Ryer's pov
*.*.*
The class was quiet, with the only sounds being the pit patter of the rain hitting the roof and the scratching of pens and pencils against paper. I sat staring out the window with my cheek resting on my left hand, a pencil idly twirling in my right.
The raindrops raced each other down the glass, their gentle rythm hypnotic.
I stared at them, paying no mind to the quiz I was supposed to be doing right now. My mind was elsewhere. It was running with thoughts about the party Erik was holding at his place later on tonight. His folks were out of town, and we took this opportunity to have it at his.
I couldn't wait to see Jenny or what she was gonna wear tonight, a ghost of a smile formed on my face at the thought. I couldn't wait to see her reaction on what I was gonna wear tonight. My gaze focused on a figure outside the window. Due to the rain blurring my view, I couldn't tell who it was, but I could tell the person was running towards the school building.
"Mr Ryer." The teacher called out, I could feel her heated gaze on me, but I paid no mind.I didn't bother answering her or even looking up at her. I huffed, drawing my attention to my quiz scribbling doodles aimlessly. I knew I would get in trouble for this, but meh, I couldn't care less.
A few moments later, there was a quiet knock on the door before it opened, revealing a severely drenched boy. His dark hair stuck to his face, and his clothes clung to his skin. Water droplets dripped from his hair onto his face. He had brown skin, and from here, I could tell it was quite smooth. His brown eyes held a slight red tint underneath, whether from the constant irritation of the smoke from his cigarettes that he smoked most of the time or maybe it was the lack of sleep. He looked plainly at Ms Gills, apologizing for being tardy.. She glared at him before releasing a long sigh...
I couldn't tell how upset he might be about it, but I definitely saw his body tense and his jaw clench at the mention of detention. His brows furrowed ever so slightly as he tried to reason with Ms Gills, who paid him no mind, sending him off to his seat at the back of the class, a detention slip in his hands...
I could feel the waves of anger rolling off him as he passed by my desk disappearing out of my gaze. I looked at the clock, and it read a quarter past eight, but this wasn't something new. No, it was an occurrence that happened too often til Mr Brown left, and we got Ms Gills as a substitute. Jose was known for being late on multiple occasions, but they were always brushed off by Mr Brown, but not anymore now that Ms. Gills was here.
I shared one class with Jose, and that was literature.. Other than that, he was just a rare face in the crowded halls. Someone who didn't talk much.He was quiet and kept to himself. He made my curiosity bubble, but I've never really bothered to approach him. Why? I had no idea.
I could hear whispers already about why he was late to class. people forming their own scenarios and jumping to conclusions. I turned a bit in my seat, sparing a glance at the drenched boy who was practically shivering, his face stoic and his palms clenched. Eyes focused on his hands as he ignored the attention he was getting. I look away quickly once his eyes lift and meet mine, focusing on the quiz for the rest of the class. Like I should have been doing in the first place.
Class dragged on without any more disruptions, and the moment the bell rang, Jacobs was out faster than I could say fiddlesticks.
I make my way to my locker, shoving what I didn't need anymore before heading to the restroom. I push the rickety door, and it makes a squeaking sound as I slide in. I set my bag on the sink and splash my face with water sighing. My phone vibrated in my pockets, and I dug it out. It was a text from Jenny. My eyes meet my reflection, and I smile, splashing more cold water onto my face.
There was a noise, a voice cursing relentlessly, Jose came out of one of the stalls at the far corner of the restroom. He didn't spare me a glance, his hair was still damp and his clothes soaked but now the hoodie he had come in with earlier was draped over his shoulder and he was in a plain t-shirt that clung to his chest showing how slightly toned it was beneath.
Jose stood in front of the mirror, eyes glazed over. He looked worlds away, just staring blankly at the sink. Then he sneezed. It was a quick, soft sound that took both of us by surprise. I looked up at him through the mirror, and our eyes met again for the second time today before he glanced down, and his cheeks deepened to a rich, warm brown.
The first sneeze was followed by a couple more, each one making his face grow a little darker. He groaned, rubbing his temples, a long sigh leaving his lips. He braced himself against the sink, his eyes closed for a moment, and when they opened again, I could see the faintest hint of a glow still lingering on his skin. Was he embarrassed? It was kinda cute, though.
He washed his hands under the running water, the frown on his face getting deeper as he scrubbed at the imaginary dirt on his fingers.
It was stupid. I knew it was stupid, but I still reached into my bag without stopping to think for a moment about how he would react. I felt the soft fabric brush against my skin before I pulled the clothes out, tossing him the fit I had planned on wearing to Erik's party tonight. "Here." I said, causing him to look at me with narrowed eyes as they almost landed on his head before he swiftly caught them.
"You're gonna catch a cold if you keep those on. I, umm, suggest you change out of them."I say, pretending to look for something in my bag to avoid any more eye contact with him.
He didn't say anything to me, and for a moment, he just stood there before he slowly walked back to the stall, shaking his head on the way before he paused."uhm, uh...."his voice came out rough before he cleared his throat and tried again."Uh, thanks."
"You're welcome."I say, simply scratching the back of my neck even though his back was still turned to me.
He doesn't say anything else as he walks into the stall, and I hear a click on the door. I exhaled a breath I didn't realize I was holding, zipping my bag and exiting the restroom.. Guess what they said about him was true after all.. he really didn't talk much.
And now I was gonna have to go over to Erik's like this then, but I guess it wasn't that bad. I looked down at my current clothes, they weren't anything special but they would have to do for today.
Besides, I was happy I was able to help Jacobs out, but I had no intentions of stopping by my place later on today. I really didn't want to stop there, not today at least.
