Chereads / SYLUS / Chapter 32 - chapter 33

Chapter 32 - chapter 33

The air in the small room seemed to grow thicker as Rose's thoughts churned. The promise Sylus had made—that they would get through this together—kept echoing in her mind. But something about it didn't sit right. It wasn't just the messages or the Consortium's dark intentions. There was a deeper layer to everything, and she felt like she was only scratching the surface.

Sylus was pacing now, his movements deliberate, his gaze occasionally flicking toward the window, his mind clearly elsewhere. Lucas, ever the observer, was scanning the room, checking the locked windows and shadows in the corners. The tension between them was palpable, as if something bigger than they were was on the verge of unfolding.

Then, without warning, Rose's phone buzzed again.

"They're coming for you. You don't know the whole truth yet. But you will soon enough."

The words sent a shiver down her spine. She stood frozen for a moment, staring at the screen. Her fingers hovered above it, but her mind raced faster than she could process.

"Who's sending these?" she asked, her voice shaking, her eyes darting between Sylus and Lucas. "Who knows what's going on?"

Sylus turned sharply, his expression darkening. "We need to leave. Now."

But just as he moved to grab her arm, the walls seemed to tremble. A low hum reverberated through the air, followed by a series of harsh knocks on the door. The noise was so sudden and forceful that it felt almost unnatural, like the air itself was pressing against them.

"What the hell—" Lucas started, but before he could finish, the door flew open with a violent force.

Standing in the doorway was a woman—tall, with jet-black hair and eyes that seemed to glow with an unsettling light. She was dressed in dark leather armor, her movements quick and precise. Behind her, a group of armed figures poured into the room, all wearing the same black attire, their faces hidden by masks.

Rose froze, her heart hammering in her chest. Her first instinct was to move toward Sylus, but something stopped her. The woman in the doorway wasn't just a threat; she was something more. Her presence felt… familiar. It tugged at something inside Rose, as if she had seen her before, or maybe heard her voice.

But before she could place the feeling, the woman spoke, her voice cutting through the tension like a knife.

"You're more than just a pawn, Rose. You're the key. And we need you to come with us."

Rose's breath caught in her throat. Key? The word rang through her mind, but it didn't make sense. She glanced at Sylus, who stood frozen, his face pale. His jaw clenched, his fists were tight by his sides.

"What is this?" Rose demanded, stepping forward, trying to control the fear that surged within her. "Who are you? Why are you here?"

The woman's lips curled into a faint smile, but there was no warmth in it. "I'm here because you've finally reached the point of no return. You've crossed into a world you don't understand yet, Rose. But you will. And you'll be glad you did." Her eyes flicked briefly to Sylus, a strange look passing between them.

Sylus stepped forward, his body tense, his hand reaching for the gun holstered at his side. "Get out of here. Now. Or I swear, I'll—"

The woman raised a hand, her movement smooth and confident. "Sylus, you don't want to do that. Not when the stakes are so high."

For the first time, Rose saw doubt flicker in Sylus's eyes. He hesitated, his grip tightening around the gun, but he didn't draw it.

"What's going on?" Rose demanded, her voice rising. "Who are you? What do you want with me?"

The woman's eyes softened, almost sympathetically. "Rose, you were always going to be part of this. You were never just a bystander. You are the game. And the sooner you accept that, the better."

Rose's mind reeled, her thoughts a tangle of confusion and fear. The game? What does that mean?

"Enough with the cryptic bullshit," Lucas snapped from behind them, his voice sharp with frustration. "What is she talking about?"

The woman's gaze turned cold as she met Lucas's eyes. "You really don't know, do you? You're not as prepared as you think. You've been playing a game, and you didn't even know the rules."

Rose's head spun. A game? She looked at Sylus, who had gone completely still, his face unreadable.

"What's she talking about, Sylus?" Rose asked, her voice trembling despite herself. "Please, tell me the truth. What is this?"

Sylus exhaled sharply, his hands falling to his sides. The woman in the doorway didn't seem to notice his hesitation, or maybe she didn't care. She was focused entirely on Rose.

"You're not the first to be pulled into this," the woman said, stepping closer. "There have been others before you. People who thought they had control, but they never did. This world—your world—is just a fraction of what's really going on."

Rose's heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean? What world?"

Sylus's voice, low and strained, finally broke through the tension. "Rose… what she's saying isn't entirely wrong. But there's more. You were brought here for a reason, but it wasn't just to play the game. It was to survive it."

Before Rose could respond, the woman in the doorway took another step forward, her eyes locking onto Rose with an intensity that was almost palpable.

"It's not about survival anymore, Rose," the woman said, her voice cold and cutting. "It's about control. And you're going to help us take it back."

Rose's heart raced as the pieces of the puzzle began to shift in her mind. This was no longer just about survival. This was about something much bigger—and she was at the center of it.

She had always known something was wrong, but now she understood. She was caught in a game much darker and more dangerous than she could ever have imagined.
