Chapter 2 - First meeting

It was a crisp autumn afternoon, and Sophie had just stepped out of the small cafe, clutching a bag of freshly bought groceries. The streets were bustling with people making their way to various destinations, while the rustling of leaves in the breeze added to the quiet hum of the city. Sophie was lost in thought, her mind distracted by the day's events.

Suddenly, her peace was shattered by the loud sound of shouting and scuffling. Ahead, on the quiet side street, a man in simple, worn clothes was holding another man by the collar, beating him. Sophie froze for a moment, unsure of what to do. The aggression in the air made her heart race, and for a brief second, she thought about walking away. But something inside her—perhaps the sense of justice—urged her forward.

As Sophie rushed toward the scene, hoping to stop the violence, the man in the simple clothes suddenly turned to face her, his angry eyes narrowing. His grip on the other man remained firm. Sophie's voice faltered slightly, but she managed to shout, "Hey, stop! You can't do this!"

The man stared at her for a moment, his eyes blazing with frustration and irritation. Without saying a word, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a badge, flashing it in front of her face.

"I'm an officer," he said coldly, his voice sharp and unwavering. "This doesn't concern you."

Sophie froze, the confusion and humiliation washing over her in waves. She had thought she was intervening in a criminal act, but now, facing his unbothered demeanor and the badge, her confidence crumbled.

The officer noticed her hesitation and, with a flick of his wrist, tucked the badge back into his coat. He didn't offer any further explanation, but his tone was dismissive. "Just walk away, lady. There's nothing for you here."

Humiliated, Sophie instinctively raised her shopping bag and held it up to her face, hiding her flushed cheeks and trying to make sense of the situation. The officer didn't speak again. He simply turned his attention back to the man he had been beating, and with a single, forceful motion, pushed him away. The victim, now bruised and dazed, stumbled but managed to get to his feet and hurried off down the street.

The officer didn't glance back at her, not even once. He simply walked away, disappearing into the crowd as if nothing had happened.

She took a deep breath, lowered the bag from her face, and continued walking down the street, the bustling city once again surrounding her, but this time, a little colder than before.

She stood there for a moment, her heart still racing, as she tried to process what had just happened. She had tried to do the right thing, but in the end, she felt invisible—just another person dismissed by someone who seemed to hold power without care.

As Sophie stood frozen, still recovering from the humiliation of being brushed off by the police officer, she began to walk away. Her thoughts were a jumbled mess, trying to make sense of everything that had just happened. But as she took a few steps, she suddenly realized something—her purse was missing.

Panic rose within her chest as she realized the last place she had seen it was just moments before, when she had raised it to hide her face in front of the officer. She turned toward the place where he had confronted her—the police officer—who was now nowhere.

The loss of her purse—her identification, her money, her memories—was nothing compared to the overwhelming feeling of being powerless.
