Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Marcus Checks His Status and Begins Building a Library

It was early morning at the prison. The air was cool, and the quiet was a rare luxury in the post-apocalyptic world they had come to know so well. Marcus stood in front of a small makeshift desk in one of the empty rooms of the prison, his fingers hovering over the interface of his system panel. It had been a while since he'd last checked his progress and today felt like the right time to see how far he had come.

Checking the Status

His system had been growing steadily, but now it was time to assess where he stood. With a focused thought, the system flickered to life in front of him.

Status:

Strength: 34

Agility/Dexterity: 30

Endurance: 45

Intelligence: 60

Wisdom: 47

Luck: 10 (Locked)

Skills:

Basic Survival:

Mastered Medical Knowledge: Intermediate (from books)

Weapons Handling: Advanced (bows, knives, melee)

Hand-to-Hand Combat: Advanced

Engineering: Novice

Agriculture: Beginner

Literature and Language: Novice

Marcus looked over his progress. His intelligence had grown due to the countless books he had been devouring over the past weeks, and his physical strength was improving steadily thanks to consistent training. He had invested much of his time in learning new skills, especially in fields that would be essential to their long-term survival—agriculture, medicine, and engineering.

However, it was the Literature and Language skills that caught his attention. He knew that the more he could cultivate this skill, the more he could teach the others and create something that would preserve their collective knowledge for future generations.

A New Project: The Library

Marcus had been thinking a lot about the future. In a world where information was scarce and knowledge was often lost, the idea of a library—a safe place to store books, knowledge, and history—was a beacon of hope. He imagined a facility within the prison where they could keep records of everything they had learned, from basic survival to advanced medicine, farming techniques, and even storytelling.

It wouldn't be easy, but Marcus was determined.

He knew where to start. There was an old classroom building near the rear of the prison that had mostly remained untouched. It had been used for educational purposes before the outbreak, and the structure seemed sound enough to serve his purpose. It was time to repurpose it.

Getting the Group Involved

Marcus made his way to the courtyard, where Rick, Jeffrey, Daryl, and the others were working on reinforcing the outer walls. He needed help, and he wasn't about to do this alone.

"Rick," Marcus called out, as he approached him. "Got a minute?"

Rick wiped his brow and gave him a nod, sensing the seriousness in Marcus' tone. "Of course. What's up?"

"I've been thinking," Marcus began. "We need more than just food, weapons, and shelter. We need knowledge. A place to store everything we've learned, a library of sorts. A place where we can teach the next generation how to survive and rebuild. I want to turn one of the old classrooms into that library."

Rick looked at him, considering his words. "A library, huh? I get what you're saying. It'd be a place to pass on everything we've learned, a place for the kids to learn from. But it'll take time and effort, Marcus. Are you sure we're ready for that?"

Marcus nodded firmly. "We have the resources, Rick. We can repurpose old books and even teach each other new skills. This place can be more than just a refuge; it can be a beacon for the future. We have the knowledge we need—now we just need to preserve it."

Rick rubbed his chin, thinking it over. "Alright. Let's do it. We've got the manpower, and if this is going to help us in the long run, then it's worth the effort."

Gathering Supplies and Teamwork

Marcus began organizing a small team of people to help with the project. Daryl, who had an eye for finding useful materials in the most unlikely places, was tasked with locating any old books, educational resources, or supplies they could use to stock the library. Carol, who had a deep understanding of nurturing growth, was enlisted to help make sure the library also functioned as a learning center—organizing how books and resources would be categorized and distributed.

Together, they scavenged the prison for old desks, chairs, and anything that could serve as storage. They found textbooks in various classrooms, old manuals from the prison's administration, and even some novels and stories that had been left behind by former prisoners or staff members.

As the weeks passed, Marcus and his team slowly transformed the old classroom into something new. It wasn't just a room with books; it was a sanctuary for knowledge, a symbol of survival and hope in the dark world they now inhabited.

A Vision for the Future

The library wasn't just a place to store knowledge—it was a message. It represented the idea that, no matter how dire the situation became, the human spirit could still grow, adapt, and pass on wisdom. It was a place where they could preserve their history, and where future generations could learn from the past.

One day, as Marcus walked through the newly furnished space, he stood in the center and looked around. The shelves were filled with books—some old, some new, all of them filled with lessons for survival. It was a humble beginning, but it was enough.

"We're building something here," Marcus said to himself. "Not just for us, but for the world that's still out there."
