Chapter 2 - A Mysterious Pendant

Alex's thoughts lingered on the bizarre happenings of the night before as morning slowly made its appearance in the little settlement. His dreams had been darker ever since he discovered the necklace, with visions of dilapidated castles and eerie voices resonating along old corridors. The emotion was too strong and genuine to ignore, even though he had assumed it may be the echoes of the ancient forest that surrounded the orphanage.

Alex gripped the pendant firmly, feeling the cool metal against his skin. It was a modest necklace, a circle of silver engraved with a strangely familiar tree. The tree's branches twisted and intertwined as if concealing secrets, giving the impression that it had memories of its own.

Alex visited Raven, an experienced burglar he had just met, and inspected the necklace with a mixture of fear and interest. That pendant isn't just any trinket, you know. Her voice was barely above a whisper when she said, "I've seen symbols like that before."

Alex looked at her intently. Raven was a mystery, and something in her gaze suggested that she understood the unknown, even if he was still suspicious of her intentions.

Then tell me. He held up the pendant between them and said, "What do you know about this?" Raven sighed, and her eyes hardened.

According to rumors, this sign is associated with a lost line, the last generation of Eldoria's monarchs. Both magic and blood bind the pendant to them. I'm not sure how you obtained it, but if I were you, I would keep it near.

"Linked by blood?" As Alex considered what she had said, his pulse raced. He had always felt unique and distinct in some way, but he never imagined that he could be a part of something so big and strong.

She gave a nod. "Look, there are powers in this world that will stop at nothing to conceal that pendant, forces that are more old and terrible than you can understand. They see it as a danger and a reminder of a history they would want to forget.

A peculiar sense of resolution and anxiety settled over Alex as his hands clenched around the pendant. "What does that signify for me, then?"

With an intensity he had never seen before, Raven's eyes locked with his. "Alex, that indicates that you are marked. Whoever is looking for that pendant will find you.

Alex felt as if the pendant had increased in weight overnight as they got ready to leave the settlement. As he and Raven went by, the locals' eyes darted anxiously, whispering. They seemed to be able to detect something that was hiding just below the surface.

"Alex, do you think that fate exists?" As they made their way out of town down the winding route, Raven questioned.

Unsure of how to respond, he shrugged. "I'm not sure. The majority of my life has been devoted to just surviving. I never gave destiny any consideration.

Raven laughed, but it was a laugh devoid of humor. "I didn't either. Sometimes, however, it seems like things are aligning in ways that are impossible to ignore. That pendant is a component of a larger whole. And you are now as well.

Alex's mind was buzzing with questions as they continued to speak in quiet. The scenery started to change as they got further from the settlement. The branches of the higher trees twisted into gnarled patterns, creating odd shadows on the ground. The woodland was filled with the distant howls of wolves as the temperature dropped.

After many hours, Raven abruptly halted as they came to the edge of a thick grove, her hand extending to keep Alex back. With her eyes focused on somewhere far away, she said, "Wait."

An old stone marker stood in front of them, just barely discernible through the fog. The marker's emblem, a tree with twisted branches that were partially obscured by darkness, was identical to the one on Alex's necklace.

He muttered, "That's impossible," as he moved toward the marker. "How is this possible?"

Raven narrowed her eyes and peered around. "This location is quite old. Senior to all of us. No matter who you are or who your family is, they have an unfathomable bond with this place.

Alex was about to answer when they heard a little rustling noise. Raven's posture was ready and stiff as her hand moved to her dagger.

A hooded guy with a scar on his face suddenly stepped out of the darkness. His eyes were dark and full of recognition as he glanced at Alex.

The guy stated in a harsh, icy voice, "I've been looking for you." "You ought not to have arrived here."

With the pendant pressing on his chest like a stone, Alex stepped back. The man's look was a combination of dread and rage as he stared at it.

"Are you unaware of what you're carrying?" The guy scoffed. "That pendant represents a lost legacy that only results in death for those who pursue it."

With her blade shining in her palm, Raven took a step forward. "Who are you? And with him, what do you want?

The guy turned to face her, a threatening smirk twisting his lips. "Names are irrelevant. The fact that the kid is accompanying me is what counts.

The guy attacked before Alex could respond, and Raven sprang to stop him. They collided, and she was surprised by the man's power as he shoved her back. As they struggled, Alex stared in disbelief, not knowing what to do. Even though he felt powerless, a fire that he couldn't describe sparked within him.

The pendant suddenly started to shine, emitting a faint silvery light as if it were being pulled by an unseen force. The guy halted, staring at it in terror, his eyes widening.

"No, it can't be," he said as he retreated. His face contorted in terror, he gave Alex one last look. "Dude, this isn't over. Nothing, not even that pendant, will rescue you when they come for you.

He then vanished into the darkness, leaving Raven and Alex alone in the quiet woodland. Raven's gaze was inscrutable as she glanced at Alex.

"We must relocate. She grabbed his arm and drew him forward, saying, "Now." "Alex, you don't comprehend how much is on the line here. You must comprehend the meaning of that necklace if you want to live.

Alex's mind was racing with questions as they ventured more into the jungle. Although he had always been aware of his uniqueness, this was something he hadn't expected. He was a member of a past cloaked in peril and secrets, a lost heritage.

"Now what do we do?" His question was hardly audible above a whisper.

A rare glimmer of empathy appeared on Raven's face as her eyes softened. "Alex, we uncover answers. We learn about your identity and the implications of this curse for you and all others associated with that throne.

The burden of their task weighed hard on Alex's shoulders as they traveled in solitude. He had the impression that he was perched on the precipice of something enormous, something that may alter not just his life but also Eldoria's destiny.

Additionally, Alex couldn't get rid of the sensation that he was being watched and that dark eyes were tracking his every move as the woodland grew closer to them. His one connection to a life he had never experienced, the necklace, pulsed against his breast, a quiet warning of the perils that awaited him.

The murmurs echoed in his thoughts, growing louder with every stride. He felt as if the ghosts of his history were beckoning him to confront the shadows of his ancestry and recover what had been lost.
