### **Chapter 13: The Limit of Sacrifice**
The morning sun barely pierced through the smoke that hung thick in the air. The once-pristine skies were now clouded, their brightness muffled by the ash and debris that had accumulated from days of conflict. The siege continued, unyielding and relentless. Riven's forces had managed to hold their ground, but the cost was becoming apparent. The walls of their stronghold were battered, their defenses weakening. And even as hope flickered in the hearts of his soldiers, Riven couldn't shake the feeling that something far worse was coming.
In the distance, a rumble echoed. It was unlike any sound they had heard before—low, guttural, and unnerving. It didn't take long for Riven to understand that this was no ordinary attack. The ground itself trembled as massive shadows began to take form. The enemy had brought forth creatures unlike anything they had ever seen—monstrous, towering beasts, their grotesque bodies covered in scales and thick, black fur. Their eyes glowed with an unnatural red light, and their snarls sent chills down the spines of Riven's soldiers.
Riven stood at the edge of the fortress walls, his eyes scanning the horizon. His heart raced as he saw the creatures emerging from the fog. They were huge—larger than anything he had encountered in all his years of battle. The enemy had unleashed their ultimate weapon: the Chimera Beasts.
"Get the archers in position!" Riven shouted, his voice cutting through the panic that was beginning to rise among his troops. "Prepare the catapults. We have to slow them down!"
But even as his orders were carried out, Riven knew it was already too late. These beasts were beyond their current capabilities. They were not just creatures of strength—they were vessels of pure destruction. Each step they took left craters in the earth. The roar of their charge reverberated through the ground like an earthquake.
As the creatures drew closer, the chaos that followed them was palpable. Riven's soldiers did their best to hold their ground, launching arrows and bolts at the approaching beasts, but it was like trying to pierce a mountain with a needle. The Chimera Beasts were impervious to their attacks, their thick hides shrugging off any assault. The enemy's forces, emboldened by the appearance of their monstrous allies, surged forward, and the battle grew even more desperate.
Riven's mind raced. The situation was dire. Their only hope was Astra—his bonded beast, the one who had stood by him through every challenge. Astra's power, while formidable, was still not enough to face this kind of overwhelming force. Riven's connection to her, their symbiosis, had always been a source of strength, but it had never been tested to this extent.
He glanced over his shoulder, searching for Astra. She stood behind him, her form partially hidden by the smoke, her eyes meeting his. There was no need for words. They both knew what had to be done.
"Riven," Astra's voice was soft, but it carried the weight of certainty. "You know what this means. If we do this, it could destroy us."
Riven turned to face her, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "I don't care. If we don't stop them now, we'll lose everything. I can't let that happen."
Astra hesitated for only a moment, her wings unfurling slightly. Her massive form glistened in the dim light, her fur shimmering with a faint, ethereal glow. Riven could see the hesitation in her eyes, but she knew, as he did, that this was their only chance.
With a deep breath, Riven stepped closer to Astra, placing his hand on her forehead. The bond between them surged to life, the connection between human and beast pulsing with raw energy. Astra's power flowed into him, and he could feel her will, her strength, filling his body, melding with his own. They were no longer two separate beings—they were one.
The fusion of their powers, however, was not without its consequences. Riven's muscles burned as Astra's strength poured into him, his body straining against the overwhelming force. His vision blurred, and his breath came in ragged gasps. He could feel the familiar weight of Astra's presence inside him, but this time, it was different. The intensity of their connection was more than he had ever experienced. It was as if his very soul was being stretched to its limits.
With a single motion, Riven raised his sword, and the energy that surged through him flared. A wave of golden light erupted from his body, and Astra's power, infused with his own will, blasted forward, striking the Chimera Beasts with the force of a thousand storms. The beasts howled in pain as the energy tore into them, but it was not enough. They kept coming, their massive forms advancing, undeterred.
Riven's body shook as the strain of maintaining the symbiosis intensified. He gritted his teeth, forcing his body to keep up with the torrent of power flowing through him. His mind screamed for release, for respite, but he couldn't stop. Not now.
"Astra," he whispered, his voice barely audible, "we have to finish this. Together."
Astra's voice came to him like a gentle echo. "Riven, this will destroy us if we're not careful. You're pushing too hard."
But there was no time to heed her warnings. Riven's grip tightened on his sword as he summoned every last ounce of energy. The golden light around him flared brighter, brighter still, until it seemed as though the entire battlefield was bathed in blinding radiance.
With a roar, Riven released the full brunt of Astra's power. The wave of energy was like a tidal force, crashing into the Chimera Beasts and sending them reeling. Some of the creatures stumbled back, their monstrous bodies writhing in agony. The ground beneath them cracked and splintered as the force of the attack shook the earth to its core.
For a moment, there was silence.
Then, the beasts regrouped. They were not defeated, but they were slowed, staggered. And in that brief moment of respite, Riven felt the connection between him and Astra begin to fray. His vision was narrowing, his body buckling under the pressure of the symbiosis. He could feel the toll it was taking on him—his bones felt like they were splintering, his muscles screaming for release.
"Astra…" Riven gasped, his voice cracking. "I can't hold on much longer…"
But Astra's response was softer than ever, almost tender. "You've done enough, Riven. It's okay."
And with that, the bond snapped.
Riven collapsed to his knees, gasping for breath. His body felt like it had been torn apart, his muscles trembling with exhaustion. The world around him seemed to spin, the edges of his vision darkening. But even through the haze of pain, he could hear the Chimera Beasts roaring in the distance, still advancing.
"Astra…" he whispered, barely able to speak. His hand trembled as he reached out, but there was no sign of her. Their connection had been severed, and he felt as if a part of him had been ripped away.
The battle was not over.
