Chereads / Reqiuem: The System Call / Chapter 10 - The Cost of Leadership

Chapter 10 - The Cost of Leadership

The massive stone doors swung open, their ominous creaking reverberating throughout the vast dungeon. The group cautiously advanced, keeping close to one another. Beyond the threshold lay an expansive hall, its towering walls fading into darkness above, while the floor was strewn with icy crystals that shimmered with an ethereal luminescence.

As the last hunter stepped over the threshold, the doors slammed shut behind them with a deafening thud, sealing them in a heavy silence. Instantly, torches affixed along the walls flared to life, bathing the chamber in a cold, bluish glow.

Oh Hyo Joo (the archer, with a note of anxiety): "Is this… the boss chamber?"

Kang Seung Joon (grimly): "Seems like it."

Everyone stood frozen, eyes darting around the chamber, nerves tense and senses heightened. At the center of the vast room rose an imposing frozen throne, towering beneath a ceiling adorned with immense, glistening icicles. And most striking of all was the creature that sat upon the throne.

The entity was colossal, standing well over three meters in height, with a form encased in an armor of thick ice that glimmered eerily in the flickering torchlight. Its eyes, deep blue and fierce, bore into the hunters with a malevolent intensity. In one massive hand, it held a gigantic ice hammer, while shards of ice hovered menacingly around its head.

Mi Ra (in a hushed voice): "The Ice Boss…"

Her voice quivered with tension. The creature rose from its throne, each ponderous step accompanied by a heavy thud that echoed like cracking ice. It moved to the center of the chamber, regarding the group with a cold, calculating gaze.

Kang Seung Joon: "We have no choice. We need to take it down."

Lee Chan Min (bitterly): "With a leader like Mi Ra, this should be a piece of cake!"

Mi Ra shot him a steely glare, her fists clenching involuntarily.

Mi Ra (firmly): "We have a plan. And I believe in us."

The hunters assumed their battle positions, muscles tense in anticipation. The tanks moved to the vanguard, archers and the healer staying to the rear. Hyun Woo stood next to Mi Ra, gripping the hilt of his sword with white knuckles, his heart pounding a chaotic rhythm in his chest.

The Ice Boss struck first. It brought its hammer crashing down onto the ground, sending a flurry of sharp ice shards scattering across the chamber. Kang Seung Joon managed to shield the group with his large shield, though the force of the impact forced him back a few paces.

Kang Seung Joon (shouting): "Forward! Attack!"

The hunters surged forward into battle. Lee Chan Min and Hyun Woo moved to flank the Boss, attempting to divert its attention, while Mi Ra began chanting spells to enhance the defensive and offensive capabilities of the frontliners. The archers let loose a volley of arrows, only for them to shatter upon impact with the monster's ice-reinforced armor.

The Boss let out a guttural roar, swinging its hammer in a wide arc. The strike connected with Kang Seung Joon, sending him hurtling across the chamber. His shield cracked under the pressure, and he struggled to rise, his breathing labored.

Mi Ra (yelling): "Healer! To Seung Joon! Now!"

The healer sprinted towards the fallen tank, but just as she neared him, the Boss turned its icy glare towards her, preparing to strike. Hyun Woo, recognizing the imminent threat, darted forward, his blade slicing at the creature's leg to draw its attention. The monster turned, bringing its hammer down with a force that cracked the ground. Hyun Woo narrowly evaded the blow, though he was thrown off balance by the shockwave.

The battle pressed on, each hunter pushed beyond their limits. The Ice Boss was more formidable than any of them had anticipated. One of the archers fell, struck fatally by an ice shard hurled with terrifying precision. The healer attempted to reach him, but it was too late.

Mi Ra (with a desperate edge to her voice): "Don't give up! We're almost there!"

Lee Chan Min, despite multiple injuries, continued his assault, coordinating strikes with Hyun Woo to maintain a relentless offense. Kang Seung Joon, bruised and battered, his shield barely holding together, once more threw himself towards the Boss, taking yet another punishing blow to create an opening for his comrades.

Finally, after an arduous joint effort, Hyun Woo landed the finishing blow, driving his blade deep into the creature's chest. The Ice Boss let out a final deafening roar as its body began to splinter, until, with a shattering crash, it crumbled into countless fragments of ice, collapsing to the chamber floor.

A profound silence filled the room. The hunters stood, gasping for air, barely managing to stay upright. Mi Ra sank slowly to her knees, clutching her side where her armor was stained dark with blood. Kang Seung Joon remained on his feet, though he leaned heavily against his cracked shield, his face contorted in pain.

Oh Hyo Joo (softly, tears in her eyes): "We did it…"

Despite their exhaustion and the weight of their losses, a faint smile began to form on the hunters' faces, expressions of weary relief. The ice crystals that had fallen from the Boss glowed brilliantly—far more than they had hoped for. The reward was substantial, their efforts rewarded doubly.

