Chapter 87 - Chapter 87

I sit at my workstation, pondering the possibilities for my next simulation project. The gifts from Caliban - the energy shield bracelet and the shadow manipulation crystal - have sparked my imagination, and I'm eager to explore how I can incorporate them into something truly unique.

Just then, Jake enters my workspace. "Sam, do you have a minute?" he asks, his expression slightly hesitant.

I look up from my thoughts. "Of course, Jake. What's on your mind?"

"Well, I was hoping to request a personal day today, if that's alright with you." He pauses, a hint of nervousness in his voice. "It's my sister Emi's birthday, and I'd like to go buy her a present."

I nod, understanding the importance of family. "That's no problem at all, Jake. In fact, why don't you let me tag along? I'd be happy to help you pick out the perfect gift for Emi."

Jake's eyes widen slightly. "Really? You don't mind?"

"Not at all," I assure him. "Consider it part of my job as your charge. I could use a break from staring at these screens, and it'll be nice to get out of the office for a bit."

A grateful smile spreads across Jake's face. "Thank you, Sam. I really appreciate it."

We make our way to the bustling Jade City mall, the sounds of lively chatter and the scent of street food filling the air. As we stroll past the various shops, I turn to Jake. "So, what kind of thing does Emi like? Any ideas on what we should look for?"

Jake pauses, his brow furrowing in thought. "Well, Emi's really into fantasy and adventure stories. She loves reading novels about brave heroes and magical quests."

I nod, picturing a young girl with a thirst for imagination. "Hmm, maybe we could find her a new book series or a collector's edition of one of her favorites?"

"That's a great idea!" Jake's face lights up. "She's been wanting to read this new series called 'The Enchanted Realms.' I bet she'd be over the moon to get the complete set."

"Then that's what we'll look for," I say, already scanning the storefronts for a bookshop. "Lead the way, Jake. I'm happy to help you find the perfect gift for your sister."

I walk alongside Jake through the bustling Jade City mall, keeping an eye out for a bookstore that might have the fantasy series he mentioned. The energy of the crowd is palpable, with people bustling to and fro, laughter and chatter filling the air.

"Ah, there's the shop!" Jake exclaims, pointing to a cozy-looking store with towering shelves of books lining the walls. We head inside, the scent of paper and ink instantly enveloping us.

"Excuse me," Jake says to the clerk, "do you happen to have the complete set of 'The Enchanted Realms' series?"

The clerk nods and leads us to a display showcasing the collection. "Right this way. These just came in last week and are selling like hotcakes."

I examine the beautifully illustrated covers, imagining the worlds of magic and adventure that await within. "These look perfect, Jake. I'm sure your sister will love them."

Jake's face lights up with a grateful smile. "Thank you, Sam. This means a lot to me."

We make the purchase, and as we exit the store, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement for Emi. To be able to dive into such captivating stories at her age must be a true delight.

"Alright, I think we have everything we need," Jake says, clutching the wrapped gift. "Let's head to my place and celebrate Emi's birthday!"

I nod in agreement, and we make our way to the car, the anticipation of the party palpable. As we pull out of the parking lot, I glance over at Jake, who seems more relaxed than I've ever seen him.

Suddenly, a deafening explosion shatters the air, and the car lurches violently. My heart races as the world spins, and I grip the door handle as we careen off the road. The car flips, and everything goes black.

I groan as consciousness slowly returns, my head pounding from the impact. "Jake?" I croak, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Sam! Thank goodness you're awake," Jake's voice calls out, muffled and strained. "We need to get out of here. Can you move?"

Gunshots ring out, the sharp cracks sending a jolt of adrenaline through me. I blink, trying to clear my vision, and find myself crouched behind the overturned car. Jake is beside me, his expression tense as he scans our surroundings.

"What happened?" I ask, my mind still reeling.

"I'm not sure, but we're under attack," Jake replies tersely. "We need to find cover and call for backup."

I nod, wincing as a wave of dizziness washes over me. Steadying myself, I peek out from behind the car, trying to get a sense of our situation. The mall parking lot is in chaos, people running and screaming as more shots are fired.

"Stay down," Jake orders, pulling me back behind the car. He checks his firearm, his brow furrowed in concentration.

I can feel my heart pounding in my chest as the gravity of the situation sinks in. We're trapped, under attack, and I have no idea who or what is targeting us. My mind races, trying to make sense of it all.

"Jake, what do we do?" I ask, hating the tremor in my voice.

"We need to get to safety," he replies, his gaze fixed on the chaos unfolding around us. "I'll create a diversion, and you run for the nearest building. Can you do that?"

I nod, even though the thought of leaving Jake behind fills me with dread. "But what about you?"

"Don't worry about me," Jake says, a determined glint in his eye. "I'll be right behind you. Now, get ready."

Before I can protest, Jake springs up from our cover, firing a barrage of shots towards the unseen attackers. I seize the opportunity, my legs pumping as I sprint towards the nearest storefront, my heart pounding in my ears.

Gunfire erupts behind me, and I can't help but glance back, my breath catching in my throat as I see Jake engaged in a fierce battle. He's holding his own, but I can see the strain on his face.

I reach the store, quickly pulling the door open and diving inside, slamming it shut behind me. The sound of the chaos outside is muffled, and I take a moment to catch my breath, my mind racing with a thousand questions.

Where are we? Who's attacking us? And most importantly, is Jake going to be okay?

I grip the door handle, torn between staying put and going back to help my friend. But before I can make a decision, a voice calls out from the shadows, sending a chill down my spine.

"Well, well, look who we have here."

I spin around at the sound of the unfamiliar voice, my heart pounding in my chest. A tall, imposing figure emerges from the shadows, his gaze fixed on me with a predatory intensity.

"Who are you?" I demand, my voice quavering slightly.

The man doesn't answer, instead taking a step towards me. I instinctively reach for the gun at my side, but before I can even draw it, he lunges forward, his movements lightning-fast.

I barely have time to react as he grabs me by the collar, slamming me against the wall. The impact knocks the wind out of me, and I struggle to catch my breath.

"I don't have time for chit-chat," the man growls, his grip tightening around my throat. "You're coming with me."

I try to break free, lashing out with my fists, but he easily deflects my blows. His strength is overwhelming, and I realize with growing panic that I'm no match for him.

"Let me go!" I shout, my voice strained.

The man's response is to tighten his grip even further, cutting off my air supply. Spots dance in my vision as I desperately claw at his hands, my lungs burning.

"Sorry, kid," he says, his voice devoid of any emotion. "This is nothing personal."

With a swift motion, he brings his fist down, connecting with the side of my head. The world spins, and I feel my consciousness slipping away as the pain explodes through my skull.

I try to fight back, to stay awake, but the darkness is overwhelming. As I feel myself being dragged away, my last thoughts are of Jake, wondering if he is safe.

The blackness consumes me, and I succumb to the crushing weight of oblivion.
