Chapter 1 - The Apocalypse

It was the 15th of August, 2022. My name is Sebastian, Seb for short, I was just an ordinary student in the US. It was just a normal morning, everybody was doing their own thing, and that's when we heard a bomb siren. Nobody saw it coming, nobody knew who did it, heck nobody knew why they would. But, an unidentified, no it's just that the world's leaders didn't want anyone to know… But they say an unidentified country had shot numerous projectiles into different countries all over the world, and when it hit, everybody thought that it was going to be a nuclear war.

But no, an unknown gas came out, and as you inhaled it… you turned into a zombie, yes, a zombie, exactly like the ones in the Walking dead and World War Z. Everyone that inhaled the gas made them hysterical at first, but then slowly they lose their minds for the worse, then they lose their hair, their skin started to decay, then finally they turn into the undead.

And now, it's been nearly a week, I've been staying in my apartment all this time, but now with food running out, and electricity just cutting off. I was lost, as a kid, I would've been excited, but now reality has hit me hard.

I barely have any combat experience, growing up, I've occasionally hunted game with my dad and often entered airsoft tournaments, but that's pretty all. I'm lucky that I often go to the gym as well! Due to my mom's pickering, saying things that I was getting lazy…. Wait, mom, dad, shit I never called them!

Scrambling around the room I picked up my phone and tried to call my mom, no response, my dad, no response as well.

"FUCK!" I screamed out throwing my phone at the couch. "Fuck, fuck, fuck…. What's happened to them?"

3rd Person POV

Losing all hope, Seb broke down in tears realizing the gravity of the situation. This went on for minutes until he finally regained his mind. Thinking over what to do, he started packing things on his biggest bag, clothes, food, hygiene kits, bandages and alcohol, and finally weapons. A knife strapped to his belt and a crowbar he bought for a school project.

Breathing in and out, he calmed himself down before looking one last time at his apartment, and finally he went out.

Cautiously walking down the stairs, he silently peered his ears next to a few rooms, listening for sounds that may indicate his neighbors still being alive one way or another, fortunately, or unfortunately, there were no sound other than the usual screams of the undead Seb has been hearing for the last few days.

Peeking outside the window he observed a few zombies walking about, but nothing too life threatening if he doesn't let his guard down. Slowly he tried opening the doors of a room, locked. He tried another door, once more it was locked. He tried on all rooms in the apartment until finally, one door wasn't locked.

Entering inside he was met with groans and the terrible smell of rotting flesh, immediately covering his nose, he slowly crouched and started walking. There he saw a neighbor of his, now a zombie, stuck with a long metal bar impaled into him and into a wall. Feeling pity for the poor fellow he grabbed his crowbar and with all his strength he hit the undead's head.

With the amount of force the zombie's body jerked down, but it was somehow still alive. Now with the crowbar doing its job, he gently placed it down and grabbed his knife. This time he stabbed the zombie's head, piercing cleanly as it limped.

Now with the zombie gone, he did the sign of the cross and said a short prayer. Even in times like these he didn't forget the values and faith his parents showed him. Looking around the room he looked for anything useful, there he found some canned food and some chips.

Grabbing the plastic packed goodies he tore it open and started eating it as if there was no tomorrow, when he finished he washed his hands and put the plastic pack aside. Now looking inside the rooms he found a lighter with a pack of cigarettes, hesitating he grabbed only the lighter but left the cigarettes.

But as he was about to leave, he found a safe, looking at the safe. It was one of those old types. The one where you have to spin to be able to make it open, so he tried cracking it for a few minutes but eventually gave up. With all hope lost he was planning to leave but that's when he remembered, he had a crowbar.

Running to the living room he grabbed his crowbar and went back, he then attempted to pry the safe open, but despite everything he tried, his struggle seemed to do little.

But he could clearly see that it was giving way, barely, but it was working. And so for about half an hour, all Seb did was try to get the safe door open. He even had to take his shirt and jacket off due to the heat.

Yet his efforts were not in vain, after one final pull he had managed to break the door open. And lo and behold, inside was a handgun along with a box of bullets. Examining the gun, Seb could tell it was a Walther P22, a .22 lr handgun which was quite common around the country.

Removing the magazine it was a common 11 round mag, he then pulled back the slide and checked for any rust, fortunately this gun was in mint condition. He then inserted back the magazine which released the slide as it sounded with a clang. Grabbing the ammo box he quickly grabbed about 22 rounds and put the rest into his bag.

Sebastian POV

"Hm.. If the previous owner had a gun, then he must have a holster for it."

Scouring the room for a holster, I even had to empty a whole drawer full of clothes until eventually I found one, hidden right in the wardrobe.

Putting on the holster to my belt, and finally attaching the gun into the holster. I felt protected now, I felt deadly.

3rd Person POV

Now with a gun, Seb was extremely excited and lost control of his emotions which then resulted in him breaking a lamp. This caused the zombies outside to be attracted to the noise, but he didn't know this, yet.

Now in any normal zombie apocalypse game there will be numerous types of zombies, but here, there are only a few, but extremely deadly.

As he was trying to step over the broken lamp parts, Seb heard footsteps. Numerous footsteps, like horses galloping across the wild west.

Leaving the apartment room quickly, he took one look outside and there he saw. A small horde, the normal walkers were trailing behind, but what was ahead of them is what feared him.

Runners

Seb didn't know what made them run, well he didn't even have time to think as they were closing in on the apartment, fast.

Quickly running down the stairs of the apartment, he left from the back side of the building. Climbing through a window and ducking down a small gap. From then on he could see a few undead, but none that could get to him quickly.

Scanning the area he had targeted 2 buildings, a large house surrounded by a large fence, though there were a few walkers wandering around. Or he could go to a convenience store , it looked looted but was empty aside from a few dead bodies.

As he pondered, he could hear the runners closing in, so he had to choose, the house or the convenience store. With no time to lose, he quickly ran to the house, with walkers near the gate he had no choice but climb over the fence. Tossing his backpack over, it landed with a loud thud.

Quickly climbing the fence he glanced over across the street, there he could see the runners in sight. They quickly found him, this really startled Seb as he lost his balance which caused his left abdomen to be scraped by one of the fence's spikes as he too crashed with a large thud.

With adrenaline in his system, the pain was minimal, helping him as he entered the house through a window. Locking all the windows and doors leading outside, he sat down unto the floor with sweat and dirt all over his body, his heart still pumping from the intense encounter.