Kang Seung Joon: "We made it out alive. That's what matters."

Yet, their brief moment of joy was quickly interrupted. The doors through which they had entered remained firmly sealed. From the depths of the chamber, a low, resonating rumble began to emanate. The hunters turned their heads, alarm etched across their faces.

Oh Hyo Joo: "What… What is that?"

Behind the throne of the Ice Boss, a new set of doors began to open, revealing a dark passage that led further into the unknown.

Mi Ra (with a tired but determined smile): "Looks like this isn't over yet…"

Mi Ra, staggering from exhaustion, managed to rise to her feet. Her gaze reflected turmoil — anxiety and pain — but her voice remained steady. She knew her team needed her leadership now more than ever.

Mi Ra: "Healers, tend to the wounded immediately! Those still standing, secure the perimeter. We cannot afford to be caught off guard."

Her voice was resolute, but beneath that façade, she fought against the tide of rising panic. Despite their fatigue, the hunters obeyed without hesitation. The healers rushed to the wounded, their hands trembling but precise, channeling restorative magic with focused urgency.

Mi Ra scanned the surviving members, assessing their conditions. Her heart sank as she counted only ten. Fifteen had entered this chamber. Her breath quickened, panic rising in her throat and tightening around her chest.

Mi Ra (voice breaking slightly): "Five... Where are the five?"

She desperately scanned the vast chamber, hoping to spot the missing. But that hope dissipated as her eyes landed on the lifeless forms scattered across the stone floor.

The first body she noticed was pinned against the wall by an enormous ice crystal. His face was frozen in a mask of terror, blood from the wound having crystallized grotesquely along the jagged ice. Mi Ra approached, but it was clear there was nothing to be done.

Her gaze moved to another form—crushed beneath immense shards of ice. The features were obscured, buried beneath the weight of the frozen rubble.

Mi Ra (in a hushed, trembling voice): "No..."

Further along the ground lay a third body, brutalized by a monstrous strike — half cleaved apart, a dark pool congealing around him. Mi Ra turned her head, nausea threatening to overwhelm her.

She searched for the fourth hunter, but he was nowhere to be found—only scraps of cloth, mingled with shattered ice, provided any evidence of his existence.

When Mi Ra reached the far side of the chamber, her heart clenched painfully. Lee Chan Min sat slumped against the wall, his face drained of color, eyes half-lidded. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth, and his body had been reduced to a ghastly state—both arms were missing, his right leg severed below the knee. Blood pooled around him, soaking into the cold stone.

Mi Ra (voice trembling): "Chan Min..."

She dropped to her knees beside him, her face taut as she struggled to mask her fear. He looked up at her slowly, a faint smile curling on his lips as though he wanted to reassure her.

Lee Chan Min (struggling to speak): "Leader... you... did well... We did... it."

His voice was frail, scarcely more than a whisper. Mi Ra clenched her fists, tears welling up in her eyes.

Mi Ra: "No... No, it's not over yet. You're going to make it. Do you hear me? You have to live!"

She signaled for one of the healers, who hurried over and knelt beside Lee Chan Min. The healer worked frantically to stanch the bleeding, but his expression spoke volumes: the injuries were beyond saving.

Healer (softly): "Mi Ra... There's not enough time."

Mi Ra tensed, turning her head to shield her tears from the others. She fought against the rising urge to scream in helpless fury.

Lee Chan Min, knowing his end was near, looked at Mi Ra one last time.

Lee Chan Min: "You... are the best... leader, Mi Ra. Please... protect them..."

His head drooped, and his breathing ceased. Mi Ra remained still, staring, unable to comprehend that her friend was truly gone.

The chamber fell into a suffocating silence. The remaining hunters, realizing Lee Chan Min had passed, lowered their heads in respect. Even the most exhausted among them stood upright, acknowledging the loss of not just a comrade, but a friend.

Mi Ra slowly rose to her feet. Her face no longer bore signs of fear or hesitation. She turned to the remaining hunters, her breath steadying.

Mi Ra (steadily): "We cannot stop. We must move forward."

A rumble echoed throughout the chamber, drawing everyone's attention to the boss's lair. Behind the massive throne, stone doors slowly opened, revealing yet another part of the dungeon. A cold breeze drifted from the passage beyond, carrying an ominous sense of foreboding.

Kang Seung Joon (wearily): "What is this? Wasn't the boss chamber supposed to be the end?"

Mi Ra (resolutely): "It seems it's not over yet. We keep moving."

Her voice carried a strength that resonated throughout the room, steeling the others. The hunters exchanged glances, weary but resolute. Slowly, they began to gather themselves, preparing for whatever lay ahead.
