Chapter 4 - Chapter Four: The Beginning of the End

I whispered to myself, "The creatures here

represent our fears... they feed on every moment of weakness, on every tremor of fear in our hearts." My chest tightened, but I tried to stay calm. "If I show my fear, I'll be an easy prey."

I looked around again; the shadows began to form and thicken, indistinct shapes appearing in the darkness, as if reflecting my deepest fears. Every step these creatures took toward me made me feel the echoes of the past, the pain I had always tried to bury, and the failure I had always feared.

I took a deep breath and gathered my courage. "I won't let them control me... I will face this fear."

One of the creatures appeared at the end of one of the maze's corridors, emerging from the shadows with a chilling calm. It was massive, its body distorted, and its eyes glowed with a cold gleam that would freeze your blood even in the darkest of places. Its features were unclear, as if it were merely a reflection of my deepest fears, but there was something familiar about it... something unsettling.

I stepped back, trying to suppress the tremor of fear that was beginning to take over my body. "Don't let it see your weakness," I whispered to myself in a shaky voice. But the creature didn't move. It just stood there, silently watching me, as though it knew exactly what was going on in my mind.

My breath quickened, and my heart began to pound. I felt that this creature knew me better than anyone else, knew all my weaknesses and the secrets I had tried to hide—even from myself.

Its body resembled shadows, but distorted and strange, like a nightmare that had taken form, or darkness wearing scattered features of deep fear. Its limbs stretched and writhed, unstable, as if it were thick smoke trying to materialize. Its face seemed half-melted, with no clear features, just cold eyes staring at me, their gaze piercing into my very soul.

Every movement it made manipulated the light around it, creating terrifying shapes that danced on the maze's walls. It was as if the maze itself were breathing with it, conspiring to keep me trapped in this terror. I tried to step back slowly, but my legs wouldn't obey me, as if an unseen weight was binding me in place.

I took a deep breath, trying to gather what little courage I had left. "I won't let you control me," I said to myself, even though I could feel the tremor of fear creeping into my voice.

A cold smile formed on its distorted face, as if mocking my desperate attempt to maintain my composure. That smile was enough to send a chill down my spine, like a message from the darkness itself, telling me that I was exposed, and my resistance would be in vain.

Then, faint whispers began to surround me, filling the space around me, as if they were coming from the very walls of the maze. The words were scattered, distorted, but carried a tone of reproach and betrayal, as if repeating my mistakes and secrets I had long tried to forget. "You're weak... you won't be able to escape... you will be defeated here..."

I felt the whispers creep into my mind, pressing down on me, tightening the grip of my fear. "Don't listen to them... don't let them control you," I whispered to myself, but my voice sounded faint against the darkness.

I searched with my eyes for an exit from this place, from this maze that seemed endless, trying to ignore the rising whispers around me. They grew louder, swirling around me like a storm of mysterious voices, carrying a mix of pity and gloating. It was as if they were shouting that I was trapped here forever, and that every attempt to escape was nothing but an illusion.

I tried to focus, forcing myself to look at every corner, every passage, searching for a glimmer of light or any sign of escape. But the shadows thickened, and the creature was still watching me, its cold smile never fading. It was as if the maze itself was breathing with it, changing with its every move, like a net slowly closing in around me.

I took a step to the right, then another, trying to find a path to flee, but the whispers grew closer to my ears. "There's no escape... all paths lead to darkness... you can't escape your fears."

My hands pressed against my ears, trying to block out the whispers creeping into my mind, while I whispered to myself in a strained voice, "This is just a challenge... just a test... all you have to do is hold on." I tried to convince myself with these words, reminding my mind that this darkness and these creatures were nothing but tests of my fears, they couldn't harm me unless I allowed them to.

But the whispers didn't stop; they grew more insistent, trying to break through the fragile barrier of trust I had just built, questioning my ability to overcome this challenge. "You're weak... you'll fail... darkness is your destiny."

Still, I slowly lifted my head, trying to ignore the voices. This time, I told myself more firmly, "Even if the maze is designed to plant fear within me, it won't defeat me... I won't let it make me surrender."

As I composed myself, the faint light shining in the distance seemed like a promise of escape. I felt something new stirring inside me—strength I didn't know I had. I overcame my fear and faced the creature blocking my way, and with a single step, I pierced the darkness, moving toward the light that beckoned ahead. But as I drew closer, I suddenly stopped.

There it was, at the end of the corridor, new shadows emerging, surrounding it. I felt something strange... not everything was as it seemed. Had I truly escaped the maze, or was there another trap waiting for me in the darkness behind?

I told myself, preparing for the next step: "I won't give up now... because this was only the beginning."
