Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Protect Him

Rose's mind raced with questions as she sat in her apartment that night. The glowing symbol she had seen earlier, the mysterious force binding her to this world—none of it made sense. She knew she had to find a way to break free, but each time she thought she had a solution, the bond between her and Sylus grew stronger, more unbreakable.

I can't let myself fall in love with him, she thought, frustration clouding her mind. But I also can't keep running from him forever. I don't want to hurt him…

The more she tried to pull away, the more she felt his presence linger, as if he were already too much a part of her. What if staying away only makes it worse? she wondered. What if it's too late to go back?

The next day, at the office, Sylus was as charismatic and persistent as always. He came to her desk in the middle of the afternoon, his gray hair gleaming in the soft light.

"Rose," he said softly, his voice warm, but there was a slight edge to it that betrayed his concern. "Are you alright? You've been distant lately."

Rose's heart clenched, but she quickly masked her emotions with a composed expression. "I'm fine, just a little tired," she said, forcing a smile. "I've been thinking about a lot of things lately."

Sylus studied her for a long moment, his intense gray eyes scanning her face. "You don't have to do this alone," he said quietly, leaning in slightly, his tone earnest. "Whatever it is, I can help."

His words hit her harder than she expected. Could he really help me? Her heart ached at the thought. The bond between them—was it truly something that could help her, or was it just a complication, a danger to both of them?

"Thank you," she replied, swallowing the lump in her throat. "But I don't want you to get hurt."

Sylus's gaze softened, and for a moment, she saw something in his eyes—something more than just care. There was a deep, unspoken understanding, as though he knew exactly what she was going through. But he didn't push her. He didn't demand anything. Instead, he simply nodded.

"If you ever change your mind," he said, his voice low, "I'll be here."

---

That night, Rose couldn't sleep. She lay in her bed, tossing and turning, her thoughts consumed by Sylus, by the bond, by the pull she felt every time she thought of him. Am I already in too deep?

Her mind kept returning to the same truth: there was no way back. If she didn't allow herself to embrace the bond, she would risk being trapped here forever, in a world she didn't belong in. But if she did give in to it, what would that mean for her and Sylus?

I have to protect him, she thought, her resolve hardening. But I can't let myself fall for him. I won't let myself get hurt.

---

The following day, Rose tried something different. Instead of pushing Sylus away, she let herself be near him. She didn't let herself fall, but she allowed herself to feel the warmth of his presence. If only for a moment, she allowed herself to imagine what it would be like to stay with him—what it would be like to let the bond grow, to see where it would lead.

Sylus noticed the change in her instantly. He could always tell when she was being more open, when she was allowing herself to show even the smallest crack in her armor. He approached her at the end of the workday, his steps light but purposeful.

"You're not pushing me away anymore," he said, a slight smile tugging at his lips.

Rose looked up at him, her heart beating faster. She couldn't deny the connection between them anymore. I won't fall for him, she thought, But I can't keep running.

"I'm not pushing you away," she said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm just… trying to figure things out."

Sylus nodded, his eyes locking onto hers. "I know," he said gently. "And I'm here to help. No matter what you decide."

Her heart swelled at his words, but she pushed the feeling down. I can't let this happen, she thought desperately. I can't love him, or I'll never be free.

---

As Rose sat by the window later that night, gazing out at the city below, she realized the painful truth: she couldn't stay in this world forever. The longer she stayed, the harder it would be to leave. And the deeper she fell into the bond with Sylus, the more she feared she would never escape.

But breaking the bond wasn't the answer. That would destroy everything—Sylus, the world, maybe even herself. There had to be another way.

Maybe it's not about breaking the bond, she thought. Maybe it's about understanding it… finding a way to live with it, without letting it control me.

But the more she thought about it, the more she realized how fragile her resolve was. Could she truly live with the bond without falling in love with Sylus? Could she protect him and herself, without losing everything in the process?

---

Sylus knocked on her door the next evening, his gray hair shining under the moonlight. When she opened it, he was standing there, his eyes soft but filled with something deeper.

"I need to know, Rose," he said, his voice low. "Do you want to stay here with me? Or do you want to leave? Because I can't keep waiting, not if you're unsure."

Rose's breath caught in her throat. This was the moment. This is where it all changes.
