Chapter 86 - The Stage

With Temoshí now face-to-face with Aurelio, the Gamemaster himself, the ominous ticking of a phantom clock reverberated through the dome, blending with the faint sounds of a spinning wheel echoing somewhere unseen. The atmosphere buzzed with tension, each second a sharp reminder of the danger looming.

From the balcony above, stairs began to form, shimmering into existence as if conjured by sheer will. Each step solidified in mid-air, gleaming with a metallic sheen. Slowly, Aurelio descended, his movements deliberate, his long coat trailing behind him like the curtain of a closing act. His gloved hands casually flicked a set of cards between his fingers, the motion smooth and hypnotic.

"Ah, at last, dear captain, the moment we've all been waiting for," Aurelio began, his voice smooth and theatrical, carrying a dangerous undertone. He stopped mid-staircase, arms spreading wide as if addressing an audience only he could see. "Allow me to properly introduce myself now that we stand on the same stage. I am Aurelio, the Gamemaster. The architect of fate, the sovereign of chance, and the unchallenged ruler of Casinova Island."

He descended another step, his crimson eyes gleaming under the dim lights. "Perhaps you've heard my name whispered in fear, or maybe my legend was drowned out in the chaos of your reckless adventures. But here, in my grand theater of luck and misfortune, I am no mere tale. I am the puppeteer pulling the strings of fortune, the conductor of every roll of the dice, every turn of the wheel. My mastery over luck transcends the mundane."

He continued, his voice growing darker, sharper. "This island you see, this sanctuary of fortune and ruin, it's not just my kingdom—it is my masterpiece. Every spin of the roulette, every flip of the card, is a thread in the tapestry of my design. I control the highs and lows, the triumphs and tragedies. And you, my dear captain, have stumbled right into my web."

Reaching the final step, Aurelio stopped, his towering figure framed by the glowing neon flora surrounding them. He let the cards fan out in his hand, flicking one into the air. It spun lazily before bursting into a small flash of light. "You may wield fire and daring, but in my world, the rules are mine to write. Luck isn't just a game, Captain Temoshí—it's my weapon, my art, my law. And you, well... you're just another piece on my board."

Temoshí stood in tense silence, his gaze fixed on Aurelio. His irritation grew with every word the Gamemaster spoke, every smug flourish of his cards, every self-assured gesture. It was as if the very air around Aurelio was saturated with the arrogance of someone who believed himself untouchable.

Finally, Temoshí spoke, his voice sharp and cutting through the atmosphere like a blade. "I've heard enough of your rambling for one day. Seriously, shut it already and give your mouth a break." He took a step forward, his eyes narrowing with a mix of frustration and determination. "Whoever—or whatever—you think you are, I don't care. You're just another obstacle, one more loudmouth who thinks he's bigger than he actually is."

He cracked his knuckles, his tone growing colder. "I don't have time for your 'games' or your warped sense of leadership over this island. All I see is a place broken under your so-called rule. If you think Casinova belongs to you, you're delusional. This island deserves better than the mess you've turned it into."

Temoshí took another step forward, flames flickering faintly at his fingertips, a reflection of his growing determination. "So here's how it's gonna go, Aurelio. Either you face me here and now, or I'll tear through whatever contraptions or tricks you've got left until there's nothing standing between me and the end of this nightmare." He paused, his expression fierce. "Your luck games end today."

Aurelio grinned, snapping his fingers with a theatrical flourish. "Then let's set the stage!"

Suddenly, the entire dome shuddered as gears and mechanical contraptions hidden within its structure whirred to life. The walls around them began to shift, the lush greenery folding away like paper as enormous panels slid into place. Within moments, the serene nature scene was completely transformed into a dazzling arena, a chaotic wonderland of games and challenges. Slot machines lined the edges, their reels spinning with unnatural speed. Dice as tall as a man rolled across the floor, glowing faintly with eerie luminescence. Card symbols—spades, hearts, clubs, and diamonds—lit up the walls like neon signs, pulsating to the rhythm of a faint ticking sound that filled the air.

Above them, the glass dome split open like the petals of a mechanical flower. Fireworks shot up into the air, painting the night sky in brilliant bursts of red, gold, and blue. As the sparks rained down, a massive screen descended from the heavens, its sheer size casting a shadow over the entire arena. The screen flickered to life, displaying Aurelio's face in vivid detail. But it wasn't just for those in the dome—cameras spread throughout Casinova Island transmitted the scene to every corner, broadcasting the battle to an audience of onlookers.

