Chapter 29 - Battle Manic

Yue Shiyin walked gracefully toward the main pavilion, her lavender robe flowing softly with each step. The morning sunlight filtered through the lush trees, creating patterns on the cobbled path. As she approached, she saw a gathering of about twenty inner disciples, all clad in the Spirit Affinity Sect's signature blue and white robes. Their postures radiated discipline and grace, yet an undercurrent of competitiveness lingered in their stances.

Each disciple present was a young woman, their cultivation ranging from Rank 2 middle stage to peak stage. The Spirit Affinity Sect—unlike other sects—was unique in its exclusive nurturing of female cultivators, a tradition passed down. Yue Shiyin seamlessly joined the group, her serene demeanor masking her sharp observations. She noted the subtle hierarchies among the disciples, the glances exchanged, and the quiet determination etched on their faces.

Standing at the forefront was the Sect Leader, a dignified woman nearing sixty years of age. Her hair, streaked with silver, was tied neatly into a bun, and her robe bore intricate embroidery signifying her esteemed position. Her presence alone exuded authority and wisdom. Despite her age, her Rank 5 cultivation made her a figure of respect.

Behind the Sect Leader stood ten inner elders, a mix of experienced women mostly in their forties and fifties, though a few appeared younger, in their thirties. Their expressions ranged from calm to stern, their presence reinforcing the solemnity of the occasion.

The Sect Leader stepped forward, her clear voice resonating through the pavilion. "Disciples of the Spirit Affinity Sect, today marks the beginning of an important chapter for all of you. As inner disciples, you have trained diligently and shown great promise."

The disciples listened attentively, their gazes fixed on the Sect Leader as she continued. "This generation will have its Fairy."

Murmurs rippled through the group, and Yue Shiyin's was still calm because she doesn't give a damn about being a fairy.

The Sect Leader raised her hand, silencing the murmurs. "For those who may not fully understand, let me elaborate. A Generation Fairy is the disciple who rises above all others. She will gain the unwavering support of our sect's elders, resources, and killer moves. She will represent us in the wider cultivation world."

Yue Shiyin's lips curved into a subtle smile, her thoughts hidden beneath her composed façade. She understood the stakes and she doesn't want to become a Fairy because if she becomes she will not have freedom and will be in surveillance every time.

The Sect Leader's tone grew more resolute. "You all must do mission to gain contributions points, and advancements in cultivation will determine who among you is most deserving. Now that's it dismiss, you all can go and do what you want."

As the Spirit Affinity Sect Leader said, she departed with the elders, leaving the inner disciples to themselves. Some began chatting with each other, while others quickly grouped up to discuss potential missions. Yue Shiyin, ever composed, avoided the crowd and made her way toward the Mission Tower, a tall, pagoda-style structure located on the eastern side of the sect grounds. Its elegant design featured curved roofs and intricate carvings, symbolizing the sect's history and prestige.

Upon entering the tower, Yue Shiyin was greeted by a series of circular staircases winding upwards. The tower was divided into floors, each dedicated to missions corresponding to a disciple's cultivation rank. She ascended the stairs, her steps light but purposeful, until she reached the second floor—the designated level for Rank 2 Upper Stage cultivators like herself.

The second floor buzzed with activity as other disciples sifted through mission scrolls placed neatly on wooden racks. The air carried the faint scent of incense, and the polished floors gleamed under the soft glow of spirit lanterns. Yue Shiyin approached the racks, her sharp eyes scanning the scrolls for a mission that would align with her plans. Around her, whispers floated in the air, but she paid them no mind, her focus unwavering.

"I am a Dark Path Rank 2 Peak Stage Gu Master, and I have a Master attainment in it," Yue Shiyin thought, her fingers trailing over the scrolls. "I think it is better to choose a mission related to it and advance quickly through the ranks."

Her attention was drawn to a particular scroll nestled among others. The mission—a group of Rank 1 and a Rank 2 Demonic Gu Master are harming people of a village, go and kill all of the Demonic Gu Masters. "This is good," she murmured, plucking the scroll from the rack.

As she turned to leave, a voice called out, stopping her in her tracks. "Senior Sister Yue!"

Yue Shiyin glanced back to see a young girl rushing toward her, followed by three others. The girl's eyes sparkled with eagerness as she spoke. "Can we join you on this mission? We're a group of four, and with you, we'd make a solid team. It's safer to tackle such missions together."

Yue Shiyin's expression remained calm, though her mind calculated the implications of their request. She smiled faintly, her tone polite but firm. "I appreciate your offer, but I urgently need the contribution points from this mission, so I must go alone."

The disappointment on the girl's face was evident, but she nodded, stepping back with her group. Yue Shiyin turned and handed the scroll to the attendant, officially accepting the mission. Without another word, she left the tower and headed to her room to prepare. Gathering her supplies and ensuring her Gu worms were fed completely, she set off toward the mission location.

