Chapter 24 - [23] The Final Warden Awakens

The exploration team stepped into a chamber far larger than they had anticipated. The ceiling stretched skyward, adorned with ancient carvings depicting tales of war and destruction. Massive pillars supported the structure, their surfaces etched with faintly glowing symbols that pulsed rhythmically, as though attuned to an unseen force. The air was heavy, thick with the presence of magic saturating every corner of the room.

The beams from the team's helmet lights pierced the darkness, revealing the architectural details bit by bit. The room resembled a throne chamber, its floor made of polished black stone gleaming like a mirror. At the far end, a large throne stood, seemingly crafted from black metal and blue crystals emitting a faint glow.

Cero raised his hand, signaling the team to halt. "Look at that," he whispered, his voice echoing through the silent chamber.

Under the light of their helmets, they saw a massive figure seated on the throne. Humanoid in shape with six arms, its body appeared to be made of stone, riddled with glowing blue cracks identical to the patterns they had seen on the upper floor. The entity's eyes were shut, and its stony form looked as though it had been asleep—or dead—for thousands of years.

"Director," Robert approached cautiously, his weapon aimed forward. "That's it. The creature depicted on the walls earlier. The Final Guardian."

"It's still not moving," murmured one of the marines. "Should we get closer?"

Cero studied the figure for a moment before responding. "We analyze the situation first. Don't be reckless."

He advanced carefully toward the throne, flanked by technicians and marines who formed a defensive perimeter around him. Each step echoed faintly in the vast chamber, heightening the eerie atmosphere.

"SYSTEM, analyze that entity," Cero commanded in his mind.

[Analyzing… Entity identified as The Final Warden. Status: Inactive. Function: Core seal guardian. Activation requires interaction with the throne's core mechanism.]

[Warning: Activating the entity may trigger defensive responses. High risk.]

Cero narrowed his eyes and scanned the floor around the Warden. A large circular pattern was etched into the floor, glowing symbols connecting the pattern to the throne. A faint energy flowed from the symbols into the Warden's body, giving the impression that the entity awaited something to awaken it.

"Director," one of the technicians called out. "The pattern on the floor is similar to the seal on the upper level. I think this is the main trigger."

"Exactly," Cero replied. He turned to his team. "If we want that key, we'll have to face this guardian."

Robert stepped forward, his expression wary. "Director, is this wise? We have no idea how strong this creature is, and this room is clearly designed to give it the upper hand."

Cero gave a small smile, though his eyes remained cold. "There's no shortcut, Robert. We didn't come this far to turn back. Besides, we have enough firepower to deal with anything here."

A young marine spoke up, his voice trembling slightly. "Director, do we have a way to ensure it won't revive after we defeat it?"

Cero glanced at the marine, his smile lingering. "This thing is a guardian, not a phoenix. If we destroy it, that should be enough. And if it does revive... well, we'll figure that out later."

Robert sighed. "Alright, if that's your call. We'll prepare."

Cero stepped into the center of the seal on the floor, gazing at the glowing symbols that grew brighter. "SYSTEM, activate the mechanism," he ordered calmly.

[Activating core mechanism… Processing…]

[Warning: Entity The Final Warden will activate in 30 seconds.]

The light in the room began to shift, growing brighter with each passing second. A sharp cracking noise came from the throne as the Warden's stony body began to fissure, revealing brighter blue light from within. The creature's massive eyes opened slowly, glowing red and locking directly onto Cero.

The Warden rose to its full height, towering over everything in the chamber. Its six arms moved deliberately, emitting a grinding sound like stone scraping against stone.

"All units, defensive formation!" Cero commanded sharply, raising his railgun as he prepared to face the final guardian.

The massive entity let out a deep, resonant sound, a mixture of a growl and a roar that seemed to reverberate from the earth itself. The sound was so heavy and intimidating that the entire room seemed to tremble. One of its enormous stone-like arms, resembling a massive hammer, swung down to strike the ground with immense force.

BOOM!

A shockwave tore through the air, pushing Cero's team back several steps. Some fell to their knees to steady themselves as dust and fragments of stone filled the chamber.

The Warden lifted its head, its glowing red eyes surveying the team. With a voice that was both deafening and earth-shaking, it roared, "THE KEY! PROTECT THE KEY!!"

The roar didn't just echo through the air—it seemed to pierce their minds. Some marines faltered, their hands trembling as they gripped their weapons.

"Damn," Robert muttered, breathing heavily. "I've never felt anything like this before—pressure straight to the bones."

"You're not alone, Captain," a younger marine replied, his voice shaking. "This is the first time we're up against something that... feels like a monster."

Cero stood at the center of his team, his expression calm despite the chaos. His eyes scanned the Warden's every move, analyzing its body and the patterns glowing on it. A plan began to form in his mind.

The Warden advanced slowly, its six arms moving with mechanical precision, ready to destroy anything in its path. Blue energy began radiating from its body, and each of its massive steps left deep cracks in the floor. One of its lower right arms raised the massive stone hammer again, now glowing with magical symbols.

"It's going to attack again!" one of the technicians shouted.

"Defensive formation!" Robert barked. "Maintain distance and focus fire!"

