Chapter 35 - Looming Games

(Third Person POV)

Almost Two weeks have passed and the time was nearly near. In two more days, the event known as the Drakken Games was going to commence, taking place in the Red Keep, outside the castle where most Trials by Combat typically happen.

Inside the Small Council room, King Jaehaerys sat down with two of his Kingsguard; Lord-Commander Gyles Morrigan and Ryam Redwyne. This was one of the few times that the Kingsguard were allowed to sit next to the King, seemingly on equal positions. But, the two were aware of the situation and took it with humility.

"You two are well aware that I cannot place my entire Kingsguard in these games." Jaehaerys said seriously

Ser Ryam nodded, "Yes, Your Grace." He said, "We know this."

Ser Gyles looked at him, "Whatever this person wants, we won't let him get away with it, Your Grace." He said

"We have decided to send Seven warriors, representing the Faith of The Seven." Jaehaerys said, "This self-proclaimed 'god' can torment our people all he wants, but our Faith will not be shaken."

"Of course." Ser Gyles said, "So out of all of the Kingsguard, you have chosen us two?"

"Yes." Jaehaerys said, "Weeks ago, I told my sons that they were the ones I have the most confidence in....but I was just trying to raise their spirits. No matter how badly I would like to keep them away from this, they are dragons like me. It is difficult for them to be ordered around."

"The Princes and us, that makes four." Ser Ryam said, "Who are the other three?"

"Three warriors from the Vale, The Reach, and The Westerlands respectfully have stepped up on such a short notice." The King said, "I was fortunate that they were in the Crownlands."

"Very well." Ser Gyles said, "So it is nearly upon us."

"Yes." Jaehaerys said, "I want the two of you to know that you are without a doubt two of the greatest fighters the Realm currently has. I have the utmost faith in you. You will do your duty to protect my family by partaking in this farce."

Ser Ryam nodded and stood up, bowing slightly, "We will not fail you, Your Grace." He said, "It brings us great honor to do this."

"That man will regret doing this." Ser Gyles said, "He does not know that if he places himself on our level, he will have to go up against us."

"That is what I am hoping for." Jaehaerys said seriously

**********

Drakken walked through the door of the room, which had just been prepared for dinner. Across the room, King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne sat on the table, looking at him.

"Sit." Jaehaerys said, "Thank you for coming."

Drakken tilted his head, "Is this some sort of trap?" He said, "It won't work. And the Games will happen, whether you like it or not."

"Please, Sit." Alysanne said, "We wish to discuss the rules."

"Rules?" Drakken said, "Oh, yes. There has to be rules, otherwise, they won't be games."

He walked over to the table and pulled out a chair, looking at the food on the table that reminded him of the first time they had met.

"From what I understand, you issued a duel, placing yourself as your only champion while challenging us to gather many." Jaehaerys started

Drakken sat down, "That is right." He said, "I will be my only fighter, why?"

"We have decided on Seven." Alysanne said

"Seven?" Drakken said, "How come so very little?"

"To represent our Faith in The Seven." Alysanne said seriously, "It will not be shaken by you."

"Oh." Drakken said, "Well, I guess it would be symbolic, crushing your seven warriors and in the meantime, crushing your Faith."

"Even if you win, our Faith will not waver." Jaehaerys said, "You are not some god we'll run towards should something inconvenient happen to us. The Seven have blessed us with this moment, allowing us a chance to rid the Realm of you."

"Ha!" Drakken said, "It wasn't your Seven gods, Jaehaerys, it was I who gave you this chance. Don't go thanking your absent gods for this."

"Nevertheless, we wish to discuss the rules." Alysanne said, "How do you expect to handle this."

"Well, there is the arena, obviously." Drakken said, "We'll fight within the arena. It is quite simple, I face the first person until I either kill or wound him to the point he cannot continue. Then, the next warrior steps up and fights me. And we repeat the process. If I go through all seven, I win. But....if any of those seven warriors manage to pierce my heart...."

Drakken drew an X over his chest, where his heart is.

"You lose...." Jaehaerys said

"That's right." Drakken said, "But I'll add specifics here; I won't use my powers. I will limit myself and basically place myself on the same level as you humans. I will only use a sword and my skills. I won't use my regeneration either. Obviously, if I am wounded on a fatal spot, I won't die but I will still be wounded. So if your warriors can cut me, that gives them an advantage. Not much like it will help them much. Only my heart needs to be pierced to win. My head, neck, or anything else can be stabbed as many times as needed but it won't win you the games."

"I see..." Alysanne said as she looked at him

"If the warrior I fight decides to yield due to knowing he is outclassed or because he was wounded badly, then I will honor the yield and spare him." Drakken continued, "However, if I happen to overwhelm him, killing him before he could even consider yielding, well that's too bad."

"That seems fair enough." Jaehaerys said

"Let us talk rewards." Drakken said, "I decided to make it a bit more fair to you. Every wound I suffer will add one year that I leave you alone and give this Realm some peace. Say, should I be cut ten times and your warrior pierces my heart, then you win and I disappear for ten years. That is something you can take advantage of...."

"And you will keep that word?" Alysanne asked

"Yes." Drakken said, "But say that I am wounded ten times and I win, then the amount of time is halved. meaning that while I did win, I leave you alone for five years and then I return for my reward.....Your Daughter."

Jaehaerys grimaced, "So you've decided on it...."

"Oh yes." Drakken said, "When I accepted, I was immediately intrigued. If I win, I want the two of you to know that your daughter will be taken care of. But I also want you to know that when I win, she's mine. You hear that? It doesn't matter if I don't return for a few more years...should I win the Drakken Games, your Daughter is mine. Her blood is mine. Her entire existence is mine. Her entire being, her mind, her beliefs, everything about her....."

"Is mine."
