Chapter 40 - Chapter 39: The Eye of the Abyss

The temple's silence was deafening, broken only by the faint hum of the black sphere Jin Shang had touched. The air shimmered with an invisible force, and the walls seemed to pulse with life, responding to the ancient power now coursing through Jin.

Kaelros and Lysander stood at a distance, watching him warily. Jin's Abyssal Core, already a source of awe and unease, now burned brighter, its presence overwhelming.

"What did you do?" Kaelros demanded, his tone sharp but edged with concern.

Jin turned slowly, his eyes no longer just dark—they were pools of shifting shadow, as if the Abyss itself stared through him. "I didn't just touch the Abyss. I saw it. I understood it."

Lysander's hand tightened around his blade. "And what does that mean for us?"

Jin stepped away from the sphere, his movements deliberate. "It means I know what the Celestials fear. And why they'll stop at nothing to destroy me."

---

The Abyssal Truth

Jin explained what he had seen in the vision granted by the sphere: a memory of the cosmos before order and chaos split into opposing forces. The Abyss was not inherently evil—it was the primordial source, the wellspring of all creation. But when the Celestial Council sought to impose their will on the universe, they sealed away the Abyss, branding it as a corruptive force.

"They're not just afraid of me because of my power," Jin said, his voice low. "They're afraid of what I represent—a return to the balance they destroyed."

Kaelros crossed his arms, his expression unreadable. "And you think wielding the Abyss will bring that balance back?"

"It's not about balance," Jin replied. "It's about freedom. The Celestials want to control everything, and the Abyss is the one thing they can't tame."

Lysander frowned, his usual humor absent. "You make it sound noble, but you've felt what the Abyss does to you. It's not just power—it's hunger. If you're not careful, it'll consume you."

Jin met his gaze. "That's why I need to master it. Not just for me, but for everyone who's ever been crushed under the weight of their rule."

A New Foe Arrives

Before the conversation could continue, the ground beneath them trembled. The temple's ancient walls groaned, and cracks spiderwebbed across the stone floor. A surge of energy erupted outside, lighting the sky with a blinding glow.

"They've found us," Kaelros muttered, summoning his elemental energy as the group rushed outside.

Descending from the heavens was a host of Celestial warriors, their armor gleaming with divine light. Leading them was a figure unlike any Jin had seen before—a towering woman clad in armor that shimmered like molten gold. Her wings spread wide, radiating an aura so powerful it made the air around her crackle.

The woman's voice echoed across the mountain. "Jin Shang. You've defiled a sacred place and stolen power that was never meant for you. In the name of the Celestial Council, I sentence you to oblivion."

Kaelros's eyes widened. "That's Themis, the Arbiter of Balance. She's one of the Council's strongest enforcers."

Jin stepped forward, his Abyssal energy flaring. "If they think they can scare me into submission, they're wrong."

Themis raised her hand, and the Celestial warriors charged, their weapons blazing with radiant energy.

The Battle of the Summit

The fight erupted with violent intensity. Kaelros summoned torrents of wind and fire, creating barriers to slow the advancing warriors. Lysander darted between enemies with surgical precision, his blade a blur of silver light. Jin faced Themis directly, their clash of energies shaking the very mountain.

"You're playing with forces you can't comprehend," Themis said, her strikes fast and unrelenting. "The Abyss will destroy you, just as it has destroyed countless others."

Jin deflected her attacks, each clash sending waves of dark and radiant energy into the air. "Maybe it will. But I'd rather be destroyed fighting for freedom than live under your chains."

Themis's eyes narrowed, her wings folding inward as she channeled a devastating burst of energy. The attack struck Jin, driving him back, but he absorbed the force with his Abyssal Core, the dark energy growing stronger in response.

"You've underestimated me," Jin growled, unleashing a wave of Abyssal power that forced Themis to retreat.

A Strategic Retreat

Despite their strength, the group was overwhelmed by the sheer number of Celestial warriors. Kaelros and Lysander fought valiantly, but even they could see the tide turning against them.

"We can't win this," Kaelros shouted, his elemental energy flickering. "Not here."

Jin clenched his fists, his gaze locked on Themis. "We're not running."

Kaelros stepped in front of him, his tone firm. "This isn't about pride. If you die here, everything you're fighting for dies with you."

Jin hesitated, his Abyssal Core burning with defiance. But as Themis prepared another attack, he realized Kaelros was right. They needed time—time to unlock the full potential of the Abyss and to prepare for the battles ahead.

"Fine," Jin said through gritted teeth. "But this isn't over."

Kaelros nodded, summoning a whirlwind that enveloped the group. The winds carried them away from the summit, the Celestial warriors unable to follow.

The Calm Before the Next Storm

The group landed in a secluded forest miles away, the adrenaline of battle still coursing through their veins. Kaelros collapsed to one knee, his energy spent, while Lysander scanned the surroundings for any signs of pursuit.

Jin stared at the sky, his thoughts racing. Themis had been powerful—far more than he had anticipated. And if she was only one of the Council's enforcers, the battles ahead would be even more grueling.

Kaelros broke the silence. "You saw what she was capable of. If we're going to win, you'll need more than raw power. You'll need strategy."

Lysander nodded, his usual levity returning. "And maybe a few more allies. Three against the heavens isn't exactly great odds."

Jin's expression hardened. "Then we'll find allies. We'll gather anyone who's suffered under the Celestials' rule. And we'll make them regret ever trying to control us."

As the night deepened, the group rested, the weight of their mission heavy on their shoulders. Far away, in the celestial realms, the Council deliberated their next move, their fear of Jin Shang growing with each passing moment.

The storm had gathered. Now, it was time to unleash it.
