I am already prepared for Max's speech.

However, to be truthful, I wasn't keen on coming tonight. Business events have never really suited me, and going to one with Max felt like stepping into a snare I wasn't ready for. 

Meanwhile, Max had requested rather than insisted, and his surprising self-control took me by surprise.

Here I stood, in a refined ballroom surrounded by some individuals who conversed in careful tones and chuckled at jokes I couldn't grasp, gripping a glass of water as if it were my only salvation.

Max was mingling with guests at the event, greeting people, and sharing courteous smiles. He appeared refined as if he fit in here. I remained unnoticeable; I felt completely out of place as if I was nothing there. But I sat down in one corner watching everything that was going on.

I glanced at Max. He seemed distinct this evening, calm, more collected. However, that just increased my curiosity about him.
