Chapter 4 - chapter 4

The anonymous email lingered in Sophia's mind as she arrived at Blackwood Enterprises the next morning. She had barely slept, her thoughts circling the cryptic warning and the volatile interaction between Damian and Elena. Whatever was going on in the Blackwood family was bigger than her job, but she couldn't ignore the creeping sense of unease.

Sophia opened her laptop and searched for the email again. The sender's address was a string of random characters, offering no clues. Still, the words felt personal, like someone was watching her.

Her thoughts were interrupted by Damian's voice on the intercom.

"Miss Grant, my office. Now."

Sophia quickly grabbed her notebook and headed inside. Damian was at his desk, scrolling through his tablet with a scowl. His usual intensity seemed amplified, his movements sharper.

"Cancel my 11 a.m. and reschedule the board review for later this week," he ordered.

Sophia nodded, jotting notes. "Done. Anything else?"

He looked up, his gray eyes narrowing. "What did Elena say to you yesterday?"

Sophia hesitated. "She warned me about… you."

Damian's expression darkened. "Of course she did. Elena thrives on sowing doubt. Whatever she told you, ignore it."

"She didn't tell me much," Sophia admitted, meeting his gaze. "But it's clear there's more going on than you're letting on. If I'm going to do my job effectively, I need to know what I'm dealing with."

Damian leaned back in his chair, studying her with a mixture of irritation and amusement. "You're bold, Miss Grant. I'll give you that."

"I'm practical," she replied evenly.

After a long pause, Damian exhaled. "Elena is obsessed with taking control of Blackwood Enterprises. She believes she's entitled to it, but her methods are ruthless. I've spent years cleaning up her messes and keeping the company afloat. She won't stop until she's destroyed everything I've built."

Sophia frowned. "But why? What's driving her?"

Damian's jaw tightened. "That's none of your concern."

Sophia bristled but bit her tongue. Damian clearly wasn't ready to share the full story, but his guardedness only fueled her curiosity.

By mid-afternoon, Sophia's day took another unexpected turn. As she was organizing files, her desk phone rang.

"Miss Grant, come to the 12th-floor archives," a voice said before the line went dead.

She froze, glancing around, but the office was quiet. The request was strange, but something about the voice compelled her to act.

Sophia took the elevator to the 12th floor, a rarely used part of the building where old records were stored. The hallway was dimly lit, the air thick with the scent of dust and paper.

"Hello?" she called out, her voice echoing.

A figure emerged from the shadows. It was a man in his late 40s, wearing a rumpled suit. He looked familiar, but she couldn't place him.

"You're Sophia Grant, right?" he asked.

"Yes," she replied cautiously. "Who are you?"

"An old friend of Damian's father," the man said, stepping closer. "My name is Richard. I worked here when the Blackwoods still had a sense of loyalty."

Sophia tensed. "What do you want with me?"

"To warn you," Richard said. "You've stepped into a war, Miss Grant. Damian and Elena aren't just fighting over the company—they're fighting over a legacy tainted by secrets. You're smart. You've seen the cracks. Stay out of it before you get caught in the crossfire."

Sophia's heart raced. "Why are you telling me this?"

"Because I know what happens to people who get too close," Richard said, his voice grave. "Damian might seem like the hero, but he's made sacrifices you can't imagine. Ask him about the Solace Project."

Before Sophia could press him further, Richard turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving her with more questions than answers.

---

That evening, back at her desk, Sophia stared at her computer screen. She hesitated for a moment before typing "Solace Project" into the company's internal database. The search yielded nothing, but the name stuck in her mind.

As she prepared to leave for the night, Damian appeared at her desk.

"Working late?" he asked, his tone lighter than usual.

"I wanted to finish reviewing the merger documents," she said, masking her unease.

Damian studied her for a moment. "Good. But don't overextend yourself. You'll need your energy for tomorrow's negotiations."

Sophia nodded, her expression calm, but her mind raced with thoughts of Richard's warning.

As Damian walked away, she couldn't help but wonder: What was the Solace Project? And how far would she go to uncover the truth?
