Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Family Ties

The Grimes family barbecue was in full swing when Marcus arrived at Rick's backyard. The smell of grilled burgers mixed with the sound of laughter and country music on a cheap radio. It was a quintessential summer gathering, but Marcus's sharp mind recognized the fragile peace beneath the cheerful façade.

Rick Grimes, his uncle, stood by the grill, flipping patties with a focused expression. Lori, Rick's wife, handed paper plates to the kids running around, while Shane Walsh, Rick's best friend, was cracking jokes that drew amused groans from the adults.

To Marcus, this was more than a simple family gathering. It was a moment to observe, connect, and begin laying the groundwork for the challenges ahead.

Connecting with Rick

"Uncle Rick!" Marcus called, jogging over.

Rick looked up, his usual stern face softening into a rare smile. "Hey, bud. How's it going?"

"Good. Can I help?" Marcus pointed to the grill.

Rick raised an eyebrow but handed him the tongs. "Sure, just don't burn anything, alright?"

As Marcus worked, he listened closely to Rick's conversations. Rick's steady demeanor masked a growing tension; he spoke often about the challenges at the sheriff's department, hinting at unrest in the nearby city.

"What's been bothering you at work?" Marcus asked casually, flipping a burger.

Rick looked surprised by the question but answered, "It's just… people don't seem to trust the system anymore. A lot of desperation out there."

Marcus nodded. "Maybe it's a sign to prepare for the worst."

Rick chuckled. "That's a bit heavy for a kid your age, don't you think?"

Marcus shrugged, hiding his seriousness. If only you knew what was coming.

Bonding with Lori

Later, Marcus found Lori sitting on the porch, watching Carl play with a toy truck in the grass. She looked tired, her gaze distant.

"Hi, Aunt Lori," Marcus said, sitting beside her.

She smiled faintly. "Hey, Marcus. What's up?"

"Nothing much. You seem… worried."

Lori hesitated, then sighed. "Rick works too hard, and Shane… well, he means well, but he's always stirring things up."

Marcus had to hold back his thoughts about how Shane's feelings for Lori would spiral into chaos later. "Maybe you should talk to Rick about taking some time off."

Lori laughed softly. "You're wise for your age, Marcus. Thanks for that."

A Tense Exchange with Shane

As dusk settled, Marcus noticed Shane watching Rick and Lori with a mix of frustration and longing. Marcus approached him cautiously, knowing Shane's importance—and volatility—in the events to come.

"Hey, Shane," Marcus said, handing him a soda.

Shane smirked. "What's up, kid? Trying to butter me up for something?"

"Nope. Just wanted to say thanks for looking out for Uncle Rick and Aunt Lori."

Shane's expression softened. "They're my best friends. I'd do anything for them."

Marcus nodded, hiding his unease. That's what I'm afraid of.

Foreshadowing the Future

As the night wound down, Marcus watched the family interact with new appreciation. Every smile and every laugh felt bittersweet. He knew the fractures in these relationships would only deepen as the apocalypse unraveled their lives.

Carl ran up to him, holding a toy gun. "Bang! You're a zombie now!"

Marcus smiled, ruffling the boy's hair. "Not yet, little man. Not yet."

In his mind, Marcus vowed to protect Carl, Rick, and even Lori from the horrors to come. His foreknowledge was both a gift and a burden, but he would use it to steer the Grimes family toward survival—and strength.

"They'll need to trust me when the time comes. That starts today."
