Chapter 98 - 3-The Hunt for the Beast

**Chapter 3: The Hunt for the Beast**

The dense forest was alive with the sounds of nature—whispers of leaves rustling, distant calls of birds, and the occasional snap of twigs underfoot. The atmosphere was tense, a charged silence hanging over the group as they made their way deeper into the woods. The trees were thick with age, towering above them like silent sentinels. The path ahead was unclear, overgrown with brambles and tangled vines that seemed to swallow the ground whole. It was as if the forest itself were trying to keep them away.

Riven's eyes scanned the forest with an intensity that mirrored the pulse of the group. His heart raced, not with fear, but with anticipation. This was more than a simple hunt. This was their chance to find Veldra—this legendary beast whose connection to him was so profound, it felt as though it was pulling at his very soul. It was a chance for him to confront his past and understand the strange bond that seemed to tie him to such a creature. But with every step, the uncertainty grew. What if he wasn't ready? What if he wasn't capable of controlling Veldra's power?

He stole a glance at his companions, his eyes lingering on Kael. The young warrior had proved invaluable so far, his presence and expertise in combat making him an essential ally. Kael moved like water—fluid, precise, and deadly in every step. There was something about the way he carried himself, an aura of calm that contrasted the rest of the group's anxious energy. It was as if Kael had seen the darkness in the world and had learned how to move through it without hesitation.

But Riven couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to Kael than met the eye. Something deeper that he hadn't shared yet. Perhaps it wasn't time for that yet, though. They had a greater purpose now—tracking down Veldra.

"Are you sure this is the right direction?" Lia's voice broke through his thoughts, her voice steady but tinged with unease.

Riven turned his gaze toward her. The wind whipped through her dark hair, sending strands flying. She had been quiet for most of the journey, as she often was when she was lost in thought. Lia had always been the most attuned to the world around her, her connection to nature almost mystical. Riven trusted her instincts more than his own sometimes.

"The signs are here," he said softly, his hand tracing a few symbols etched into the bark of a nearby tree. These symbols were part of the ancient language they had uncovered in the cave. The markings were subtle, but they told a story of a creature's passage, leading them deeper into the forest.

Lia nodded, though her expression remained doubtful. "I just hope we're not walking into a trap."

Zephyr, who had been walking silently at the back of the group, scoffed. "We've come this far. We can't turn back now."

He was right, of course. They couldn't turn back, not when they were so close to the answers they needed. And yet, a strange unease lingered in Riven's chest. The feeling of being watched—the sensation that they were not alone—gnawed at him like an invisible presence, lurking in the shadows.

"Keep your wits about you," Riven called out to the group. "We're close. Whatever happens, stay together."

Kael's eyes flicked to Riven briefly, a silent understanding passing between them. "We'll handle it," Kael said in his calm, measured tone. His words were simple, but they carried weight.

The group pressed forward, the forest seeming to grow denser with each step. Shadows lengthened, and the air grew thicker, more oppressive. The path seemed to narrow as they moved deeper into the heart of the forest. It wasn't long before they came across the first signs of trouble.

A rustle in the trees above them caught Riven's attention. Before anyone could react, the creature descended upon them with terrifying speed. It was an enormous beast—a hulking mass of claws, fangs, and rippling muscle, its eyes glowing a fierce, unnatural red. Its black fur was matted with dirt and leaves, and its growls shook the very ground beneath their feet.

Lia immediately raised her hands, her magic surging to life as vines erupted from the ground to ensnare the creature. But the beast was too quick, its enormous paws slicing through the air, breaking the vines with ease.

"Move!" Kael shouted, his sword already in his hand. Without hesitation, he darted forward, his blade flashing in the sunlight as he engaged the creature head-on.

Riven followed suit, drawing his own weapon—a jagged, blackened blade that seemed to hum with a strange energy. He had no idea where it came from or why it felt so familiar, but in moments like these, it felt right. With a swift motion, he lunged toward the beast, his blade aiming for its exposed side. The creature roared in pain as Riven's sword scraped against its thick hide, but it didn't fall. Instead, it twisted around with vicious intent, swiping its claws toward Riven.

Zephyr dashed in from the side, launching a flurry of arrows that struck the beast's face, distracting it long enough for Kael to land a powerful strike to its chest. The beast staggered back, but it wasn't enough. It was still standing, still ready to fight.

"Don't let it regroup!" Kael called out. "Stay on the offensive!"

Riven's heart pounded as he took a deep breath, his senses sharpening. The thrill of battle was something he was familiar with, but this fight felt different. This wasn't just about survival—it was about something deeper. Veldra was out there, and this creature was just the first of many. He could feel the connection pulling him, urging him forward.

"Lia, Zephyr—keep it occupied!" Riven shouted. "Kael, with me!"

Kael nodded, his eyes narrowing as he advanced toward the creature again. Together, they moved as one, a seamless dance of sword strikes and evasions. The beast was powerful, but it was wild—its movements erratic and untamed. With each strike, they wore it down, pushing it to the edge of exhaustion.

And then, with a final, coordinated effort, Kael and Riven struck at the same time, their swords piercing the creature's heart. It collapsed to the ground, twitching violently before finally lying still.

Breathing heavily, Riven wiped the sweat from his brow. His chest rose and fell with the adrenaline still coursing through his veins.

"That was too close," Zephyr said, his voice tinged with relief. He walked up to the fallen creature, eyeing it warily. "What was that thing?"

"A guardian," Kael said, sheathing his sword. "A creature meant to protect something. We've made it through the first trial."

Lia stepped forward, her eyes scanning the creature's lifeless form. "But we're not done yet. Veldra is still out there. We have to keep moving."

Riven nodded. "We will. But we've learned something important today. The bond between me and whatever is waiting for us... it's real. And we're getting closer to understanding it."

As they continued deeper into the forest, the air thickened again with a sense of foreboding. The further they ventured, the closer they came to the unknown. Veldra was out there, and Riven could feel it calling to him.

But with each step, a question lingered in his mind: was he ready for what awaited them? Was he ready to face the beast that had been tethered to his fate?

For now, there was only one thing he could do—keep moving forward. And hope that when the time came, he would be strong enough to control what lay ahead.
