The dim light in Verath's chamber flickered, casting shadows that seemed to writhe along the walls. Kade sat across from the High Sage, doing his best to look composed as the silence stretched on. Verath's silver eyes studied him intently, his bony fingers steepled beneath his hood.
'You play your part well, Lord Kaedus,'
Verath said finally, his voice smooth but sharp.
'But I must admit, I expected someone… different.'
"Different?"
Kade thought, forcing a smirk.
"Does he mean taller? Scarier? Less confused?"
'I'm full of surprises,'
Kade said aloud, leaning back in his chair.
'You'd be amazed what I'm capable of.'
Verath's lips curved into a faint smile, but before he could respond, a low chime echoed through the chamber. The sound emanated from a small obsidian orb resting on the table. Verath's expression darkened as he waved a hand over the device, activating it.
