Kael stepped out of his chamber, into the crisp night air. The castle's battlements loomed above, casting long shadows across the courtyard. Torches flickered, casting a warm glow over the assembled knights.
As Kael descended the stairs, his eyes scanned the gathering. Familiar faces, yet strangers to his current plight. They spoke in hushed tones, their words laced with concern and suspicion.
"Kael, we've received reports of dark creatures lurking in the nearby villages," Captain Ryker said, approaching him. "We need your expertise to investigate."
Kael hesitated, unsure if he was ready to face the darkness outside. But something within him stirred, a spark of determination.
"I'll leave immediately," he said, his voice firm.
As he turned to depart, a figure emerged from the shadows. A woman with piercing green eyes and raven-black hair, clad in dark leather armor.
"Wait, Kael Darkhaven," she said, her voice husky. "I've been searching for you."
Kael's hand instinctively went to his sword. "Who are you?"
"My name is Eira Shadowfire," she replied, her gaze locked on his. "I've come to offer my assistance. You're not the only one haunted by darkness."
Kael's instincts screamed caution, yet something about Eira drew him in.
"What makes you think I need help?" he asked, his tone guarded.
Eira smiled, a hint of mischief dancing in her eyes. "Let's just say I have... sources. You're running out of time, Kael. The darkness within you will consume everything if you don't act soon."
Kael's grip on his sword tightened. How did she know?
"What do you propose?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Eira stepped closer, her voice taking on a conspiratorial tone. "I know of a sage, Arin the Wise. He possesses knowledge of the ancient lore, and perhaps, a cure for your curse."
Kael's heart quickened. A cure?
"Tell me more," he said, his eyes locked on Eira's.