"People of Casinova!" Aurelio's voice boomed, amplified by unseen speakers. "Behold the climax of the greatest game you'll ever witness! The Phoenix Pirates' captain faces the Gamemaster himself, here in my domain! Witness as luck decides the victor!"

The audience watching through the screens erupted into cheers and gasps, their voices carried faintly to the dome.

Temoshí glanced around, his sharp eyes taking in every detail of the transformed battlefield. His fists clenched as he saw the intricate traps and mechanisms hidden within the arena—a spinning roulette in the center, rows of sharp spikes retracting and extending along the floor, and a massive pendulum swinging ominously above.

"You really went all out with this, didn't you?" Temoshí muttered, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

Aurelio laughed from his balcony, arms wide open as he reveled in the spectacle. "Oh, this is only the beginning, dear captain. Every step you take, every move you make, the game of luck will dictate your fate. Will you rise as a legend, or fall as just another player who lost it all? Let's see if fortune favors you... or betrays you."

Temoshí's flames ignited at his sides, casting an orange glow on his determined face. "Bring it on, Aurelio."

The arena lights dimmed, leaving the roulette wheel glowing in the center. The ticking sound grew louder, echoing ominously as the stage was set for their final confrontation.

Under the glow of the enormous screen projecting the transformed arena, the reactions were far from dull.

Yumiko, Kyora, and Aurora halted mid-step on their path to the clock tower, the flickering broadcast pulling their attention. Yumiko's eyes narrowed as she tightened her grip on her sword. "That idiot! Of course, he's already throwing himself into something crazy. Why does he always have to act like the hero?"

Kyora crossed her arms, her tone laced with sarcasm. "Oh, I don't know, maybe because he thinks he's invincible? Let's hope he doesn't trip over his own flames this time."

Aurora, keeping pace beside them, spoke with calm resolve. "You both know Temoshí. He doesn't leap into danger without a plan... usually. But we need to move faster if we want to help him."

Yumiko sighed, rolling her shoulders. "Fine. But if he burns down the island before we get there, I'm throwing him off the ship."

Meanwhile, deep in the bowels of the grand theater, Nathaniel stood unwavering, his pistol aimed directly at Yipsiv. The faint tremor of the broadcast vibrated through the walls, but his focus didn't falter. Behind him, Tarot clung to the bars of his cage, squinting at the faintly visible screen.

"You seein' this, Nate? Captain's puttin' on a heck of a performance. Think he needs a co-star?" Yipsiv's tone was light, but there was an edge of comedy beneath it.

Nathaniel didn't look back, his voice calm but firm. "We've got our own act to finish first. Focus on what's before you, Yipsiv. Not about the captain's dramatics."

Tarot grinned, tapping one of the bars with his finger. "You'd think someone with my talents wouldn't get caught in a contraption like this. Guess even the mighty Tarot can't always win the hand, huh? No, but seriously, help me."

Nathaniel sighed faintly. "Just don't. He's counting on us too."

Meanwhile...

Joker adjusted his jester hat, his mechanical joints emitting faint whirring sounds as he ran beside Elliott through the dark streets. They flanked Lira, a determined young woman with sharp eyes that darted around, scanning for any potential threats. The trio moved cautiously, their path illuminated by the neon glow of Casinova Island's vibrant nightlife. The distant cheers and fireworks from Aurelio's announcement painted a chaotic backdrop to their journey.

"So, Lira," Joker began, his voice tinged with mischief, "what's your angle in all this? You seem like the type who's got more going on than you're letting on."

Lira shot him a glare but smirked slightly. "You could say I'm here for a bit of justice—and maybe a little revenge. Aurelio's reign has ruined too many lives, and I'm not one to sit back and watch."

Elliott, fiddling with a coin in his hand, chimed in, "Yeah, well, you're walking with a bunch of misfits now. What's your plan when we catch up to him? You got some hidden power or secret weapon we should know about?"

Lira shrugged, her pace steady. "Nothing fancy. Just a sharp eye, a steady hand, and enough grit to see this through. Besides, I've got you lot, don't I?"

Joker let out a metallic chuckle, his eyes flashing. "Oh, darling, if it's chaos and theatrics you're after, you've definitely teamed up with the right crowd."
