Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Forest

Leo and Amber stood frozen as the mysterious tribe surrounded them, swords gleaming in the faint light filtering through the forest canopy. Their attackers spoke in a guttural language neither of them could understand, their voices echoing ominously.

Amber tightened her grip on her sword, her eyes darting to Leo. "You've got a plan, right?"

Leo's mind raced. "I'll distract them. You run."

Amber glared at him. "Not a chance. There are too many. I'll fight with you."

Before Leo could protest, the tribe advanced. Amber moved first, her blade flashing as she cut down one attacker, then another. Her strikes were precise, her movements swift, but the numbers were overwhelming. She managed to take down five of them before their leader barked an order.

The archers stepped forward, raising their bows.

"Arrows!" Amber shouted, dragging Leo behind her as the first volley was unleashed. They barely managed to avoid the deadly projectiles, scrambling behind a fallen tree for cover.

"We're outnumbered," Leo muttered, panic creeping into his voice.

Amber panted, blood dripping from a shallow cut on her arm. "Then we go down fighting."

Before they could act, agonized screams erupted around them. The air was suddenly heavy with tension, and one by one, the tribe members collapsed to the ground, writhing in pain before going eerily still.

Amber cautiously stepped out from cover and knelt beside one of the bodies, checking for a pulse. "They're... dead." Her voice trembled.

Leo looked around, his heart pounding. "How? What happened?"

Amber shook her head. "I don't know. There's no wounds, no signs of a fight. They just… died."

Leo's eyes scanned the forest. It was too quiet now, the usual sounds of rustling leaves and distant creatures replaced by a suffocating silence. "We need to move. Now."

Amber nodded, and they cautiously stepped away from the scene. As they walked deeper into the forest, the weight of what had just happened pressed down on them.

Then Leo froze.

"What is it?" Amber whispered, gripping her sword.

Leo pointed to a shadowy figure perched high on a tree branch, its form barely visible against the dappled sunlight. The figure was cloaked, its face obscured, but its posture exuded a chilling confidence.

Amber gasped, her instincts telling her to ready her weapon, but the figure didn't move to attack. Instead, it tilted its head, as if studying them, and then smiled.

The smile wasn't kind. It was predatory.

Meanwhile, in the Crimson Kingdom, the grand castle at the heart of the land buzzed with tension. King Davlin, a man with a powerful presence and sharp eyes, sat at the head of a massive table surrounded by his nine commanders.

The room was thick with discussion, but Davlin's focus was unwavering. He turned to one of his commanders, a burly man clad in black armor. "Where is he? He should've been here by now."

The commander bowed. "My King, we've sent word, but he hasn't arrived. I'll dispatch more men to locate him."

Davlin's fingers drummed against the table. "He's succeeded in his mission. He has what we need. I want him here. Now."

Another commander, a woman with a stern expression, spoke up. "It's impressive he completed the task alone. Perhaps he has a plan of his own. He's never failed you before, my King."

Davlin's gaze hardened. "As long as he doesn't betray us."

"I'll take responsibility," the woman said. "I'll send my best spies to track him."

Davlin nodded, his expression unreadable. "See to it."

Back in the Aether Kingdom, the grand library was quiet, its endless shelves of books illuminated by flickering lanterns. Deep within, Lisa slid a hidden bookshelf aside, revealing a secret door.

With a torch in hand, she stepped into a dark tunnel that stretched far beneath the city. Her heart raced as she ventured deeper, the sound of her footsteps echoing against the stone walls.

Meanwhile, in the royal palace, the King of Aether Kingdom had summoned his commanders. They stood in tense silence as he addressed them.

"Have you found any trace of the thief?" the King demanded.

The commanders shook their heads in disappointment.

The King slammed his fist onto the table, his frustration boiling over. "The Aether Core has been stolen! And you expect me to sit idly while this kingdom falls apart?"

After hours of fruitless discussion, the meeting ended. The King retreated to his private chambers, only to find Lisa waiting for him.

"Lisa? What are you doing here?"

Lisa bowed slightly. "Father, I'm here because Leo has left. He's determined to find the thief."

The King's eyes widened in shock. "He left? And you let him go?"

Lisa's voice trembled. "I tried to stop him, but his words... they were the same as my late brother's. I couldn't stop him."

The King's expression softened, sadness clouding his face. "So he's just like his father."

Lisa wiped away her tears. "Father, why do you keep Leo so far from the city? Why make me watch over him?"

The King sighed deeply. "Because I fear what will happen if they find him. If they awaken and take him, this world will plunge into chaos again. The monsters, the darkness… everything we fought to seal away will return. I've kept him hidden for humanity's sake."

Lisa's eyes filled with understanding, but her heart ached. "I'll continue to watch over him, Father."

The King nodded. "I'll send spies to protect him. He's too important, not just to this kingdom, but to the world."

Back in the forest, Leo and Amber continued moving, but the eerie feeling of being watched persisted. The shadowy figure followed from a distance, always just out of reach.

"Whoever it is, they're toying with us," Amber muttered.

Leo's jaw tightened. "Then let's make them show themselves."

Before Amber could respond, the figure disappeared. A chilling laugh echoed through the trees, sending shivers down their spines.

"Leo," Amber whispered, her voice shaking. "What are we dealing with?"

Leo stared into the darkness. "I don't know. But it's not over yet."
