The spark of darkness

Chapter 1: The Life She Knew

Lena had always been the quiet one, the one who sat in the back of the classroom, her eyes tracing the cracks in the wall rather than engaging in conversations with her classmates. Her family life was a web of broken promises. Her father had left years ago, and her mother—once a vibrant woman—now seemed a mere shell of herself. The depression had taken her, left her cold and distant, barely able to get out of bed most mornings.

It was in this silence that Lena found herself most often. No one truly understood her, not her mother, not her classmates, and certainly not her friends—who were more like distant acquaintances, hanging around for the sake of being seen.

The weight of loneliness suffocated her, and though she would never admit it to anyone, she craved something more—something deeper than the hollow life she lived. But no one could give that to her. Not even the dull glow of her tiny town could offer what she longed for.

The first time she saw Rosewood Manor, she was fifteen. It loomed on the outskirts of town, an ancient mansion hidden by a forest, its windows darkened and its ivy-covered walls whispered secrets she couldn't quite hear. That was the first time Lena felt a stirring, a pull. Something about the Manor beckoned her, calling her into its depths.

Chapter 2: An Unlikely Find

After months of watching from afar, Lena couldn't resist any longer. She sneaked out one rainy afternoon, the sound of her boots crunching on the damp forest path beneath her. The Manor was old, so old that it seemed untouched by time, as if the world outside had forgotten it existed.

Lena's heart raced as she walked closer, her breath fogging in the cold air. There was an odd feeling that washed over her as she touched the heavy, rusted gate that separated the Manor from the rest of the world. She hesitated for a moment, then, with a determined push, forced it open.

The door creaked as she entered the foyer, dust motes floating in the stagnant air. The scent of mildew and forgotten memories filled her nose. She explored the house, each room more strange and mysterious than the last.

Then, she found it—a book, thick with age, hidden beneath a pile of broken furniture in the library. Its cover was a deep shade of black, adorned with faded symbols. Curiosity burned within her as she reached for it, brushing the dust away to reveal the ancient title.

"Shadows of the Forgotten."

Chapter 3: An Unholy Pact

The book was unlike anything Lena had ever read. It was filled with strange symbols and words she didn't understand. But as she turned the pages, something inexplicable tugged at her, urging her to continue.

Late that night, with only the flicker of a candle for light, Lena whispered the first words of the incantation she found in the book. It felt like nothing at first, just an echo of words, but as she recited the final line, the shadows in the room began to stir. They twisted, writhing around her feet, stretching up the walls like living things.

Fear and excitement mixed in Lena's chest. It wasn't supposed to happen like this. She had read the warnings in the book, but they seemed too vague, too distant, as if they were meant for someone else. And yet, here she was.

The shadows flickered, and a voice—deep and malevolent—whispered in her ear.

"You've made your choice."

Chapter 4: A Taste of Power

In the days that followed, Lena found herself drawn back to the Manor, to the book, to the shadows that had answered her call. At first, she didn't believe it was possible. After all, she was just a girl. But the more she experimented, the more she realized the truth: she could control them.

It started small—moving an object across a room, making a shadow disappear in an instant—but it wasn't enough. Lena wanted more. She wanted power, the kind that could change her world. The shadows, always silent, seemed to grow stronger with every spell she cast.

As her abilities grew, so did her arrogance. She began testing her powers on people—people she barely knew but knew enough about to manipulate. A classmate who was rude to her would suddenly be hit with an unexpected stroke of bad luck. A teacher who treated her poorly would fall ill, a strange, unexplainable sickness taking hold.

No one suspected a thing. The darkness was her secret, her power. And she reveled in it.

Chapter 5: The First Price

The more Lena used the shadows, the more she realized there was a price to pay. It wasn't immediate, and it wasn't always obvious, but it was there.

At first, it was subtle. A moment of dizziness here, an unexplained pain there. But it wasn't until her mother's health worsened that Lena truly understood.

She hadn't meant for it to happen. She didn't want to hurt her mother. But she had been desperate. Her mother had been bedridden for weeks, and Lena couldn't bear to watch her suffer any longer. So, Lena performed another ritual—one she hadn't fully understood, but she had read it in the book. She knew it was risky, but the need for control, for power, was too strong.

When the spell was completed, her mother's health improved. The illness that had plagued her vanished, and Lena felt a moment of triumph. But the victory was short-lived. The price had been paid.

The shadows whispered again.

"One life for another."

Lena didn't understand. But as she looked at her mother, alive and healthy, a hollow feeling began to take root in her chest.

Chapter 6: The Growing Darkness

As Lena's power grew, so did her obsession. She began to rely more and more on the shadows, using them to manipulate situations, control people, and even alter events. No one noticed. No one suspected a thing. She was in control, and the feeling was intoxicating.

But the darkness was changing her. She could feel it, tugging at her very soul. The shadows no longer just whispered—they commanded. And each time she obeyed, a piece of her humanity slipped away.

Her relationships with the few people who still cared about her deteriorated. Her mother, once a source of warmth and love, became distant, too afraid to ask questions. Her classmates, too, began to notice that Lena had changed—becoming colder, more distant, and more unpredictable.

And all the while, the shadows promised her more. They whispered of worlds beyond her own, of power she couldn't even comprehend.

But at what cost?
