Chapter 1 - Chapter One: The Edge of Change

Miles was deep in sleep having an amazing dream, He found himself at prom, surrounded by friends and bright lights. Everyone was cheering for him because he had just been named prom king. He felt like he was on top of the world and his heart was filled with joy.

Across the dance floor, he spotted a girl he had huge crush on. She was beautiful with sparkling eyes and had a bright smile, they danced together, the music swirling around them. It felt like the moment ever, and he could hardly believe his luck.

As they swayed to the music, he leaned in closer, ready to kiss her. Just as their lips were about to touch, he suddenly heard a voice calling his name. "Miles! Miles! Miles!" at first it sounded like the girl, but then it changed getting deeper and deeper and deeper and more familiar. To his horror he realized it was his dads voice.

Confused, he looked at the girl, her face began to twist and change. Before he knew it , she was gone and his dad was staring at him. He woke up in shock.

"Damn…. I was about to kiss my Dad. Ewww…" he said with disgust.

Suddenly he was lost in thought on how beautiful the girl was and how he felt at that moment. I wish she was real; I wish it was all real. a wide smile spread across his face as he thought about the dream he had just woken up from. He had met the most beautiful girl, her laughter echoing in his mind. She wore a warm smile that lit up the entire room. The memory of their dance, the way she looked at him, made his heart flutter. It felt so real, and he couldn't help but feel a rush of happiness just thinking about her.

"Wake up miles, get prepared its time for school, its past 7, get your ass up and get prepared. You can't be late on your first day. Are you up???" Jeff said knocking at his room door. " I'm up Dad" said Miles heading to the bathroom to have his bath.

Water poured down Miles's head as he stood in the shower, his mind still lost in the dreamy thoughts of the beautiful girl he had met in his dream. but just as he was basking in those warm memories, the image of his dad's face suddenly flashed before him, ruining the moment. It was the same unsettling twist that had jolted him awake earlier. With a startled gasp, he shook his head to clear it, the dream quickly slipping away like steam in the air.

Feeling a mix of embarrassment and urgency, he turned off the shower and hurried out of the bathroom. He needed to focus on the day ahead, not on bizarre dreams. As he wrapped a towel around himself, he couldn't shake the odd combination of feelings. Maybe it was time to step into reality and leave those strange dreams behind.

Miles stood in front of the mirror, nervously adjusting his shirt. Today was his first day of high school, and everything felt new and overwhelming. They had just moved from Los Angeles to New York City, and the change was huge. Gone were the sunny beaches and familiar faces; now he was surrounded by towering skyscrapers and bustling streets.

"I'm ready, Dad," Miles said as he sat at the dining table, pouring cereal into his bowl. "Here you go," his dad replied, handing him the milk. New York is a lovely city, I'm pretty sure you'll love it here.

"I think so I had a good energy about my school this morning."

What do you mean by good energy you haven't even been there before today will be your first time" replied his Dad.

"Don't worry about that Dad..." said Miles smiling suspiciously

As he stepped outside, the sounds of the city greeted him: honking cars, chattering pedestrians, and the distant rumble of a subway train. The air was filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety. Miles took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. He had always dreamed of living in a big city, but now that he was here, he felt a little lost.

Walking to his new school, he couldn't help but notice the vibrant energy around him. Street performers played music, vendors shouted about their delicious food, and people rushed by, each with their own stories. It was all so different from the laid-back vibe of L.A.

When he arrived at the school, it was even bigger than he had imagined. Students milled around the entrance, chatting and laughing. Miles felt a pang of nervousness as he stepped through the doors. Will I fit in? will I make new friends? He said to himself thinking about his former school in LA and all his friends over there.

He grabbed his schedule, scanning the list of classes with a mix of excitement and dread. His first class was history, and he hoped he wouldn't be the only new kid or the only black kid in the room. As he walked down the crowded hallways, he caught glimpses of laughter and friendships already forming, and he wished he could be part of that.

Taking a deep breath, he pushed open the door to his first class. The room buzzed with chatter, and all eyes turned to him. He felt a flush of heat creep up his cheeks as he settled into his seat, he caught the eye of a girl with bright red hair and a warm smile. She gave him a friendly wave, and he felt a spark of hope. Maybe this new adventure wouldn't be so bad after all. As the teacher started the lesson, Miles couldn't shake the feeling that today was the beginning of something exciting.

He quickly took a quick glance of everyone in the class and found out he is the only black kid in the room, while it was a bit surprising he didn't think that will be a problem to him. Starting afresh he said quietly to himself.

Hey new kid, I'm Jason... turning to his left was a Mexican looking kid smiling and stretching his right hand towards Miles for a hand shake... Miles pause for a while, yes he was eager to make friends but not this fast and probably not him… I'm Miles nice meeting you Jason said Miles extending his hands to receive the hand shake little did he know this will be a beginning of an amazing friendship.

"I will be honored to show you around the school after the class",

"that's very thoughtful of you" Miles said with a half smile.

The class was done and Jason began the tour as he had promised.

As they walked through the lively halls, Jason glanced at the Miles, eager to make a connection.

"Seriously, don't stress about it. I was a total mess on my first day! I accidentally walked into the wrong classroom and ended up staying till it was over, it was long and boring.

Miles chuckled, the tension easing slightly.

"Yeah, I can see how that would be awkward!"

Diego nodded, then pointed to a large poster on the wall.

"Speaking of awkward, check out the 'Welcome Week' activities! There's a game night this Friday in the auditorium. They'll have board games, video games, and even some snacks. It's a fun way to break the ice, and I'll be there. You should definitely come!"

They stopped outside the cafeteria, the scent of pizza wafting through the doors.

"Alright, this is the cafeteria—home of the infamous pizza and mystery meat Mondays. But honestly, the pizza is pretty good. I usually sit with my friends over there by the window. We joke that it has the best view of the drama unfolding on the lawn!"

Jason led the way inside, navigating the lunch crowd with ease.

As Miles walked toward the table, his gaze accidentally locked with a girl sitting across from him. She looked strikingly similar to the girl he dreamt about—a vivid, captivating vision that lingered in his mind. He found himself unable to take his eyes away from her; it was as if an invisible force was drawing him closer.

No matter how hard he tried to look away, her beauty was simply too mesmerizing. Her features were soft yet striking, and the way she laughed with her friends sent a rush through his chest. Then, to his surprise, she glanced his way and flashed him a small, inviting smile. In that moment, his heart raced, and a wave of nervousness washed over him.

He felt a blush creeping up his cheeks, and he was acutely aware of how silly he must look, standing there frozen in awe. Thoughts raced through his mind, should he smile back? Should he say something? But all he could do was stand there, captivated, as a mix of excitement and apprehension swirled within him. The moment felt electric, and he couldn't shake the feeling that this encounter was somehow significant.
