Chapter 158 - 3-The First Battle

**Chapter 3: The First Battle**

The first rays of dawn were beginning to pierce the heavy fog that hung over the city. The distant sound of the sea crashing against the rocks below mingled with the quiet rustle of the morning breeze. But in the heart of the city, there was no peace—only the tense anticipation of what was to come.

Riven stood at the city's wall, staring out over the horizon. His eyes were tired, but there was a fire in them, a burning determination that had driven him and his team this far. The weight of the battle ahead pressed down on him like an anvil, but there was no turning back. Malakar's forces were closing in, and the beasts were coming.

"Riven," Nyx's voice cut through his thoughts, steady and calm as always. She stood beside him, her hand resting lightly on the hilt of her sword. Her expression was focused, but there was a hint of unease in her eyes. "It's time."

Riven nodded, his jaw set in determination. "Let's get to it."

The city was buzzing with activity. Soldiers and citizens alike had fortified the walls, preparing for the onslaught. The beasts were coming—creatures of every shape and size, driven by Malakar's dark power. This was no ordinary raid; this was the beginning of a war. The rebellion of the beasts had escalated from scattered skirmishes to a full-scale assault. And this city, one of the last strongholds of human resistance, was now a target.

As Riven and his team made their way down the narrow streets, the sounds of clashing weapons and the cries of the wounded reached their ears. The city was under siege, and the chaos had already begun. They could see the destruction—buildings burning, civilians running for their lives, and in the distance, the thunderous roars of the beasts as they rampaged through the city.

Zephyr was already in the heart of the fray, his tall figure cutting through the battlefield with lethal precision. His sword was a blur, and his every move seemed to strike with unerring accuracy. Despite the danger around them, his face was set in a cold, focused expression—his mind sharp, his instincts honed by years of battle.

Lia, ever the calm and strategic one, was organizing the defenses, her voice cutting through the noise of the battle as she directed soldiers to their positions. "Hold the line! Protect the civilians! Don't let the beasts breach the walls!"

Riven's heart was pounding in his chest as he unsheathed his sword, the weight of his blade a familiar comfort in his hand. But the battle before him was anything but familiar. The beasts, once creatures of the wild, were no longer acting on instinct alone. They were coordinated, methodical—almost like soldiers in their own right. They weren't just attacking the city; they were systematically breaking through every defense, pushing forward with relentless force.

"We need to hold them back!" Riven shouted to his team. "Don't let them reach the center of the city!"

The battle raged on. Creatures of every shape and size charged through the streets, tearing through buildings and trampling anyone who stood in their way. Riven fought with everything he had, his mind focused on the task at hand. The power of the beasts was overwhelming, and their numbers seemed endless. He could feel the weight of responsibility pressing down on him. This was the first of many battles, and if they failed today, it could mean the end of everything.

As the fight continued, Riven noticed something in the distance—a massive figure towering over the other beasts. A hulking creature, its body covered in dark, matted fur, its eyes glowing with the sickly light of Malakar's magic. It was leading the charge, a terrifying beast of war that seemed to be tearing through the city without hesitation. And behind it, the other creatures followed in lockstep.

"We need to take down that beast," Riven said, his voice sharp with urgency. "If we don't, we'll never stop the rest of them."

Nyx nodded, her eyes narrowed. "I'll go after it. Stay back, Riven. I don't want you getting hurt."

Riven opened his mouth to protest, but Nyx was already running toward the beast, her movements swift and fluid. She disappeared into the chaos of the battlefield, her figure blending with the shadows as she closed the distance between herself and the monstrous creature.

Riven turned his attention back to the battle at hand, his sword swinging with deadly precision as he cut through the ranks of the smaller beasts that continued to surge forward. Every movement was instinctive, every strike calculated, but no matter how hard he fought, the enemy seemed to multiply, never giving him a moment's respite.

Then, the sound of a roar split the air—a deafening, bone-shaking sound that sent a wave of panic through the ranks of their forces. Riven's heart skipped a beat as he turned toward the source of the sound. It was the massive beast. Nyx was in the thick of it, her sword flashing as she fought to take the creature down. But something was wrong. She wasn't getting through.

Before Riven could react, a blur of motion caught his eye. Zephyr, his face strained with effort, was rushing toward the beast, his sword raised high. But in his haste, he had miscalculated. The beast's massive paw swung out, sending Zephyr crashing to the ground with a sickening thud.

"No!" Riven shouted, rushing toward his fallen friend.

He reached Zephyr's side in seconds, his heart hammering in his chest. The warrior was lying motionless, blood pouring from a deep gash on his side. His breathing was shallow, but he was still alive. Barely.

"Zephyr!" Riven cried out, his voice breaking with fear. He pressed his hand against the wound, trying to stem the bleeding, but it was no use. The damage was too severe.

Nyx appeared beside him, her face pale with shock. "We need to get him out of here," she said, her voice tight. "Now."

Riven shook his head, his eyes burning with frustration. "No. We can't leave him. We have to…"

But Nyx grabbed his arm, her grip firm. "Riven, listen to me! We can't save him if we stay here. We have to get him to safety. We'll come back for him."

With a final, desperate glance at Zephyr, Riven allowed Nyx to pull him away. But every step he took felt like a betrayal. Zephyr had been there from the beginning. He had always been the one to lead the charge, the one who pushed everyone to be better. And now, Riven couldn't protect him.

The battle raged on, but the moment Zephyr fell, something inside Riven shifted. He could feel the weight of his responsibility—his failure—weighing down on him. This wasn't just a battle for survival; it was a test of everything he had learned. A test of his leadership, of his ability to protect those who mattered most.

As they retreated into the relative safety of the inner city, Riven's mind raced. How had it come to this? How had he failed to protect his team, his friends?

But there was no time to dwell on it. They had to keep fighting. They had to survive. And if they were going to do that, Riven would have to find the strength to lead them.

And soon, they would return to finish what they had started.

---

Night fell over the city, and with it, the faint glow of victory seemed to dim. They had won the battle. The beasts were repelled, their forces scattered, but the cost had been too high. Zephyr's fate was uncertain, and the loss weighed heavily on Riven's heart.

He stood on the walls of the city again, staring out at the horizon, his thoughts a tangled mess. He had done everything he could to protect his team, but in the end, it hadn't been enough.

And the question that haunted him now was simple—was he truly strong enough to protect them all?

The winds howled through the streets, carrying with them the promise of more battles to come.
