Kaito's grasp on the Heart of Balance tightened as its energy started to course through him. Waves of energy plunged into his core, going back and forth from searing heat to biting cold, and threatened to tear him apart. Kagekiri shook in its sheath, purring with the raw, unbridled energy that coursed through the orb.
The room flared to life in a kaleidoscope of light and darkness, forcing everyone to shield their eyes. Shiro growled low, its claws digging into the stone floor as the energy overpowered the space.
"Kaito!" Kaede cried, stepping forward, only for Hikaru to hold her back.
"Stay back!" Hikaru shouted. "This is his trial. If we interfere, it could destroy him!"
Within the Heart
Kaito's surroundings faded to a void of endless white and black. He floated in the middle of this nothingness, his body weightless, while a voice called out to him.
"Why do you seek my power, mortal?"
There was neither kindness nor cruelty in that voice; it just was. It echoed across the void, reverberating deep within Kaito's very soul.
"To protect," Kaito said, his voice even as chaos whirled around him. "To stand against those who would harm the innocent."
The void stirred, shadows swirling into a huge, amorphous figure with eyes that glowed like embers. "Protection requires strength. Do you have the will to wield me, knowing the cost?"
"I'll pay whatever price it takes," Kaito said, firm.
The figure leaned in closer, eyes narrowing. "Words are easy. Show me."
And suddenly, Kaito found himself immersed in visions. Standing in the smoldered village-his own village-of charred homes with lifeless bodies of families and dear ones he knew by name. Soldiers marched abreast across the flames; their faces were concealed by their helms.
At the centre of that destruction was the figure of an emperor in dark armor-who carried Kaede bound and unconscious.
"You failed them," the emperor said, his voice dripping with malice. "And now they will pay for your weakness."
The emperor raised his sword and prepared to bring it down on Kaede.
"No!" Kaito screamed, flinging himself forward.
Reality and Resolve
Kaito's body convulsed with light and darkness as he screamed through the real world chamber. Ayame's knuckles were white upon her staff, her face pale.
"Can he survive this?" Kaede asked, her voice trembling.
Hikaru said nothing, his gaze pinned on Kaito.
In an instant, the energy stabilized. The light emanating from the orb faded, and Kaito collapsed to his knees, his chest heaving. His eyes blazed when he finally looked up-one silver, the other black.
"Kaito," Kaede breathed, rushing to his side. "Are you all right?"
He nodded, his voice hoarse. "I'm fine. The Heart. it accepted me.
In his hand, the orb had become a small shard of crystal, throbbing softly. Kagekiri, also, had altered-its blade now shimmered with a delicate poise between light and shadow.
The Revelation
Hikaru went forward, his face serious. "That you have survived indicates your election. But this is an award with duty-the Heart's power. It is no weapon but a beacon."
"A beacon?" Ayame asked.
"To the emperor," Hikaru replied. "He'll sense it. He'll know exactly where we are."
Kaede's heart sank. "So we've lost our advantage."
"Not entirely," Hikaru said. "The Heart also grants clarity. It may reveal what lies ahead—if Kaito can harness it."
Kaito stood, his grip on the shard firm. "Then we need to act quickly. The longer we stay here, the greater the risk to everyone."
Hikaru nodded. "The path through the mountains will take us to the Sanctum's final guardian. If we can earn its blessing, we might stand a chance against the emperor's forces."
Finding the Guardian
The group readied themselves to leave the temple, packing supplies and tending to their wounds. Shiro remained glued to Kaito's side, an uncharacteristic protectiveness in the dragon's bearing.
As they journeyed deeper into the mountain pass, the terrain became hazardous. The air was thin, and the path was filled with jagged rocks and hidden pitfalls.
"Are we even certain this guardian exists?" Kaede asked dubiously.
"It does," Hikaru said. "But it won't show itself to any old person. We need to prove our worth for it."
"What kind of proof are we talking about?" Ayame asked, clutching her staff.
"Sacrifice," Hikaru said simply.
The Trial of Sacrifice
A large stone archway cut into the mountainside came into view. Ancient runes danced across its surface, glowing faintly as they approached. Beyond the archway lay a cavern filled with an eerie, golden light.
"This is it," Hikaru said. "The Guardian waits within."
As they stepped inside, the cavern shifted around them, its walls alive with pulsating energy. At the center stood a massive, ethereal creature—a dragon-like being composed of light and shadow, its eyes filled with ancient wisdom.
"Who dares disturb my slumber?" the creature boomed, its voice shaking the cavern.
Kaito stepped forward, Kagekiri in hand. "We seek your blessing to stand against the empire."
The creature studied him for a moment more, then spoke. "The blessing can be obtained by only proving resolve: What are you willing to sacrifice for what is close and dear to you?"
Kaito stammered upon that heavy question. "Anything."
His eyes narrowed further into his skull. "Would you give up your sword? Your power?"
The grip of Kaito upon Kagekiri had tightened. "Yes, if it will help to save the ones dear to me.
The creature let out a low rumble, its expression inscrutable. "Then prove it."
Without warning, the cavern's energy coalesced into a blade, striking toward Kaito with incredible speed. He raised Kagekiri to block, but the impact sent him sprawling.
The trial had begun.
