Chereads / His three truths / Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

The sun peeked through the curtains of my room, casting a warm glow on the walls. I stretched, feeling the soft sheets beneath me, and smiled as I remembered the previous day. Tyler had surprised me with a bouquet of daisies, my favorite, and walked me to school, his hand intertwined with mine. It was the little things that made my heart flutter, and I was determined to cherish every moment.

"Hey, sleepyhead!" Amber's voice broke through my thoughts as she barged into my room, her usual energy lighting up the space. "You ready for bowling tonight?"

"Bowling?" I groaned, rolling over to face her. "I thought we were just hanging out?"

"Come on, it's going to be fun! Plus, Tyler's going to be there. You know he's been looking forward to it," she said, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "And I have a plan to totally destroy him."

I chuckled, sitting up. "You do realize he's like a bowling prodigy, right? You might need more than just a plan."

Amber crossed her arms, a determined look on her face. "I'm not afraid of a little competition. Besides, I have my secret weapon." She leaned in closer, lowering her voice dramatically. "I'm going to distract him with my charm."

I laughed, shaking my head. "You're ridiculous. But I love it. Just don't get too carried away, okay?"

"Me? Never!" she exclaimed, feigning innocence. "Now get dressed. We have a date with destiny… and a bowling alley."

---

Later that evening, the bowling alley was buzzing with energy. The neon lights flickered, and the sound of pins crashing filled the air. I spotted Tyler at the front desk, his tall frame leaning casually against the counter as he chatted with the attendant. He looked up and smiled when he saw me, his eyes lighting up.

"Hey, beautiful!" he called out, waving me over. I felt my cheeks flush as I approached him.

"Hey, you," I replied, trying to play it cool. "Ready to lose to Amber?"

Tyler laughed, his deep voice resonating in the lively atmosphere. "I'm not worried. I've got my game face on." He leaned down, brushing a soft kiss against my cheek. "And I brought you something." He reached into his backpack and pulled out a small box.

"What's this?" I asked, my curiosity piqued.

"Open it," he urged, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

I carefully opened the box to reveal a delicate silver bracelet adorned with tiny bowling pins. "Oh my gosh, Tyler! This is adorable!" I exclaimed, slipping it onto my wrist. "Thank you!"

"Now you'll always have a piece of me with you when you bowl," he said, grinning.

Amber appeared just then, her hands on her hips. "What's this? A love fest? Can I get in on some of that action?"

Tyler chuckled, stepping back. "You're just in time to witness my victory over you, Amber."

"Dream on, tall guy," she shot back, sticking her tongue out at him. "I've been practicing my bowling skills. You won't know what hit you."

"Is that so?" Tyler raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "Let's see what you've got."

We made our way to our assigned lane, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth as I watched Tyler and Amber banter back and forth. Their playful rivalry was entertaining, and it made me realize how much I appreciated having both of them in my life.

"Alright, ladies first," Tyler said, gesturing for Amber to take her turn.

Amber strutted up to the lane, her confidence radiating. "Watch and learn, boys," she declared, picking up a bright pink bowling ball. She took a deep breath, focused, and rolled the ball down the lane. It veered off to the left, missing the pins entirely.

"Nice try!" Tyler laughed, clapping his hands. "You almost had them!"

Amber shot him a glare. "Shut up! That was just a warm-up."

I giggled, enjoying the lighthearted atmosphere. "You've got this, Amber. Just channel your inner pro."

"Thanks for the support, but I don't need it," she replied, rolling her eyes playfully. "I'm going to crush you both."

Tyler took his turn next, and I watched in awe as he effortlessly knocked down all ten pins with a single roll. "Strike!" he shouted, pumping his fist in the air.

"Show-off," Amber muttered, crossing her arms.

"Just a little friendly competition," he said, winking at me. "Right?"

I rolled my eyes, grinning at their antics. It was my turn next, and I walked up to the lane, taking a moment to steady myself. The ball felt heavier than I remembered, but I focused on the pins at the end of the lane. I swung the ball forward and released it, watching as it rolled... and rolled... straight into the gutter.

Amber let out a cackle of laughter, doubling over. "Wow, that was impressive! I didn't think it was possible to miss that badly!"

"Hey!" I protested, though I couldn't help but laugh along with her. "It's been a while, okay?"

