Chapter 13 - Chapter 2.7 : "8 mile"

The two youngs were left standing there, the man still trying to unsuccessfully calm his wife down as she wife continued to give a hateful glare at Jimmy.

Jimmy looked back at Cheruma, looking slightly calmer but still clearly angry.

__Jimmy: "You okay, Cher?"

Cheruma looked up at him, and gave a small nod.

__Cheruma: "I'm fine. It's nothing I haven't dealt with before…"

She had a look of slight disappointment on her face, looking slightly hurt at the memory of the woman's comment.

Jimmy felt a small pang of guilt at seeing the disappointment on her face.

He let out a sigh and ran a hand through his hair.

__Jimmy: "Sorry you had to hear that, Cher. I just can't stand being around people like that who think that they're so superior simply because of something stupid like skin color…"

Cheruma gave a slight shrug, trying to look alright.

__Cheruma: " The fact that you stood up for me is enough."

She smiled slightly and continued.

__Cheruma: "And you shouldn't have to apologize. You don't control what others say and think...let's just grab what I need."

Jimmy gave an agreement nod, calming down more from the whole situation.

__Jimmy: "Alright. We'll just get what you need and get out of here, alright."

He looked back at the still angry couple and muttered under his breath, "And away from these assholes…"

The rest of the shopping trip was spent in an uncomfortable silence. Although Cheruma tried to keep a straight face and act alright, Jimmy could tell the woman's remarks were eating at her a bit. On the other hand, Jimmy was also in deep thought, still trying to cool down from the woman's racist comments.

Although there was no conversation between the two, Jimmy couldn't help but occasionally glance down at Cheruma. He could see the slightly hurt look on her face, as she still seemed to be thinking about what the woman said.

Throughout most of the trip, he fought the urge to say something to Cheruma, feeling guilty that she had to deal with racist people like that.

Eventually he gave in and spoke up.

__Jimmy: "Cher…"

Cheruma looked up at him, having been pulled out of her own thoughts about the couple they saw. She had a slightly surprised look on her face.

__Cheruma: "Yes?"

Still feeling guilty about her having to put up with that woman, Jimmy looked down at her.

__Jimmy: "Listen, don't listen to that woman. She's just an old hag with no manners. Her opinion of you doesn't matter. You know that, right?"

Cheruma gave a small nod, trying to hide the fact that the woman's words had gotten to her.

__Cheruma: "I know, I know, I shouldn't pay attention to it. I'm fine, I promise."

She gave a small smile, trying to look okay.

Her attempt at looking okay was convincing but not perfect. Jimmy could tell that she was still a bit upset by the woman's comments, even though she was trying to not show it.

He didn't press any further, deciding it'd be better to change the subject of the conversation.

The trip to the trailer park went by in silence, no conversation being held between them. After a couple minutes, the arrived at the trailer park.

Jimmy was slightly worried about Cheruma, and glanced down at her, noticing the slight distant look on her face.

__Jimmy: "Are you sure you're alright Cher? Those people didn't get to you, did they?" he asked softly.

__Cheruma: "I'm fine. Thank you for accompanied me... I'll go."

Jimmy was worried about her, not buying that she was perfectly fine. He was about to say something else, but held it back, knowing Cheruma wasn't going to talk more about it.

He just gave a small nod, and said:

__Jimmy: "Alright, if you're sure you're alright. Anytime, Cher."

Cheruma gave a small smile, but Jimmy could still tell something was bothering her.

As she prepared to walk into her trailer, Jimmy suddenly called out her name.

__Jimmy: "Cher, wait..."