The journey led her to a secluded area surrounded by dense forests, where the canopy above almost entirely blocked out the sunlight, leaving the terrain in a perpetual state of twilight. The air was thick with humidity, and the sound of distant rustling leaves blended with the occasional call of unseen creatures. As Yue Shiyin moved closer, she spotted the mission's target location—a small camp nestled in a clearing.

The camp consisted of two makeshift Gu houses constructed from dark wood and reinforced with iron plates. The faint glow of spirit lamps flickered through the windows, casting eerie shadows onto the surrounding ground. A few men and women, evidently Rank 1 Gu Masters, patrolled the area, their postures tense yet unrefined. Their clothing was tattered, and their faces bore the hardened expressions of those accustomed to a life of struggle.

At the center of the camp, a larger figure lay sprawled on a worn mat outside one of the Gu houses. This was the Rank 2 Gu Master, a middle-aged man with a scar running across his cheek. His breathing was steady but deep, indicating he was in a heavy sleep.

Yue Shiyin crouched low behind a thick bush at the edge of the clearing, her silver eyes scanning the camp. "Two houses, a handful of guards who are Rank 1, some mortals, I think they are people who got kidnapped from the village, and one sleeping Rank 2," she thought, her mind already calculating her approach. The mission was dangerous, but she knew she could not afford to fail.

Without wasting time planning, Yue Shiyin emerged from the bushes, her aura surging as she activated her Dark Path Gu worms. A shadowy mist began to swirl around her, shrouding her figure in an ominous haze. Her primeval essence sat at a solid 95%, giving her ample reserves to execute her killer moves. The patrolling Rank 1 Gu Masters immediately noticed her presence and raised an alarm, their shouts piercing through the stillness of the camp.

Instead of retreating, Yue Shiyin's lips curled into a manic grin. Her blood raced, and the thrill of battle filled her veins. "Let's see how much you can entertain me!" she muttered, her eyes gleaming with excitement. The first tendrils of shadow lashed out with ferocity, and the dome of artificial darkness plunged the camp into chaos. With each successful strike, the rush of adrenaline and the sight of her opponents flailing fueled her even more.

The Rank 2 Gu Master stirred awake amidst the commotion. As he rose, he unleashed bursts of flame to dispel the darkness. A stray fireball grazed Yue Shiyin's arm, singeing her sleeve and leaving a shallow burn. She paused for a moment, staring at the wound, before breaking into a laugh. " hahaha. This is what makes it fun!" she exclaimed, her voice tinged with exhilaration. The pain only spurred her on, making her wanting to fight more.

The Rank 2's attacks grew fiercer, forcing Yue Shiyin to dodge and weave, her robes billowing as she moved. Her primeval essence began to dwindle with each counterattack, dropping to 75% as she reactivated her Shadow Tendril Gu. The flame strikes were powerful, yet they could not extinguish her relentless assault. When a particularly close blast sent her tumbling, she rose with a grin, the burn marks on her robes a badge of honor rather than a deterrent.

As the battle raged on, Yue Shiyin's unorthodox tactics and sheer tenacity began to wear down the Rank 2 Gu Master. She unleashed her Dark clones Gu, sending sending a copies of herself scattering across the battlefield. When the Rank 2 roared in frustration and obliterated several of the mirages, Yue Shiyin darted forward with a piercing attack, landing a significant blow that drained her essence to 55%.

The Rank 2, bloodied but not defeated, launched one final desperate barrage of flame strikes. Yue Shiyin dodged most of them but deliberately allowed a glancing hit on her side. The sharp sting brought a twisted smile to her face. "Is that all you've got?" she taunted, her voice dripping with exhilaration.

Gathering the last of her strength, she activated Dark Oblivion Gu. The shadows coalesced into a massive blast, engulfing her opponent in a tide of darkness. When the dust settled, the Rank 2 Gu Master lay motionless, subdued at last.

Panting and exhilarated, Yue Shiyin surveyed the battlefield. Her essence reserves had dwindled to 35%, but her spirits were anything but low. The thrill of battle and the sight of her defeated foes fueled her satisfaction. "This was so fun, even though I am just a mortal now, to fight against strong people is so fun," she murmured and laughed to herself, wiping the blood from her lips.

As Yue Shiyin approached the mortals of the nearby village, their fearful expressions betrayed their terror. To them, she must have seemed like a devil—her robe tattered, blood splattered across her arms and face, and her smile, though soft and genuine, only seemed to intensify their unease. She raised her hands gently to calm them, speaking in a soothing tone. "You're safe now. Return to your village," she said, her voice steady and reassuring.

Despite their fear towards Yue Shiyin, the mortals obeyed, glancing back nervously as they retreated to the safety of their homes. Yue Shiyin watched them go, the thrill of battle still coursing through her veins. She shook her head with a small laugh, brushing off their fear. "Mortals will always be so fragile," she murmured to herself before turning back toward the sect.

Upon returning, she submitted the mission to the sect's attendant. Her reward was fifty contribution points, a satisfying addition to her already accumulated 200 points. With 250 points now at her disposal, she realized she could finally afford a Rank 2 Gu.
