Chapter 69 - 68: one step

The staircase spiraled upward, endless and suffocating, roots twisting and coiling as if alive, mocking every step Aiden took. The crimson glow of the Core pulsed from above, bathing everything in a haunting, otherworldly light. Shadows danced around them, their forms shifting between bat-like creatures and predatory birds with jagged wings and razor-sharp talons.

Aiden's breathing was heavy, his steps frantic. He conjured a shield of flickering light and shadow, blocking a talon that came dangerously close to his throat. With a flick of his wrist, the construct morphed into a chain, binding the creature before disintegrating it into dark wisps. He barely had time to recover before another shadow dove at him.

Lila's voice cut through the chaos, calm and commanding. "Aiden, focus on me!" she called, her dark sword cleaving through a flock of bat-like shadows. The blade seemed to drink the darkness, growing sharper with each strike. "Stay close, and trust me. I'll get us to the top."

Aiden nodded without hesitation, his Ring of Vows glowing faintly as he conjured a spear of intertwining light and shadow. He hurled it at a diving shadow bird, dispersing it into fragments of darkness. "I'm with you!" he shouted back, his voice strained but determined.

Lila turned her head slightly, a faint smile on her lips. "Good. One step at a time, Aiden. Don't look up, don't think about how far we've got to go. Just follow me."

Her words wrapped around him like a lullaby, steadying the frantic beat of his heart. He locked his gaze on her back, her figure cutting a path through the chaos. Each step she took seemed deliberate, effortless, as though she belonged in this nightmare.

But no matter how hard they climbed, the top of the staircase remained a distant, unreachable goal. The shadows came in relentless waves, their screeches piercing the air. Aiden's constructs shifted rapidly—a barrier to block talons, a whip to lash at the creatures, bursts of light to blind their pursuers. Yet the futility gnawed at him.

"Why aren't we getting anywhere?" he growled, frustration boiling over as he lashed out at another shadow.

Lila turned to him, her expression serene despite the chaos around them. "You're too tense," she said softly. "You're fighting the staircase, Aiden. Stop trying to conquer it. Just trust me."

Her hand reached out, brushing against his arm. Her touch was cool, grounding. "Look at me," she said, her voice dropping to a soothing murmur. "Don't think about the shadows. Don't think about the climb. Just take each step with me."

Aiden hesitated, his frustration warring with the unshakable conviction in her tone. He exhaled shakily, nodding. "Alright. One step at a time."

"That's it," Lila said, her smile widening. "Keep your eyes on me. We will be there soon enough."

The shadows thinned as Aiden's movements slowed, his steps deliberate. The oppressive weight of the climb began to lift, though his chest still burned with exertion. Lila's voice was a constant presence, guiding him forward, steadying his resolve.

At last, the roots leveled out, depositing them onto a flat platform. The air here was eerily still, the crimson glow of the Core casting long shadows that seemed to stretch endlessly into the horizon. Before them lay the mire, its surface unnervingly calm, reflecting the Core's defiled light like a pool of blood.

Aiden wiped the sweat from his brow, his gaze fixed on the mire. "Is this it?" he asked, his voice hoarse. "The inner sanctum?"

"We're close," Lila replied, stepping forward. Her voice was quiet, almost reverent. "You've done so well, Aiden. Just a little farther now."

Aiden's chest tightened at her words, the faintest whisper of doubt flickering in his mind. But her presence was magnetic, her tone soothing. He followed her without question as she stepped onto the mire's edge.

"This place…" he began, but Lila cut him off.

"Don't think about it," she said, her voice gentle but firm. "Just focus on me. You're the only one who can end this. You're the one who can save everyone."

"Save everyone?" he echoed, his steps faltering slightly. The mire rippled beneath his boots, but Lila's steady pace urged him forward.

She turned to him, her dark eyes locking onto his. "You've seen what the Core has done. You've seen how it twists everything. And Sylva… she's part of it. She's lying too you, Aiden. She always has."

Aiden frowned, uncertainty flickering in his gaze. "Sylva—she's trying to stop the Core. She's—"

"She's the other half of the problem," Lila interrupted, her tone sharp yet laced with sorrow. "She's a piece of the Core, she doesn't want too stop it. If you kill her, you'll weaken the core. Do that.... well, you'll have what you need to destroy the Core once and for all."

Her words were like honey, sweet and persuasive, yet they left a bitter taste in the back of Aiden's mind. The faint whisper of Sylva's voice echoed once more, static and distant.

"Aiden… are you there?"

He shook his head, gripping the Ring of Vows tightly. "I don't know if I can do that."

"You can," Lila said, stepping closer. Her hand cupped his cheek, her touch warm despite the cold logic in her gaze. "You're stronger than you think. You've already come so far."

The ground trembled beneath their feet, a low, guttural rumble that sent ripples across the still mire. Aiden's gaze snapped forward as a massive figure emerged from the shadows, stepping onto their path.

The Sentinel.

He stood tall and imposing, his fractured armor glowing faintly with dark energy. His shadowy blade shimmered with lethal intent, the red glow of the Core illuminating his jagged form. His crimson eyes locked onto Aiden, a mixture of fury and sorrow radiating from his presence.

"Aiden," the Sentinel rumbled, his voice deep and resonant. "You've followed her far enough."

Lila's expression hardened, her hand tightening on her dark sword. "Stand aside," she said coldly. "or else."

The Sentinel's gaze shifted to her, his tone laced with contempt. "You've led him to ruin, just as intended."

Aiden stepped forward, his Ring of Vows flaring to life as a blade of intertwining light and shadow formed in his hand. His voice was steady, though doubt flickered in his eyes. "If you're here to stop me, I won't back down."

The Sentinel raised his weapon, the air around him crackling with raw energy. "You've seen what lies ahead," he said, his tone heavy with finality. "Turn back now, or lose everything."

The mire rippled, the tension thick enough to cut with a blade. Aiden tightened his grip on his construct, his heart pounding as he faced the towering figure. Behind him, Lila's voice was a whisper in his ear, soft and insistent.

"He's protecting them, Aiden. Don't let him stop us."

But in the back of his mind, Sylva's whisper echoed louder than before, cutting through the haze of doubt.

"Aiden… please."

Aiden's gaze locked onto the Sentinel, his resolve wavering as the shadows of Lila and the Core loom behind him.
