Chapter 88 - 18-The Fall of the Walls

### **Chapter 18: The Fall of the Walls**

The sky was shrouded in darkness, the air thick with the smoke of a burning city. The once proud walls that had stood as the last line of defense against the oncoming tide of enemies now seemed like a distant memory. Their stone faces, cracked and bloodied, lay in ruins. The defenders who had once fought with valor were now scattered, their resolve crumbling as quickly as the walls themselves.

Riven stood atop the shattered remains of a tower, his eyes scanning the horizon. The once-unified army that had valiantly resisted the enemy's advance had now fractured under the weight of the assault. The gates had fallen. The walls had crumbled. And the enemy, sensing victory, surged forward like a flood, unstoppable and merciless.

But Riven's heart burned with a fierce resolve. Kieran's sacrifice would not be in vain. The image of his fallen friend, his brother-in-arms, haunted him, but it also fueled the fire that had started to grow within him. He couldn't let the enemy win. Not after everything they had fought for, not after the life Kieran had given to ensure they had a chance at victory.

"Riven," a voice called from behind him. It was Lia. Her face was streaked with dirt and blood, but there was a fire in her eyes. The same fire that had always been there, even in the darkest of times. She had always been there for him, always fighting by his side. "We're losing the outer defenses. We need to fall back."

Riven turned to face her, his heart heavy with the weight of their situation. The enemy was too strong, too many. They were relentless, pushing forward with a force that seemed unyielding. The gates were gone, and the walls were nothing but rubble. If they didn't act fast, the entire city would be lost.

But Riven could see it in her eyes—she knew, just as he did, that retreat was not an option. Not now, not after all they had sacrificed.

"No," Riven replied, his voice low and determined. "We won't fall back. Not while we still have a chance."

Lia's eyes widened in disbelief. "Riven, we don't have time to hold the position. We'll be overrun."

Riven clenched his fists, his anger rising like a wave. "I don't care. I won't let Kieran's death be for nothing. We fight. We hold our ground."

The silence that followed was deafening. Lia stood still, her expression unreadable, as if she were weighing the consequences of his words. But Riven could see the understanding in her eyes. She knew what this meant. She knew that there was no going back.

"Alright," she said quietly, her resolve hardening. "We fight then."

The air around them seemed to shift as the distant sounds of battle grew louder, the clash of steel, the screams of the wounded, all blending into one chaotic symphony. Riven's heart pounded in his chest, his mind racing with strategies and possibilities. The enemy was closing in, and their numbers were overwhelming, but they had to hold. They had to make their stand.

He turned to face the shattered defenses, his gaze sweeping over the city's remnants. The few remaining soldiers who had not yet fallen were struggling to keep their ground. They were brave, but they were outmatched. If Riven couldn't rally them, if he couldn't give them a reason to fight, all would be lost.

"Astra," Riven whispered, reaching out with his senses to the great beast that stood behind him. The gravitational force around her pulsed with energy, an almost palpable presence that filled the air with tension. He felt her, the deep connection between them, and knew she was ready. She had always been there when he needed her, and this would be no different.

The battle had already begun in earnest, the enemy advancing with ruthless precision. The walls, once a symbol of strength, were now nothing more than rubble. The heavy footfalls of the enemy's assault forces could be heard, their monstrous war beasts trampling through what was left of the defenses. Riven could feel the hopelessness rising within him like a tide, but it wasn't his own despair. It was the despair of his soldiers. The weight of his responsibility pressed down on him.

Lia stepped closer, her expression hard as steel. "We can still win this, Riven. We just need to hold them off until reinforcements arrive."

Riven shook his head. He had no illusions left. The reinforcements weren't coming. Not in time to make a difference. The only thing they had left was their will to fight, their resolve.

"We won't wait for reinforcements," Riven said firmly. "We'll make our stand right here. This is where we end it."

He turned his gaze to the horizon, where the enemy's forces were gathering. A sea of soldiers, beasts, and war machines, all prepared to wipe them out in one fell swoop. But Riven would not let them. He would not let his friends, his soldiers, fall without a fight.

He raised his sword high, the blade gleaming in the dim light. "Hold the line!" he shouted, his voice ringing through the air. "We fight for Kieran! We fight for this city! We fight for everyone who can't fight for themselves!"

The soldiers, battered and broken as they were, lifted their weapons in unison. There was no hesitation in their movements, no doubt in their hearts. They were tired, but they were not defeated. Not yet.

Riven's heart swelled with pride as he looked out over the remaining defenders. The battle was far from over, and their situation was dire, but in that moment, he could feel the spark of hope returning. They would not let the enemy take what they had fought for.

With a sharp command, Riven led the charge. Astra followed him, her massive form pushing forward, the gravitational waves around her pulling the enemy in, rendering their movement sluggish, almost impossible. The beasts, powerful as they were, struggled against the pull, giving the defenders a fleeting advantage.

But even Astra's power could only hold them back for so long. The enemy forces were relentless. Riven fought with everything he had, his sword cutting through enemy soldiers as Astra decimated their ranks, her gravitational abilities crushing anything in her path.

Yet, for every enemy they cut down, it seemed as though two more appeared to take their place. The tide of battle was turning, and the defenders were slowly being overwhelmed.

Riven's mind raced as he fought, searching for a way out, searching for any advantage they could exploit. But as he fought, a realization struck him like a bolt of lightning. The walls were gone. The gates were down. There was no defense left. The only way they could survive now was through sheer force of will.

And that was exactly what Riven would give them.

He turned to Lia, who was fighting at his side, her movements fluid and deadly. "We're not backing down," he said, his voice filled with conviction. "Not today. We'll make sure that Kieran's sacrifice was not in vain."

Lia nodded, her eyes steely with determination. "We fight to the end."

With those words, Riven felt a surge of strength rush through him. He wasn't alone. Not now, not ever. His allies were here, and together, they would face whatever the enemy threw at them.

The wall had fallen, but the fight was far from over.
