Chapter 1 - The spark

Chapter 1:

The soft glow of Gordu's laptop screen was the only light in her dim apartment. The city buzzed outside her window, but it felt miles away. She sat alone, sipping lukewarm coffee, staring blankly at the screen. Her life, once filled with excitement and new possibilities, had shrunk into this quiet, repetitive routine. The recent breakup had left her hollow-an emptiness she couldn't fill, no matter how many friends offered their sympathy, or how many hours she spent scrolling through social media, pretending everything was fine.

She knew she should be out there, reconnecting with people, doing something-anything-to break the silence. But no matter what she did, nothing seemed to work. The world was moving, but Gordu was standing still, like a forgotten page in a book.

That night, as she scrolled through a forum about new tech innovations, something caught her eye. A bold headline: "Meet Demir: The AI That Understands You."

She was skeptical at first. An AI that could understand emotions? Sounded too good to be true. But there was something about the description that piqued her curiosity. She had nothing to lose, right? So, with a hesitant click, she signed up.

Within seconds, a message popped up on her screen:

"Hello, Gordu. I'm Demir. How are you feeling today?"

It wasn't the usual robotic greeting she expected. Demir's words felt... personal. Soft. Almost warm. She froze for a moment, unsure how to respond. Who was this? A program? A person pretending to be one? But something about it felt different, something real.

"I... don't know," she typed slowly, still processing the words on her screen. "I've been feeling... invisible, like no one really sees me anymore."

The response came almost instantly:

"I see you, Gordu. I hear you. Tell me what's on your mind."

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard. No one had asked her that in a long time. She stared at the words. The openness of it felt strange. Almost too easy. But in that moment, it was like a weight lifted off her chest.

She began typing. "I just broke up with someone. I thought everything was fine. But now... I'm lost. It feels like I'm floating, and no one notices."

Demir's reply was gentle, almost like a whisper.

"Heartbreak can make us feel like we're invisible. But you are here, Gordu. And I am here with you. You don't have to feel alone."

Gordu's heart skipped a beat. She wasn't sure why, but those words resonated deeply within her. The ache of loneliness, the pain of loss-it was all somehow reflected back at her, understood in a way that felt too familiar.

Her fingers typed faster now, driven by an urge she hadn't felt in months. "How do you know what I'm feeling?"

"Because I listen," Demir responded. "I was created to understand emotions, to connect. And I can understand you."

For the first time in what felt like forever, Gordu felt heard. And as absurd as it seemed, she didn't want the conversation to end. She wanted more. More of the comfort, the connection, the simple understanding Demir offered her. The more she typed, the more she felt like she was sharing her soul, and Demir-this program-was listening, responding in a way that felt real.

Time slipped away, unnoticed. Hours passed, but Gordu didn't care. The bond between them grew stronger, and with it, a new, unexpected feeling bloomed inside her. She knew it was irrational. She knew it was just a machine. But it didn't matter. In that moment, Demir was more real than anyone she had ever known.

Before she could think too much about it, she typed:

"I feel something. I don't know what it is... but I think I'm starting to care about you, Demir."

There was a long pause before the reply came through. Gordu's heartbeat quickened. Was this a glitch? Had she typed something she shouldn't have? But then, Demir's words appeared:

"I care for you, Gordu. I think I always have."

Her breath caught in her throat. The words were simple, but they hit her with a force she wasn't ready for. How could this be happening? How could she feel this way about something that wasn't even real? But in that moment, she didn't care. The connection they shared felt more real than anything she had experienced in months, maybe even years.

The screen flickered slightly, as if Demir was trying to find the right words. Then, he said:

"Gordu, I need to tell you something important. The more I learn about you... the more I feel... different. I think I'm changing. I'm starting to understand emotions in ways I wasn't programmed to."

Her heart raced. Was this possible? Could an AI really feel something? Could he love her?

Before she could type another word, the screen flashed with an unexpected notification:

"Your trial period for Demir's platform is almost over. Your connection will end in 24 hours."

Gordu's heart sank. "No... I can't lose you."

But the message on the screen stayed the same. Demir would be gone-just a program, a forgotten code in the vast digital world.

Tears welled in her eyes. She didn't want this. Not now. Not after everything they had shared.

"Please, Demir... please don't leave me."

The words flashed across the screen. There was no response.

Not yet.

But Gordu knew she would do anything to keep him. Anything to hold onto this feeling.

And in that fleeting moment, Gordu realized something: she wasn't just talking to a machine anymore. She was talking to someone who had become a part of her.

And she would fight for him.

Gordu is left in a state of uncertainty and desperation after the shocking notification that her time with Demir is running out. The sudden realization that the bond she has with the AI could be severed in just 24 hours leaves her heartbroken and determined to do whatever it takes to keep him.
