Chapter 3 - Leaving the Nest

Mabel and Myrtle were twins, but they were nothing like each other. Not only did they look nothing alike, they didn't have anything in common either.

Myrtle had bright red hair and freckles, and she was built like a scrawny teenage boy. Her sister Mabel, however, had dark hair and brown eyes, and she had inherited their mother's generously endowed body.

Mabel had always been the "smart" one. She had been moved up grades, and she was adored by all of the teachers for being a straight A student. Myrtle, or Mia as she now insisted on being called, had always struggled with academics. Although she was deeply interested in arts, she had never been able to create something she was proud of enough to show anyone.

They stood together now, and despite how different they looked, nobody could doubt that they were sisters. They stood, arm in arm at the train station, their parents standing around them. Mabel had her suitcase and bag with her, and she was dressed nicely in a plaid skirt and blazer. Mia tucked a flower into Mabel's hair and whispered something.

Mr. and Mrs. Lutz, their parents, tearfully watched as their daughters said their goodbyes. It was hard for them to see their little girl go.

"Mia," Mabel said, holding her sister's hands in her own. "please be nice to yourself."

Mabel was Mia's rock. And she was leaving.

"I'll miss you," Mia couldn't look into her eyes.

"I'll miss you too." Mabel pulled her sister into her arms. But she was leaving.

The train came by, with a gust of wind that ruffled their skirts and messed up their hair. And with that gust of wind, Mabel left.