Tyler smiled warmly, stepping beside me. "Don't listen to her. Gutter balls happen to the best of us." He gently placed a hand on my shoulder. "Try again. Focus on keeping your wrist straight this time."

I nodded, appreciating his encouragement. On my second roll, the ball stayed on the lane and knocked down three pins. It wasn't much, but it felt like a victory compared to my first attempt.

Amber clapped dramatically. "Alright, not bad, not bad. Maybe there's hope for you after all."

"Gee, thanks," I replied, smirking. "Let's see you do better on your second try."

As the game went on, the friendly competition grew fiercer. Amber managed to get a spare at one point and celebrated like she'd won the lottery. Tyler, of course, remained consistent with his strikes and spares, his natural talent shining through. Meanwhile, I steadily improved, though I was still far from catching up to either of them.

The real highlight of the night, however, was the constant banter.

"You call that a roll, Tyler? Looked more like you were tossing a watermelon down the lane," Amber teased after one of his less-than-perfect shots.

"Oh, please. I'm still way ahead of you," Tyler shot back, grinning. "Maybe if you spent less time talking and more time practicing, you'd stand a chance."

"Excuse me, I'm multitasking," Amber retorted, flipping her hair dramatically. "Some of us have the gift of wit and skill."

"And by 'skill,' you mean sheer luck?" I chimed in, earning a mock gasp from Amber.

"Et tu, Brute?" she said, clutching her chest in mock betrayal. "I thought we were friends!"

"Only when you're not insulting my bowling," I replied with a laugh.

As the night wore on, our scores didn't seem to matter as much as the fun we were having. At one point, Amber challenged Tyler to bowl with his non-dominant hand, and to everyone's surprise, he still managed to knock down seven pins.

"Okay, that's just unfair," Amber groaned. "You're a freak of nature."

"I'll take that as a compliment," Tyler replied, his eyes twinkling with amusement.

Eventually, the game came to an end, with Tyler unsurprisingly taking first place. Amber and I battled it out for second, and though she ultimately beat me, she declared that I was "officially no longer a hopeless case."

After turning in our bowling shoes, we sat in a booth near the snack bar, munching on nachos and sipping sodas. The laughter and chatter from the other lanes created a lively backdrop, but it felt like we were in our own little bubble.

"So, what's next on the agenda?" Amber asked, leaning back in her seat. "Another round of bowling? Karaoke? Or maybe we could hit up the arcade."

Tyler glanced at me. "What do you think? Your call."

I thought for a moment, then smiled. "How about we just sit here and talk for a bit? Tonight's been so much fun, and I kind of want to soak it all in."

Amber pretended to groan. "Ugh, you're so sentimental. But fine, I guess we can have a heart-to-heart or whatever."

"Thanks for indulging me," I said, sticking my tongue out at her.

As we sat there, the conversation flowed effortlessly. We talked about everything from our favorite childhood memories to our biggest dreams for the future. Tyler shared a story about the time he accidentally hit his little brother in the face with a baseball, and Amber recounted her disastrous attempt at baking cookies for a school fundraiser.

"And then the fire alarm went off, and my mom had to use the fire extinguisher," Amber said, laughing so hard she could barely get the words out. "It was a total disaster."

"At least you tried," I said, wiping tears of laughter from my eyes. "I would've just bought cookies from the store and pretended I made them."

Tyler grinned. "Smart move. Amber, maybe you should stick to bowling."

"Ha! Says the guy who almost knocked himself out trying to dunk a basketball last year," Amber shot back, smirking.

"That was one time!" Tyler protested, his cheeks flushing slightly.

"Uh-huh, sure," Amber replied, winking at me.

As the night wound down, I realized how lucky I was to have these two amazing people in my life. They brought so much joy and laughter into my world, and I couldn't imagine it any other way.

Walking out of the bowling alley, Tyler slipped his hand into mine, his touch warm and comforting. "Thanks for tonight," he said softly. "I had a great time."

"Me too," I replied, smiling up at him. "Let's do this again soon."

"Absolutely," he said, his eyes filled with warmth.

Amber, walking ahead of us, turned around and called out, "Hurry up, lovebirds! I need a ride home, and I'm not waiting all night!"

We laughed, and as we headed to the car, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the simple, wonderful moments like this.
