The unpleasant smell of smoke filled Scarlett's lungs as she struggled to sit up, her body aching from the explosion's impact. The night sky, once dotted with stars, was now clouded by thick plumes of smoke. Around her, were sound of gunfire.
Nathan's voice pierced through the ringing in her ears, calling her name with a desperation that made her heart ache. She tried to move, her fingers clawing at the dirt as she forced her body to respond.
"Nathan," she muttered, her voice, barely audible over the noise.
Moments later, strong arms wrapped around her, pulling her into a protective embrace. Nathan's face was etched with fear, his eyes scanning her for injuries.
"I thought I lost you," he whispered, his voice breaking.
"You didn't," she managed, clutching his arm.
"We need to get out of here. we're not safe yet."
