Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: Bimpe’s Discovery

The days following Omolola's confrontation with Adekunle were turbulent. He had been careful to maintain his charm in public, but the tension between them was palpable. Omolola's family, unaware of the storm brewing beneath the surface, continued to praise Adekunle, and her isolation deepened. But Omolola knew she was not alone—Bimpe was her steadfast ally, and together, they were determined to expose Adekunle's lies.

Uncovering More Clues

One afternoon, Omolola sat with Bimpe in her apartment. The room was filled with the sound of rustling papers and the occasional clack of Bimpe's laptop keyboard as they poured over everything they could find about Adekunle.

"This guy is like a ghost," Bimpe muttered, scrolling through pages of search results. "No substantial social media presence, no clear business affiliations, and nothing about his past before he showed up in Lagos."

"That's what makes him so dangerous," Omolola said, her voice tinged with frustration. "He's hiding something, and it's big."

Bimpe frowned and leaned back in her chair. "There's one thing we haven't done yet—contact Chike directly."

Omolola hesitated. "Do you think he'll talk to us?"

"If Adekunle owes him money, he might," Bimpe said. "People with grudges are often willing to spill secrets."

After some deliberation, they decided to reach out to Chike through a mutual connection Bimpe had found. Within hours, they had a phone call scheduled.

Chike Speaks

When Chike's gravelly voice came through the speaker, Omolola and Bimpe listened intently.

"You want to know about Adekunle?" he asked, his tone wary.

"Yes," Omolola said. "We know he's up to something, but we need proof. What can you tell us?"

Chike sighed. "Adekunle is a con artist, plain and simple. He targets families with influence and money, gets close to them, and then uses their connections to cover his tracks."

Omolola felt a chill run down her spine. "What does he want from my family?"

"Your father's political influence," Chike said bluntly. "He's been trying to secure a major business deal, and your father's connections could seal it for him. Once he gets what he wants, he'll disappear—and leave you to pick up the pieces."

"Why hasn't anyone exposed him before?" Bimpe asked.

"Because he's smart," Chike replied. "He never leaves a trail. But I have some records—emails and financial transactions—that might help you. I'll send them to you."

As the call ended, Omolola felt a mixture of relief and dread. They finally had tangible evidence, but confronting Adekunle would be dangerous.

A Growing Threat

Later that evening, Omolola received a call from Adekunle.

"I feel like something's changed between us," he said, his voice laced with feigned concern. "Are you still upset about the misunderstanding we had?"

Omolola's grip on the phone tightened. "It's not a misunderstanding, Adekunle. And I don't trust you."

He chuckled lightly, though there was an edge to it. "That's a shame, Omolola. I thought we were building something special."

"You're the only one who thinks that," she snapped.

His tone darkened. "Be careful, Omolola. You don't want to make an enemy out of me."

The threat was subtle but unmistakable. As the call ended, Omolola's hands shook. She knew she had to act quickly.

The Evidence Comes to Light

The next day, Bimpe received the promised documents from Chike. They included bank statements showing transfers from wealthy families to accounts linked to Adekunle, as well as emails detailing his schemes.

"This is it," Bimpe said, spreading the papers across the table. "This is the proof we need to take him down."

Omolola studied the documents, her anger mounting. "We have to show this to my parents. They need to see who they're dealing with."

But Bimpe looked hesitant. "Do you think they'll believe you? Adekunle has them wrapped around his finger."

"I don't care," Omolola said firmly. "They need to know the truth."

The Confrontation

That evening, Omolola gathered her parents in the living room. Adekunle was notably absent, having claimed to be "busy with work," but Omolola suspected he was avoiding her.

"Mama, Papa, I need to talk to you," she began, holding the stack of documents tightly.

Her mother frowned. "What is it now, Omolola? More complaints about Adekunle?"

"It's not a complaint," Omolola said. "It's the truth."

She laid the documents on the table and began explaining everything—Chike's testimony, the evidence of Adekunle's financial schemes, and his true intentions.

Her father's face darkened as he flipped through the papers. "Where did you get this?"

"Does it matter?" Omolola asked. "The point is, Adekunle isn't who he says he is. He's using us."

Her mother shook her head. "This can't be true. Adekunle is a good man. He loves you."

"No, Mama," Omolola said, her voice breaking. "He doesn't. He's been lying to us from the beginning."

Her father sighed heavily. "This is serious, Omolola. If what you're saying is true, we've been played for fools."

"I'm not lying," she said. "Please, believe me."

Her father nodded slowly, but her mother still looked unconvinced.

Adekunle's Reaction

The next morning, Adekunle arrived at the house, his usual confidence intact. But when he saw the grim expressions on Omolola's parents' faces, his charm faltered.

"What's going on?" he asked, feigning ignorance.

"We know the truth," Omolola's father said, holding up the documents. "Care to explain this?"

Adekunle's eyes flicked to Omolola, and for a moment, his mask slipped. But he quickly recovered, shaking his head with a laugh. "This is absurd. Omolola, are you so desperate to ruin what we have that you'd fabricate evidence against me?"

"I didn't fabricate anything," she said coldly. "And you know it."

Her father stood, his expression stern. "Adekunle, I trusted you. I welcomed you into my family. But now I see that was a mistake."

Adekunle's smile faded completely. "You're making a big mistake, sir. You don't want to cross me."

"That sounds like a threat," her father said. "And it only proves what my daughter has been saying all along."

Adekunle glared at Omolola. "You'll regret this."

The Aftermath

After Adekunle stormed out, Omolola felt a weight lift from her shoulders. But the battle was far from over.

"You did the right thing," Bimpe said later that day. "But be careful. Guys like Adekunle don't go down without a fight."

"I know," Omolola said. "But at least my family is starting to see the truth."

For the first time in weeks, Omolola felt a glimmer of hope. She had exposed Adekunle's lies and reclaimed some control over her life. But she knew the road ahead would be fraught with challenges, and she was prepared to face them head-on.

The cracks in Adekunle's facade were now wide open, and Omolola was determined to ensure he never harmed anyone else again.
