Chapter 149 - Luna Took Diary?

As David and Hermione walked down the corridor, Hermione couldn't help but ask, "Is that diary really that important?"

David nodded solemnly. "It's the key to everything. The diary is what's been controlling Ginny and opening the Chamber of Secrets."

Hermione's eyes widened in realization. "So Ginny wasn't acting on her own? She was being manipulated?"

David gave her a meaningful look but didn't respond directly. "Let's just say it's complicated."

Hermione nodded, understanding the need for secrecy. "Don't worry, I can keep a secret."

Just then, the sound of footsteps echoed down the corridor. Filch appeared, his usual scowl deeper than ever. His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, and his movements sluggish. When he spotted David and Hermione, he stopped and glared at them.

"What are you two doing here?" Filch growled, his voice hoarse. "Scamander, Granger, are you up to no good again? Did you open the Chamber? I'll catch you if you did!"

David stepped forward, shielding Hermione slightly. "Calm down, Filch. We didn't open the Chamber. Mrs. Norris is my friend too. I wouldn't hurt her."

Filch's eyes narrowed, but some of the anger seemed to drain from him. "Friends? No, she has no friends. Only me. She only trusts me." His voice cracked, and he turned away, muttering to himself as he shuffled back to his chair. "I'll catch them... I'll catch them all..."

David sighed, watching Filch's retreating figure. "He's not doing well. Mrs. Norris meant everything to him."

Hermione nodded, her expression softening. "Do you think she'll be okay?"

David nodded. "Once Professor Sprout's Mandrakes are ready, Mrs. Norris will be fine. Filch just needs to hold on a little longer."

Over the next few days, David's life became increasingly hectic. Between classes, training with Professor Flitwick, and helping Harry practice Parseltongue, he barely had time to breathe. Harry's progress was slow, and David couldn't help but feel frustrated. Taming the basilisk would be impossible if Harry couldn't speak Parseltongue fluently.

Meanwhile, Lockhart's Defense Against the Dark Arts class had taken a surprising turn. Gone were the days of pointless acting and self-aggrandizing stories. Instead, Lockhart had started teaching practical spells, much to the students' delight. The highlight of the week was when he introduced the Disarming Charm, "Expelliarmus". For the first time, the class felt like they were actually learning something useful.

"Finally, Lockhart's doing something right," Ron muttered during one of the lessons.

Harry nodded in agreement. "I just hope it lasts."

Hermione, however, was thrilled. "I knew Professor Lockhart had it in him! He's just been misunderstood."

David raised an eyebrow but didn't argue. He had his doubts about Lockhart's sudden change, but for now, he was just glad the class was productive.

One afternoon, as David was leaving the girls' bathroom after another fruitless search for the diary, he heard light footsteps approaching. He turned to see a peculiar girl skipping down the corridor. She had long, wavy blonde hair and wore a wreath of colorful flowers on her head. Around her neck hung a necklace made of cork stoppers, which jingled with every step.

Hermione whispered, "That's Luna Lovegood. She's a first-year in Ravenclaw."

Luna stopped beside David, her dreamy eyes scanning him as if she could see something no one else could. "There are so many Wrackspurts around you," she said, her voice airy.

David blinked. "Wrackspurts?"

"They're invisible creatures that float into your ears and make your brain go fuzzy," Luna explained, swatting at the air near David's head as if shooing away flies.

David couldn't help but smile. "Well, that explains a lot."

Luna tilted her head, her gaze distant. "You're looking for something, aren't you?"

David's eyes widened. "How did you know?"

Luna nodded. "I found it. A black notebook. It felt... wrong. So I buried it."

"Buried it?" David repeated, stunned.

"Yes," Luna said matter-of-factly. "It's in the Forbidden Forest. I can show you."

Without waiting for a response, Luna turned and skipped down the corridor. David and Hermione exchanged a glance before following her.

Luna led them to the edge of the Forbidden Forest, stopping near a patch of disturbed earth. "It was here," she said, pointing to a small hole in the ground. "But it's gone now."

David knelt down, examining the area. The hole was empty, and there were no signs of footprints or disturbance. It was as if the diary had vanished on its own.

"Who could have taken it?" Hermione asked, her voice tinged with worry.

David shook his head. "I don't know. But whoever has it, they're dangerous."

Luna, seemingly unbothered by the gravity of the situation, smiled faintly. "I hope you find it soon. The Wrackspurts won't leave you alone until you do."

David thanked her, and Luna skipped away, her cork necklace jingling softly.

Back in the castle, David's mind raced. The diary was missing, and the person who had taken it could be anyone. The basilisk remained dormant for now, but David knew it was only a matter of time before the Chamber was opened again.

As he walked to the Great Hall with Hermione, Ron, and Harry, he couldn't shake the feeling of impending danger. "We need to be ready," he said quietly. "The diary's out there, and whoever has it won't hesitate to use it."

Harry nodded, his expression grim. "I'll keep practicing Parseltongue. We'll need it if we're going to stop the basilisk."

Hermione placed a reassuring hand on David's arm. "We'll figure it out. Together."

David smiled faintly, grateful for his friends. But deep down, he couldn't shake the feeling that the worst was yet to come.