Energy weapons lit up the room as they unleashed a volley of shots at the Warden, striking its massive stone body. But the attacks left little more than faint scratches, as though its form was impervious to ordinary damage.

"It's useless!" a marine yelled. "Our bullets are just bouncing off!"

The Warden roared again, louder and more intense. One of its massive hands hurled a glowing blue orb of energy, which crashed into the ground with a thunderous explosion. The shockwave scattered the team, sending some of them tumbling across the floor.

Robert, crouching behind a fragment of debris for cover, looked on in horror. Amidst the chaos, he saw Cero standing firm, advancing toward the Warden without hesitation.

"Director!" Robert shouted, his voice filled with tension. "Don't go in alone! Fall back to the line!"

But Cero ignored him, railgun in hand, eyes fixed on the towering guardian. His gaze burned with determination, even as the odds seemed insurmountable.

Cero ignored the call. He marched forward, railgun in hand, his gaze locked on the massive creature's enormous legs. His expression was resolute, even though the looming threat seemed insurmountable.

He aimed at one of the creature's legs and pulled the trigger on his railgun. The deafening sound of magnetic fire roared through the air, but the result was merely a shallow scratch on the surface of the colossal stone limb. The bullet ricocheted as if the creature were made of an impenetrable material.

"Damn rock," Cero muttered under his breath, then pulled a plasma grenade from his belt. With precise aim, he hurled it at the creature's knee. A flash of bright blue consumed the area, leaving a small crater on the surface of its leg—but the damage was still negligible.

The creature shifted its attention to Cero, its glowing red eyes burning brighter. "YOU WILL NOT TAKE THE KEY!" it bellowed, raising one of its enormous hammer-like hands, poised to crush the ground where Cero stood.

"Director!" Robert called again, his voice louder this time, but it was once again ignored. Amid the mounting pressure, Cero spoke through the comms device linked to his entire team.

"All units, listen up! I'll distract this thing. Focus your fire on its joints, especially the knees and elbows. Cripple its mobility."

"Director, that's insane!" Robert's voice came through the comms. "You can't take it on alone!"

"I'm not alone, Captain," Cero replied firmly. "I've got all of you backing me up. Just follow my orders."

Robert gritted his teeth but finally relayed the command. "All units, target the creature's joints! Do as the Director says!"

Cero kept moving, dodging the creature's attacks with precise leaps and rolls. The massive stone hammer smashed into the ground with devastating force, leaving craters with each missed strike. Using the openings, Cero darted closer to its legs, firing magnetic rounds at its knee joint.

Across the room, Cero's team began concentrating their fire on the creature's elbow joints. Railguns and plasma grenades created small cracks that gradually became visible across its massive form.

The creature, with its six sprawling arms, retaliated wildly. Blue energy spheres erupted from its hands, crashing into pillars and the floor, forcing Cero's team to keep moving.

As Cero continued to dodge and analyze, his mind worked quickly. Every attack from the creature, though powerful, followed a predictable pattern. Its movements slowed whenever it cast magic, and its range was limited by the large but enclosed space.

"Big…" Cero murmured, his eyes scanning the creature's massive form. "A big target…"

His thoughts coalesced into a focused strategy. "That's it!" he exclaimed, his voice sharp with determination. He spoke again through the comms. "Captain Robert, we're not just targeting its joints. We're taking it down entirely."

"What do you mean, Director?" Robert asked, though he already recognized the certainty in Cero's tone.

"We'll use its own weight against it. Concentrate fire on its right knee and left elbow. If we disable those points, gravity will do the rest."

The team adjusted their attacks accordingly, focusing all firepower on the designated targets. Plasma grenades and magnetic rounds rained down on the creature's right knee, deepening the fractures. Meanwhile, Cero's railgun struck the left elbow with pinpoint accuracy, causing one of its arms to dangle uselessly.

The creature let out an earsplitting roar, its pain reverberating through the chamber. It tried to stabilize itself, but the massive crack in its right knee finally gave way. The colossal form began to topple.

"Keep firing!" Cero ordered. "Don't give it a chance to recover!"

At last, the creature lost its balance entirely. Its massive body crashed to the floor with a thunderous impact, kicking up a cloud of dust that enveloped the room.

Cero didn't waste a moment. He leapt onto the fallen creature, heading straight for the glowing symbol on its chest—the energy core controlling its movements. With his railgun, he aimed and fired a high-powered shot.

The bullet struck the symbol, fracturing it with a brilliant burst of light. A final explosion of blue energy filled the chamber as the creature's body crumbled into a lifeless heap of stone.

Silence settled over the room in the aftermath of the blast. Cero's team, most of them gasping for breath and covered in dust, slowly rose from their hiding places.

Robert approached, his expression a mix of relief and exasperation. "Director, you're absolutely insane," he said. "But I can't argue with the results."

Cero smirked faintly, brushing the dust off his railgun. "Sometimes, a little madness is just what it takes to win a battle like this."

He walked toward the throne, where the glowing key they had been searching for now hovered serenely. With careful hands, Cero reached out and grasped the key, feeling its cold energy course through his fingers.

"Well done," he murmured, his voice filled with quiet satisfaction. "Mission accomplished."
