Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 12: THE VOID’S TRIAL

Chen's steps slowed as he approached the edge of the Abyssal Bridge, a narrow and crumbling span stretching across a chasm that seemed to swallow all light. The swirling void energy below wasn't just a sight—it was a force. It tugged at his spirit, whispering insidious doubts that clawed at the corners of his mind.

Ahead, faint blue light flickered on the far side, the glow barely visible through the oppressive darkness. Chen tightened his grip on his spear and stared at the challenge before him.

"Host, the Abyssal Bridge is a critical test," the System warned, its voice uncharacteristically grave. "It is not just a trial of physical balance but of mental fortitude. Many warriors have faced this crossing, but few have survived."

Chen smirked, though the tension in his shoulders betrayed his unease. "Then it's a good thing I'm not like most warriors."

The System paused briefly before responding. "Confidence is useful, but caution is vital. The void will test you in ways you've yet to imagine. Proceed carefully."

With a deep breath, Chen stepped onto the bridge.

---

The moment his foot touched the first stone, the air shifted. The stillness was replaced by an overwhelming pressure, as though the void itself was leaning on him. Whispers rose from the chasm, faint at first but quickly growing louder.

"Turn back…"

"You don't belong here…"

"The void will claim you…"

Chen pressed forward, his jaw tight. The whispers were unsettling, but he'd faced them before. He told himself they were just echoes of the void, mindless noise meant to distract him.

Then the whispers changed.

"Do you really think you're strong enough?"

"You're nothing without the System."

"You'll fail, like you always have."

Chen froze mid-step, his heart skipping a beat. These weren't just empty taunts—they were the fears he had buried deep inside, dragged to the surface by the void's power.

"Shut up," he muttered, forcing himself to move forward. "You're not real."

The void didn't relent. It twisted his own voice against him, echoing words he'd once told himself in moments of doubt.

"You're a fraud."

"No one believes in you, not even you."

Chen's breath quickened, his focus wavering. The bridge trembled beneath him, and a loose stone crumbled away, disappearing into the abyss.

"Host, focus," the System urged, its tone sharper. "The void preys on your mind. Draw strength from the relic."

Chen nodded, gripping the crystalline orb he had obtained from the Whispering Ruins. Its soft blue glow pushed back some of the darkness, steadying his resolve. He pressed on, step by step, even as the whispers grew louder and more vicious.

---

Halfway across the bridge, the void revealed its true power. The shadows coalesced in front of him, forming a towering figure made entirely of darkness. The figure's shape was indistinct, constantly shifting, but its presence was undeniable.

Its eyes burned with void energy, and its voice boomed like thunder. "Turn back, mortal. The abyss does not forgive the arrogant."

Chen raised his spear, his eyes narrowing. "If the abyss wants me gone, it'll have to do more than talk."

The figure roared, and tendrils of void energy lashed out from its body, whipping toward Chen with terrifying speed. He leaped back, barely avoiding the attack, and countered with a burst of fire.

The flames struck the figure, but instead of harming it, they were absorbed into its shifting form. The void entity grew larger, its presence more oppressive.

"Direct attacks will not work, Host," the System cautioned. "The void feeds on chaos. You must fight with harmony and balance."

Chen adjusted his stance, calming his breathing. He couldn't rely on brute force here—he needed strategy. Summoning a gust of wind, he used it to propel himself to the side, dodging another wave of tendrils. At the same time, he channeled earth energy into the bridge, reinforcing the crumbling stones beneath his feet.

The entity lunged, its massive form blotting out what little light remained. Chen sidestepped and struck with his spear, aiming not to destroy but to disrupt. The blade sliced through the shadow, causing the entity to falter briefly.

"The relic's energy is key," the System reminded him. "Focus on channeling it through your actions."

Chen held the orb tightly, letting its calming energy flow through him. He combined his elemental powers, creating a swirling vortex of wind and water that wrapped around his spear. With a powerful thrust, he drove the enhanced weapon into the entity's core.

The void figure let out a deafening roar, its form destabilizing. For a moment, Chen thought he had won—but the entity reformed, its tendrils now twice as fast and twice as numerous.

---

The battle stretched on, each second feeling like an eternity. Chen's body ached, his elemental reserves running dangerously low. But he refused to give up. Each time the void entity struck, he countered with calculated precision, using the relic's energy to shield himself from the worst of its attacks.

Finally, with one last surge of power, Chen combined all four elements—fire, water, earth, and wind—into a single concentrated blast. The attack struck the void figure with enough force to shatter its form completely.

The echoes of its roar faded into the chasm, and the whispers ceased. The bridge stopped trembling, and the oppressive weight in the air lifted.

Chen fell to his knees, gasping for breath. The relic's glow brightened, its energy wrapping around him like a comforting embrace.

"You have done well, Host," the System said, its voice filled with a rare note of approval. "You have passed the trial of the Abyssal Bridge. Your strength and resolve have grown."

Chen looked back at the path he had crossed, the void now silent and still. He rose to his feet, gripping his spear tightly. "I'm not done yet. Let's keep going."

The far side of the bridge awaited, and beyond it, the unknown depths of the Shadowlands. Chen stepped forward, ready to face whatever came next.
