove he could do this. With a single thought, he unleashed another burst of energy, but this time, the world around him distorted. A sharp pain shot through his skull, and everything around him shattered.

The ground trembled beneath their feet, and the cavern's walls began to crack. The monsters in the raid were now in a frenzy, attacking with ferocity that was unlike anything they had encountered before.

"Caden!" Astra shouted, but the words barely reached him through the haze. His vision was swimming, and he could barely hear the chaos unfolding around him.

The monsters pressed in, and the team was caught off-guard. Lara and Kai were overwhelmed by the sheer numbers. Selene was already on the defensive, trying to hold them back, but the monsters were relentless.

Astra's voice broke through the fog in Caden's mind. "Stop! You're killing us!"

Caden blinked, realizing too late what had happened. The power, his power—it had pushed everything to the brink. They were losing. Fast.

Alone in the aftermath, Caden stumbled back to his room. His body felt numb, his mind racing. He hadn't even realized what he'd done. He'd nearly killed his friends.

As he stared at the screen, a familiar glitch flickered at the edge of his vision.

The shadowy figure returned, this time clearer than before. It stared at him with an unsettling intensity, its presence almost suffocating. The figure spoke, its voice reverberating through his thoughts.

"You are the keeper of the balance," it intoned, each word carrying a weight that seemed to press on his chest. "The more you use, the closer you come to the truth. But the truth is a dangerous thing, and power... it comes with a price."

The figure vanished as quickly as it had come, leaving behind a silence that was almost worse than the chaos.

Caden's hands trembled as he turned away from the screen. His heart was pounding in his chest. What had he done? What was happening to him?
